Helping Dog Adoption and Cat Adoption

Photography by Allen Pearson
My human was photographing for Operation Paws for Homes a few weeks ago and saw their sign.  He photographed it so I could share a very good point about dog adoption, and, cat adoption too!

As you can read, there are many ways you can help with dog or cat adoption. There are many organizations that can use your help too.  Do as you can, help a dog or cat in need- it will bless your heart!

Virginia's Slow Down Move Over Law

I love going for rides with my human and he loves taking me all the places he can where I can go in the stores or shops without having to stay in the car, whether it’s hot or cold outside!

My human used to drive a school bus, years ago in the mid 1900’s when I was not yet a twinkle in anyone’s eyes, so he’s a good driver and I've always felt safe with him.   This was before the school buses had automatic transmission, air conditioning, AM/FM radios and GPS- he used to drive with temperatures of 100+ with 100% humidity, and manual transmissions- sounds like one of those stories where Dad walks 3 miles to school in snow up to his knees doesn’t it?
Being the careful guy he is, I’ve gotten curious when he does more lane changing when he’s driving down the highway and comes up a police car or fire truck or ambulance.  I’ve noticed sometimes there are people there or I can see their cars.
Credit: Flickr Creative Commons - Fairfax County

Curiosity gets the best of me so I pawed him and asked what in the world he was doing driving like a crazy man, swerving back and forth. He looks at me oddly, as if to say “since when do I drive and know what it’s about.” He smiles and concentrates on his driving and swerved again.

"Noah, in Virginia, there is a law called 'The Move Over Law'.  Whenever a motorist approaches a stopped emergency vehicle that is displaying flashing, blinking or alternating blue, red, or amber light or lights are to yield the right of way to them- basically 'move over' to give them roomFor me, I have always merged over as safely as possible whenever I saw a car stopped on the side of the road as you never know when someone might get out of the car!"

Now, I understand why Dad does what he does and know that he's not as crazy as I thought.

June is designated at the month to remind drivers about this law, so I am including a link to the Virginia State Police for you to read more details.

Friday's Friend: Cat Adoption, Fancy Cats, Fairfax

"Popeye the Loverman"
Credit: Fancy Cats Rescue
WOOF!!!! Barkingly pawsome! I am so pawed to welcome 2 more rescue groups to my “Friday’s Friend” posts!! And, even more pawsome, it was my Aunt Gini who introduced us. Am hoping my human will be photographing for them soon. One my new groups is Fancy Cats Rescue! Why am I excited about cats? My mom loves cats. My Dad loves dogs. And, I used to have a cat brother! So, I support cat rescues too!

My first cat friend to introduce to you is Popeye the Loverman! He’s called the Loverman because he loves to share his kitty kisses with humans and other cats in his foster human’s home. And he loves to curl up with the human, get his belly scratched and purr. Now if the human leaves before Popeye thinks the session should be over, he goes over to the other human in the room. (He sounds a lot like me! Woof!!) He’s just one happy guy. Not only is he a lover, he’s a bit quirky and playful too. For some reason, Popeye is absolutely fascinated by a toilet being flushed. He loves to watch the water going down. He could watch it over and over again. If a toilet is flushed and he misses it, he might get up and stand on the seat/rim and meow to ask you to flush it again so he can see it! It’s quite funny you would think he was part doggie. (That’s a great thing in my opinion! WOOF!!!!!) Another quirk is Popeye loves to send his “Foster Mom” off to work in style. Every morning Popeye waits outside his fosters bedroom door as she gets ready to go to work. Once she opens the door, Popeye hops up and starts curling around his foster moms legs ensuring she gets "Popeye's" good vibe smell! He happily follows her all the way to the door and doesn't stop lovingly staring until his foster mom says “good bye cutie! I will see you after work.” What a great way to start the day! And, if your day becomes grueling, you can think of Popeye’s warm send off!

Popeye would do best in a home with a playful kitty loving cat too. He couldn't be more PURRRfect.

If you would like to meet Popeye and learn about cat adoption, he is with Fancy Cats Rescue Team in Fairfax VA, please email them at info@fancycats.org!

Friday's Friend: Dog Adoption, Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc.

WOOF!!! BARK!!! WOOF!!!! The Lab Lady is here!!!!! WOOF!!!!!!!  I think she was probably brought here by this huge buddy of hers that you've got to meet- a big name for a big dog!  DIESEL!!  WOOF!

