Happy New Year's Eve

WOOF!! Wow! It's New Years Eve already! What plans do you have for the evening?

My humans usually stay home and watch a little TV- they've rarely stayed up to usher in the New Year.  Dad doesn't like to drive or go far from home on New Year's Eve because of the possible craziness and drunk drivers on the road.

One of their favorite things to do is get their favorite snacks, some for me too, and watch DVD's of the Gaither and their Homecoming Friends.  They try to stay awake until midnight but it never works!  WOOF!!!

Occasionally, I hear Dad say he likes to stay home on New Year's Eve to take care of me when the fireworks go off.  He doesn't like to leave me alone with all the noise and lights!  BARK!!! He's a pawsome human!

If you are going out tonight, pawlease be careful, be safe and enjoy yourself.  If you are drinking, please don't drink and drive. Have a friend be a designated driver or call for a cab ride.

After all, your dog, your cat, your family, and most of all ME- needs you to return home safe and sound so you can read all the  pawonderful, exciting, pawtastic, stories and posts that I have to share with you in 2016.  I would miss you very much and think of you often.

So have fun.  Be safe.  Have a designated driver or call a cab.  We love you and want you to be around in 2016.  WOOF!!!!

Year-End Giving

WOOF!!  Are you looking to make a year-end donation?  A great place to donate and support in your community are animal rescues.

Cash donations really help the rescues with expenses as they rescue animals in need which, barkingly pawsome, help humans too.   Without me, my human would be absolutely crazy and even a bit strange, hee hee- woof! I am a living example of how great money donations benefit rescues.

Monthly cash donations are great too.  As that helps the rescue to plan for future expenses with their rescues.  One of my human volunteer friends noted that even a donation of $10 helps a dog or cat!

Other than that though- if you've ever wondered what the money is used for, barkingly, here's a list of just a few items which donations help support-
  • Needed medications - $25
  • Vaccinations to prevent life threatening illnesses - $50
  • An initial veterinary exam and vaccinations- $100
  • Spay or neuter - $250
  • Treatment for deadly heartworm - $350
  • Complete dental care for a neglected senior - $500
  • Collars and leashes - $15 - $25
  • Crates (Varies)
  • the list goes on-
If you are not able to give financially, another way is to donate items on their wish lists which are often listed on the rescues websites.  These items would include:
  • Towels
  • Rags
  • Blankets
  • Pillows / Dog Pillows
  • Dog Food
  • Dog Treats
Pawsome, another item you can donate, which is in need, is your time.  You could foster, train, transport or help with many office skills.

While there are many rescues to support, here is an alphabetical list of the ones we support with photography and writing at "From the Dog's Paw!"

Christmas Eve

It is the night before Christmas
and all through the house,
the quiet has come to the human's
with cheer,
the fixin's to be done...
presents wrapped...
the food's been bought..

it is time for all to stop
stop and rest
stop. watch and listen.
If you listen
You will hear it
a hush that comes
across the land
as does the dark of night
or light of morning.

All the hustle
All the bustle
ends on this Eve of Christmas
as if to usher in the
expectant Birth
of the Christ Child.

The quiet of the night
is a celebration of
The Birth of the King of Kings
that happens on
Christmas morning!

Merry Christmas!

Christmas Eve Eve

Used by Permission, GraphicStock

It is Christmas Eve Eve and all through the house and the neighborhood everyone is in a scurry to get the things done to celebrate Christmas for it is only a few days away!

The hustle and bustle leads to chaos and craziness throughout the house and the land, so you've got to pay particular attention to your dog and cat as you prepare for your celebrations.

Some dogs will get into everything- I am one of them!  WOOF!!  I must inspect everything my humans do so I can protect them from things they know not!  WOOF!!  Barkingly-
  • When wrapping gifts, be careful not to leave needles and pins from dress shirts or other clothing articles where they could get stepped on or accidentally chewed on or ingested-
    • Scotch tape, bows and ribbons and name tags can be of interest to the curious dog and cat!
  • Keep snacks and drinks away from dogs and cats reach.  I love to sneak samples, you know- just a quick lick- of something my human has to eat or drink.  He is careful not to allow me to get into anything that would upset my stomach!   Or worse, cause a trip to the Animal ER.
    • WOOF!  Of course this means snack trays really shouldn't be set out until the party is to begin!  arf.
    • Some human foods can be poisonous or just not "good" for your dog or cat to eat- be sure to research this and keep on top of it.
      • One time, as my human tells it, his prior dog got a good taste of pepperoni pizza.  The dog cried all night and had to go outside quite a bit which kept everyone up.
Used by Permission, GraphicStock
  • Decorating the tree- fun for everyone! WOOF!! I love being there with my humans.  Be sure to keep glass ornaments off the floor so your dog or cat do not step on them.
  • Consider securing your tree if you have a cat who might want to climb in it sending it tumbling to the ground.
    • Or, consider using a small tree on a table top or entertainment center where it would be less likely to get bothered by the cat.
    • That's not to say, dogs don't bother trees, we're less likely to knock them over.  BARK!
    • My humans quit placing sentimental ornaments on Christmas trees for fear of the cat's attack causing the tree to crash and break the ornaments.
  • Remember wagging tails can be strong and might knock off decorations and drinks or food placed on coffee tables.
  • And cats are naturally curious!
Keeping your dog and cats needs in mind while you are going through your day today- will help everyone have a safe and happy celebration.