"Diesel"
Credit: Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc.
While Diesel may have drug "The Lab Lady" here so he can meet us and he is big, but is a gentle, and handsome fellow who really enjoys having toys to play with.  When he wakes up in the morning with a wagging tail, he brings you a toy to show his happiness.  Wherever he goes, the toy goes!  WOOF!!!!  He will surrender it before going outside, but will pick it up again as soon as he returns!

A 7 year old yellow neutered male, he weighs 75 pounds- the perfect weight.  He seems to have had some training as he knows commands "sit", "lie down", "stay" and "come" and will drop the ball on command. He is very gentle mouth when taking treats.

Diesel will sleep through the night and is not in the "chewing stage!"  A very sensitive dog, he will notice when things are out of place. Diesel bonds relatively fast and tightly, so if you have to be away for a few weeks unexpectedly, the anxiety may make him itch and get hot spots. Fortunately, if the itching/scratching is caught quickly they heal quickly. You'll just need to be nice and consistent for the first few months!
"Diesel"
Credit: Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc.

As all of us dogs are, Diesel is quite the food lover and eats VERY fast! So playing any games, running, jumping, etc. must be after at least 30 minute or more rest between eating/drinking and playing as a precaution!  And he has some lumps and bumps as dogs do, but they don't aren't an issue. He can climb 3 flights of steps but that would be his limit, 1-2 floors preferred. His bit of arthritis in his hops, makes him tired after a trot (1 mile), a game of fetch, swimming, etc. but staying at a healthy weight has helped with this.
He is good with other dogs, though more of a human's dog, there is no information on his experience with cats or with little humans- over age 10 would be best.

Diesel is up-to-date on vaccines and is ready to meet his forever friend and go to his "Forever Home."  If you would be interested in meeting Diesel and learning about dog adoption, please contact Lab-Rescue.

Friday's Friend: Dog Adoption, Operation Paws for Homes

WOOF!!!  Barkingly pawsome part of writing and introducing you to my pawtastic dog and cat friends, is meeting the many volunteers who work in the rescues to keep things going-  this week, I heard from my friend "Miss Joanne" at Operation Paws for Homes.  She introduced me to Solana- and I would like you to meet her-

"Solana"
Credit: Michael Garth Photography

A sweet, well mannered, loving, pretty, a heart-throb, er sorry, you'd never guess this girl was in a shelter... as she is so bright and cheery girl!  Her name, Solana,  - which means sunshine in Spanish!!

At about 5 years old and 25 lbs., Solana is always excited to meet new humans and will greet you at the door ready to play and even tries to take a toy on her long walks- gotta be prepared you know- WOOF!!!!! She is quick, agile, and fun-loving, and, likes to play with her leash on the way!

Solana gets so excited to meet you that it's hard for her to contain herself so she likes to jump up to greet everyone!  Humans with little humans will need to monitor this!  Her foster human is diligently working on this with her.

Solana gets along well with other dogs, but sometimes needs a few days to relax! She barks some, so an apartment or condo setting may not be the best fit.

Solana is working hard on being good in her crate and going to do her business! WOOF!!! PAWS TO YOU GIRL!!

Solana is being fostered in Fairfax, VA. She is spayed, micro chipped and up to date on her vaccines.

If you would like more information about Solana and dog adoption, please visit Operation Paws for Homes.  Tell them Noah sent you!  WOOF!!

Friday's Friend: Dog Adoption, PetConnect Rescue

I got to say a friendly "BARK!" to my friend Miss Cathy from PetConnect Rescue.  She works with dogs and sometimes the cats.  This week, she has introduced me to a very young pup named Jenkins.

"Jenkins"
Credit: PetConnect Rescue
A 3-month old Hound/Shepherd mix, Jenkins is a really cool and sweet pup!  He has the most expressive eyes and the floppiest ears- which makes him quite the unique character!! WOOF!!!

Jenkins enjoys playing with humans, canines and is curious about the kitty in his foster home.  Though he likes to chase the kitty, he does it in a playful way!

A favorite pastime for Jenkins in racing around the backyard, chewing on his favorite Kong and once tired, crashing on the biggest and softest dog bed!

The ideal humans for Jenkins is one that will toss the ball for him, take him on long walks and give him lots of love. He's a super affectionate and loves to get and give love! And, one who will help him continue to work hard on house training.  He's crate trained and knows some basic basic commands, such as "no," and "sit."

Since he is still a baby, Jenkins will require an adopter who is home a good part of the day - no exceptions!

Jenkins is up-to-date on vaccines and preventatives and will need to be neutered at the age of 6 months.

If you would like to meet Jenkins and learn about dog adoption, please contact PetConnect Rescue

Friday's Friend: Dog Adoption, A Forever Home!

WOOF!!!! Barkingly pawsome! I have two dog and cat rescue groups who have joined my "Friday's Friend" posts this week.  I am pleased to welcome "A Forever Home" from Chantilly, Virginia! A Forever Home works to rescue dogs and cats!!

I made a friend there that I would like to introduce to you!  Her name is Ginny, a 7-year old Lab Mix.
"Ginny"
Credit: A Forever Home
Ginny is a lovely, beautiful, sweet mid-sized dog with wonderful manners!  Want a dog who has never met a stranger, then she's your girl!!!  WOOF!!  I think she's hot! er, uh, excuse me- ARF?

Ginny has had a bit of a rough year- she gave birth to six beautiful pups that have been adopted, and she's been treated for heartworm. Barkingly, she torn her ACL and needs to undergo surgery.  Once that's done, WOOF!!, and she recovered, she will be looking for her "Forever Home" which she will probably be ready for in late August!

A Forever Home covers whatever medical needs are required of hte dogs in their care.  Once Ginny's surgery is complete, it will cost a pretty penny, nearly $5,000.  WOOF!  Pawingly, if you are not able to adopt, but like to help with Ginny's care, you can do so by donating at A Forever Home

Interested in adopting Ginny and to learn more about dog adoption, please email A Forever Home at info@aforeverhome.org if you’re interested in giving Ginny a forever home.

Friday's Friend: Cat Adoption, PetConnect Rescue

"Ringo"
Credit: PetConnect Rescue
Do you have a busy and hectic life but want to adopt a pet or need that special friend to be there when you get home?  Ever think about cat adoption? For busy people wanting the love of a pet, cat adoption is sometimes the best option.

My friend Cat Lady from PetConnect Rescue brought me a really cool cat for me to introduce to you!   Please meet Ringo!

This is one handsome cat dude!  Stunningly beautiful, checkout those eyes!  He has what I call "highpaw" breeding where his parents are of the regal variety, Mother was purebred Singapura and Father was Siamese.

He prefers to be the only cat in his kingdom as he is the ruler of all he surveys!

He is a friendly cat in a royal sort of way, healthy and always uses his litter box.

Interested in meeting this Prince of a cat?  Interested in learning about cat adoption?  Please visit PetConnect Rescue and complete the online application. Once that's done, one of their adoption coordinators will contact you.

Adoption procedures, fees, and applications may be viewed by clicking here.

Friday's Friend: Dog Adoption, Washington Humane Society

"Billy"
Credit: Washington Humane Society
SO COOL!!! WOOF!!!! I have always wanted to meet a Rottweiler, or Rotty as some like to say!! These dogs are often gentle giants! Thanks to Washington Humane Society's rescue work, I got to meet a Rottweiler AND get to paw him to you!

Meet Billy!  He is an eight-year-old, 74 lb., Rottweiler mix.  He is a laid-back lazy couch dog who is looking for his new best friend and "Forever Home."

Billy has the curiosity of a little pup.  He's polite on a leash and loves to be pet.  He paws to play and stay busy with any toys and games you can share with him!  WOOF!

Billy is heartworm positive, but it's really nothing to worry about- once he's adopted and found a home, the Washington Humane Society will pay for his treatment. After that, he'll be on the heartguard each month just like any other dog to prevent it from happening again.

Interested in meeting Billy and learning about dog adoption? You can meet him at the Washington Humane Society's New York Avenue Adoption Center! It's located at 1201 New York Avenue, NE, Washington, DC 20002, (202) 576-6664 or visit Washington Humane Society.

Noah's Houndisms - No Dogs Allowed

If no dogs are allowed, why would you want to visit or even go in the store- it's got to be barkingly boring not to have dogs around, after all, we're so pawsomely perfect that life would be uninteresting and unexciting without us around.

I think more places should allow us dogs to come in-! WOOF!!

Friday's Friend: Dog Adoption, Operation Paws for Homes

"Chita"
Credit: Operation Paws for Homes
Would a small dog be more for you than a big guy like me? Barkingly pawsome is a dog named Chita who loves to be spoiled! He is happy to be carried around, loved on, cuddled and smothered with kisses!

My friends from Operation Paws for Homes introduced me to him this week and I thought he might be the perfect size dog for one of my readers!