Barkingly pawsome, if you get stressed out or things get to be too much to handle, take a break and pet your dog or cat- you'll enjoy de-stressing and your pet will love the attention!

Happy Winter Solstice- The Shortest Day of the Year

"Happy WINTER"- feels like I should be saying "Happy SPRING!!!"  We've had a glorious Fall season and Winter is starting on a great degree- in the 60's, maybe 70's.  Christmas Eve. the pawsome 70's!!  WOOF!!  Will get a few good long walks out of my human that day!

Today, is one of my human's favorite days despite that it's usually cold.  The first day of winter, known better to him as the "Shortest Day of the Year."  While the next few months will seem like the longest months and days of the year, my human likes this day because it means the days begin getting longer.

Used by Permission, GraphicStock
His favorite moment in the winter season? It's after several days have past, maybe a month, and my human notices the sun setting later than usual- like a 1/2 hour or so later.  For him, it means Spring and Summer are on their way- plan the outdoor activities! WOOF!!!!    He will jump for joy- I will stand in total embarrassment hoping no one notices!  WOOF!!!

Happy First Day of Winter!

Friday's Friend: Dog Adoption, Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League

"Abel"
(C) Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League
WOOF!!  Happy Friday!  Hope you have had a great week!!   This is so pawsingly COOL!!! I get to introduce you to two Great Danes this week!  The other one is "Stassi" who I shared about on another post!  WOOF!!

My friends at the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League brought by a character named "Abel" for you to meet.  I like the name.  Reminds me of the guy in the Bible and the last name of a later Baroque or early Classical composer period composer!  WOOF!  arf.

Abel is a great guy, wants to introduce himself to you- he worked all night to create this letter to you!  Meet Abel!

"Abel"
(C) Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League
"WOOF? Well maybe YARRRRR? Well… I don’t know really because my Foster mom has only heard my sort of bark once, but boy, do I love to make funny noises when I yawn! My Foster mom thinks I’m just about the most beautiful boy, but I’m not keen on that. I just love to love and also lay on a wonderful thing called a COUCH! Boy oh, boy!!! Do I love sleeping on that thing! I just recently got introduced to it since I have lived my life outside.

My Foster mom is very amazed at how fast I learn things! I’m a very smart boy that knows how to (scratch at the door when I need to go out) and push the screen door open if I need to go outside! Even if the gates open I don’t make a run for it, I think it’s because I finally like being where there is so much love.

I am house broken, and learning sit really well! But I have some more learning to go, but you can get me to do just about anything with a treat in your hand! I use to attack my food like I had never been fed before, but now I know I can leave it in the bowl and eat whenever (what a relief)! I love any kind of yummies!

I love to lean on my humans, but when it’s time to sleep I like my own space so I can stretch out! I can’t wait to have a Forever home that I can be lazy and a tad playful in (but I’m not at all rambunctious, foster mom loves that).  BARK!!

Abel is pawsitively anxious to find his "Forever Home" and his pawfect humans to love on-

Since he's a young pup and needs to learn more, there will be an obedience requirement as part of his adoption to ensure he continues to learn good manners and becomes the great dog he can!

Interested in meeting Abel and learning about dog adoption?  Please contact the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League.

Friday's Friend: Dog Adoption, Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League

I thoroughly enjoy meeting Great Danes- though I wish they had "Forever Homes" and I didn't have to share them with you- barkingly, since I do, they are fun dogs to play with.

My friends at the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League brought by a great dog for you to meet, please meet Stassi!

"Stassi"
(C) Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League
Miss "Stassi" is a 1 year-old, all Dane- all the funny and pawnderful Dane qualities: a paw on your arm when you're talking to her, an ability to find the most comfortable spot in the room to lay down and a love of humans- she's just in a little package!  WOOF!!!