About 4 years old, and weighs about as much as one of my paws – 9 lbs., Chita loves to follow his foster mom around the house so he can be near her while working or doing some cuddling and snuggling! He loves to run and play too! His favorite toys are ones that squeak.

He takes his time making friends but once he does, they are friends for life. Chita seems to be alright around cats but, again, a slow introduction would be best.

Walking on a leash is a big adventure for him, though he does well, some of the outdoor noises are a bit much for him.

If you would like to meet Chita and learn more about dog adoption, please visit Operation Paws for Homes.

"Scout"
Credit: Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc.
WOOF!!! I am barkingly pawsome to meet “The Lab Lady” this week. She’s been busy caring for so many dogs these days! I love chatting with her about the work she does in helping Labrador Retrievers to find their “Forever Homes” along with the many other volunteers at Lab Rescue.

"Scout"
Credit: Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc.
Meet Scout, a young 5 year old, 69 lb. Black Labrador Retriever who happens to be almost as handsome as me! WOOF!!! Scout comes from the country, so he may not do well in an apartment, condo or a city environment.

The Lab Lady says “Scout is friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, brave, loyal, clean, continues to show good house manner and loves people! (oh wait a minute that’s the other Scouts)” WOOF! She has a good sense of humor! Scout is a good dog and has those traits which again, remind me of me!

Scout does well on walks in the neighborhood and is polite when meeting others. He’s good on a lead but does alerts on squirrels and rabbits!

Am not sure about his cat experience, probably good I met him after the other cats came by, but he gets along well with other dogs. And the same with children, no details on his experience so he’d be best for ages 10 and up.

He is crate trained and knows some basic commands!

Scouts up to date on vaccines. He is Heartworm and Lyme positive but is on Doxycycline to cure his Lyme and as pretreatment for his Heartworm treatment. Lab Rescue will pay for Heartworm treatment if done at one of our vets.

If you would like more information on Scout and dog adoption, please visit www.lab-rescue.org.

Friday's Friend: Cat Adoption, PetConnect Rescue

"Storm"
Credit: PetConnect Rescue

I love to support Cat Adoption.  Though I don't quite understand why it is, but sometimes dogs aren't for everyone- whether it be due to travel or schedules or just preference.  I don't know.  Barkingly, cats make good companions too and I've read where they help humans have happier lives too.

My friend "Cat Lady" introduced me to a cool cat nameed "Storm" who is looking for her "Forever Home."  Storm was named Storm by her foster because she thinks that I look like Halle Berry in X-Men (arf?) and because I'm fast as lightening.

Storms loves to find a nooks and crannies where she can have a great seat to watch the world go by as she tends to be a little more cautious than her brothers. She isn't going to get myself into any dangerous situations. At the first sign of trouble she's out of there!

Storm still enjoys rough housing with her cat brothers, Mickey, and Garfield. She gets along with the big dog in the house, rubbing up against her and purring. Storm loves to chase the dogs tail when she wags it but isn't too fond of all the doggie slobber (huh? what's wrong with that-woof!) but she'll tolerate it!

She loves to play with toys, especially wand toys and in a kitty tree.
"Storm"
Credit: PetConnect Rescue

Storm is a healthy, happy kitty who has perfect litter box manners.  She needs to go home with a human who has another kitten if the human's gone most of the day so she can be entertained while your out. Storm would love to be adopted with one of her brothers, Mickey or Garfield as they are really cool guys and look out for her!

Storm would make a great addition to any family.  If you would like to meet her or learn more about cat adoption, please complete an PetConnect Rescue's online application, click here and their Adoption Coordinator will contact you.

Friday's Friend: Cat Adoption, Washington Humane Society

"Spring"
Credit: Washington Humane Society

The Washington Humane Society has a cool young kitty for you to meet this week, her name is Spring.

Spring is a two-year-old, six lb., domestic, medium-haired cat. She is a spunky, adventurous  kitty who loves to play and explore, especially with her human all while remaining a "Princess" and wanting her human to treat her as such!  WOOF!

Spring is looking for a "Forever Home" where she would be her humans one and only cat!!  Not much to ask for the love and cuddling she'll share with you!

Interested in meeting Spring?  You can meet her at the Washington Humane Society's Georgia Avenue Adoption Center, 7319 Georgia Avenue, NW, Washington DC 20012, (202) 723-5730 or visit Washington Humane Society and learn about cat adoption.