Stassi wants to be with her human and will often move so she can be sitting right next to you!  WOOF!!! She loves listening to her human and will perk her ears while trying to get in your lap! BARK.

A very smart girl, she has learned and mastered the "sit" command in just a few minutes and is on her way to learning "down" and "come."

Calm on the leash and in the house, Stassi is curious about everything that is going on especially if there is food involved!  WOOF!! BARK!!  She is not a destructive girl or a chewer nor does she bark much.

"Stassi"
(C) Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League
Stassi has been known to climb or jump six foot fences in the past, but she seems to have settled, not wanting to escape, now that she has a couch to lay on, treats and a human to love.  She has handled going from kennel to foster care pawsingly well.  WOOF!

She is a lovely dog and just wants a forever person of her own!

Stassi is great with other dogs and children ages 8 years old and over.  She has had limited experience with cats.  She will come with an obedience training requirement as part of her adoption so she can continue to learn and become the great dog she can.

Interested in meeting Stassi, learning more about Great Danes and dog adoption?  Please contact the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League!

Friday's Friend! Dog Adoption, Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc.

Happy Friday!! Pawingly that you have a pawtastic week!  Mine has been great- my human and I have been having fun exploring new areas to walk or hike and sniff- well, he doesn't sniff, that would be a bit embarrassing!  WOOF!!

"Lab Lady" of Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc., has brought a very special fella for you to meet this week- his name is "Shadow!"

"Shadow"
(C) Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc.
Shadow is a sweet, 83 pound, 5 year-old, male, Chocolate Labrador Retriever. He was surrendered to Lab Rescue by his owner because he was hit by a car- his owner was going to euthanize him.

A country boy, not used to the noise and craziness of the city, he is looking for a "Forever Home" in the country, a rural area or a single-family home not in a busy neighborhood!  WOOF!!  Barkingly, he could use a home with few stairs.

A big, happy fella, though his leg could not be saved after he was hit by a car.  The leg had to be amputated but Shadow is getting around just fine!  WOOF!!

Shadow is adjusting well to having 3 legs and the change in balance!  He takes the time to figure out how to get around a room or his fosters house and even how to approach a tree to lift a leg! arf!  He's figured out how to climbs 2 steps to go out!

A big guy with a very gentle heart, he asks for love by gently placing his head on a lap and looking up with his big brown eyes!

Shadow gets along well with other dogs while at the shelter and he lived with other dogs in his previous home!  He gets along well with the dogs in his foster home too.

Shadow is crate trained.  Seems to enjoy having his own place. He did well downstairs while everyone else was upstairs!

A strong guy who loves to smell everything, he will pull hard when on a good scent, so he will need an easy walk harness when out on walks with his human.  WOOF!!

Shadow would make a great dog for someone looking for a gentle adult companion. BARK!

Shadow has no experience with cats.  He no children history so he's recommended for children ages 10 and up!

Interested in meeting Shadow and learning about dog adoption?  Please contact the Lab Rescue!

ALERT – Remington® Vinyl Dog Training Dummies

BARK!!! I received this product safety alert for the Center for Pet Safety- want to paw it with you!

"The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has published an incident involving a Remington Vinyl Dog Training Dummy manufactured by Coastal Pet Products. A needle was found inside of the toy."

Used by Permission, Center For Pet Safety

They further state "Pet owners who own a Remington Vinyl Dog Training Dummy (manufactured by Coastal Pet Products) should carefully inspect the product. The pet owner who found the needle in the toy, found that the toy rattled. If you find a needle in your training dummy toy please report it per the steps detailed below. We also recommend this rule of thumb: 'When in doubt – throw it out'."

According to the news release, "The pet owner’s children and dog were playing with the toy in a pool, and when the dog tore off the top of the toy, a needle was found inside. The dog may have incurred injury from the needle based on the pet owner’s account, however, they could not be certain. It is important to note that the Consumer Product Safety Commission does not classify pet products as consumer products and does not normally provide oversight to the pet products industry. Center for Pet Safety applauds their disclosure of this incident."

(CPSC Report Date: 12/03/2015)

Report It!

Pet Owners who find needles (or other sharp objects) in their pet’s toy should report the incident immediately to Center for Pet Safety, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, your state’s Attorney General (Office of Consumer Protection), department of public health and the toy’s manufacturer.

Pet owners should thoroughly document the incident, including images and video to share as part of the report. Pet owners should not discard the toy, or relinquish it to the manufacturer. Additionally, if any manufacturer presents you with any paperwork to sign, The Center for Pet Safety recommends that pet owners consult with an attorney so that you fully understand your rights – and those that you are throwing away by signing.

The pet products industry is a $60 Billion highly unregulated industry – and pet toys are NOT required to be tested or meet safety standards. Center for Pet Safety feels that unsafe toys put pets and the people who love them at risk. Pet product standards and safe manufacturing practices need to be developed to ensure product safety for anyone who comes in contact with a pet product. Additionally, product materials need to be regulated to ensure safety.

Product Review: Ruff Guide to the United States

WOOF! WOOF!! Do you have a dog lover on your Christmas Gift list who loves to hang out with his dog- who may want travel with him?  I have the perfect gift for that person- read on-

Used by Permission, Ruff Guide and
BringFido

Barkingly pawsome- this book, "Ruff Guide to the United States" - 365 of the best places to stay and play with your dog in all 50 states- is a pawfect resource for the dog lover! WOOF!! WOOF!! BARK!!!

My human received this book from Jason and Melissa Halliburton of BringFido after meeting them at a dog event he was photographing!

With the face of a Golden Retriever with a tennis ball by a lake on the cover, it intrigued me to take a sneak at look at the book when my human went to do an errand!

The first thing I love about the book is the page, "Fido's Bucket List!"  A place where I can note all the places I want my human to take me- and, maybe I'll let him list a few.

I pawed through the pages and found about 365 places I'd like to go with my human and I know he'd enjoy going with me- but since that may not be pawsible, I've selected several places to share with you that I know my human would want to go see and I'd love to be right there pawing with him. Am still going to push for every pawlace we can go!  WOOF!!

Zion National Park
Springdale, Utah

Zion National Park is one of my human's favorite places! He loves the cabins by the lodge you can stay in. Not to mention, how absolutely beautiful the park is to visit.  He is determined to go back there one day so am going to try to convince him to take me with him.

Now, this could be paws of fun!  WOOF!!  We could take an early morning drive along the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway looking for wildlife- I'll have to pawmise to behave myself! After our drive, I'll pawsuade my human to stop for a walk at the pet-friendly Pa'rus Trail, a two-mile paved path that runs alongside the Virgin River!

In the afternoon, we'll take a tour with the Zion Adventure Company- my human will love this- a 2.5 hour ride in an open-air converted 1974 Mercedes Benz Unimog traveling through the canyon Overland Cliffs and Canyons Backcountry.

Tours operate daily from March through October. Admission fees for humans, but, dogs are free!  WOOF!!!!!

Corolla, North Carolina

Now, this one looks like a pawcellent adventure for my human mom and I! We both enjoy the beach and horses- though she can't go horseback riding on wild horses, she would love looking at them.

At the Corolla Outback Adventures, we will have private access to the Wild Horse Conservation Easement where we'll visit refuge areas and sanctuary sites that are home to Colonial Spanish Mustangs! During the tour, we may see horses walking the beach and maybe playing in the surf!

Fees charged for humans, well-behaved dogs are free.

After the tour, there is more for humans and their dogs to do at the dog-friendly Wild Horse Museum in Old Corolla Village!

As I pawed, these are only a sample of the many listings in this pawcellent book for dog lovers!

Paws to BringFido for their efforts in producing the pawcellent book!

Interested in purchasing this book, visit Ruff Guides!

Disclaimer and legalese: I did not receive treats, dog biscuits, any dog food or  toys to write this review.  My human didn't receive a Hershey bar, sliced apples, grapes or anything else he loves to eat to write this review.

We received a copy of it and decided to share our opinion with you!

Friday's Friend! Cat Adoption, Animal Welfare League of Arlington

The beauty of cats.  It's something that I've learned.  Didn't take me long as I am one smart dog- gotta be to the Pawthor of this blog- but I see many great cats looking for homes, and I've read there are more cats than dogs looking for homes.

My friend at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington has introduced me to a 4 year-old domestic short hair cat looking for a "Forever Home!"  Am pawleased to introduce "Elmo" to you!  WOOF!!!

"Elmo"
(C) Animal Welfare League of Arlington
A very curious kitty, Elmo has lots of energy and enjoys exploring the world around him.

Elmo loves humans and their attention and will head-butt you to get it!!  He is a very affectionate kitty and would love to become your best friend!

If you would like to learn more about cat adoption, please contact the Animal Welfare League of Arlington.

Friday's Friend: Dog Adoption, Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc.

BARK!!! WOOF!!!! Often, I wish I could provide "Forever Homes" to every single dog and cat in the universe that need humans and a place to live! WOOF! and MEOW!!!   And, when my friend "Lab Lady" brings a young Labrador Retriever to me to share with you, it breaks my paw heart.  I love all dogs and cats, but, being part Lab, sometimes it hits home. arf.

"Lab Lady" brought a beautiful young, 57 lbs., 18-month old female Yellow Labrador Retriever for you to meet this week!

Meet Brazil!

"Brazil"
(C) Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc.
If you live in the country, a rural setting or a single family home with a fenced backyard, you've got to meet this pawnderful, pawtastic girl.  She has no exposure to city life and she really needs to go home with another dog.

Brazil is a shy young lady who is still coming out of her shell.  Though she loves to play with her fosters dogs, new situations still scare her. The humans who adopt her will need to give tender loving care and have patience to help her learn her new environment.  She will need a home without quick movements so she can learn.

Brazil has become a most excellent master at the game, "steal all the inside toys and bring them outside so Foster mama can pick them up and bring them inside again. Repeat!"  WOOF!- I'll have to try that on my humans- hee hee.  Clearly her favorite game! She enjoys a game of kickball too!  Squeaky toys are her game too, and she loves to hoard them!

Excellent at crating, she does enjoy her dog bed near her foster mom.

Brazil has learned a few basic commands but is still learning.  She loves chin pets and all the attention you can give!

If you are looking for a quiet, easy going companion, Brazil might be the dog for you!

Brazil has no history with children so he's recommneded for children ages 10. Nor does she have a known history with cats.  She is good with other dogs.
"Brazil"

Friday's Friend: Cat Adoption, PetConnect Rescue

WOOF!! WOOF!! And, er, uh, meow!  I am happy to catch up with "Miss C" at the PetConnect Rescue.  She has been doing all kings of fun things with the dog and cat adoption- this week she brought by a cat and a dog for you to meet.

Sometimes I am asked why I support cat adoption since I am a dog.  A big dog. And, normally dogs chase cats.  Woofingly, and don't tell mom or my Crazy Aunt (yes, the one that you've been warned about- we have one too), but I have tried to chase a few cats- that is, until I learned what great pets they make.

Besides a cat brother, I have two cat cousins, Zoey and Max, who are incredible characters! I can see what a great job they do with Crazy Aunt.  So, cat adoption is an important part of life!  And, cats make excellent pets for many people, some who can't adopt dogs or want a pet with less work.. arf?   And, being related to them gives me reason to support cat adoption.

My friend "Miss C" brought by a cute young kitty that I'd like you to meet, J.J.!

"J.J."
(C) PetConnect Rescue
A beautiful 14-week old black and white tuxedo kitten who was rescued by PetConnect Rescue from a rural shelter in North Carolina, J.J. is at a foster home awaiting the perfect humans and a "Forever Home!"

J.J. is a playful kitty, he loves bouncy toys, climbing up the cat tree and rough-housing with his brother Jimmy and taking a snooze on the bed.  MEOW!

J.J. is up-to-date on his vaccinations and ready to go HOME!!! PURRR!!!!!!!

If you are interested in meeting J.J., please complete the PetConnect Rescue Adoption Application.  One of their Adoption Coordinators will contact you!

To learn more about cat adoption, please visit PetConnect Rescue Adoption Guide.

Friday's Friend! Dog Adoption, Washington Humane Society

"Ivy"
(C) Washington Humane Society
WOOF! WOOF!! WOOF!!! I have had a barkingly pawsome week- hope you have too.

Many of my friends visited bringing friends for you to meet- one of them is the Washington Humane Society in Washington, D.C.- haven't been there yet but I hear it's a great place to visit and learn about the nation's history.  This week, my friends brought 3 1/2 year old, "Ivy" by to meet you!

Who could pawsibly resist such as beautiful sweet face as Ivy!  Melting hearts and loving humans is a natural talent of hers!  WOOF!!!   A sweet, reserved young lady who came to the Washington Humane Society as a stray.  Though she has had some hard times, she isn't let that stop her!

Ivy hasn't met any other dogs yet so if you're looking for a companion for your current dog, it'll be a pawsome idea for them to meet first.

If you are looking for a pawnderfully sweet, pawsome dog to adopt and have never do so before, she may be the pawfect dog for you! ARF!!
Used by permission, GraphicStock

Ivy is part of the Hidden Gem program with the Washington Humane Society. Pawsomely, this means she's had her own set of humans to teach basic training commands so she will be extra ready to settle into her new "Forever Home!"

Barkingly, Ivy's adoption fee will be waived, however the standard adoption procedures will apply!

Interested in meeting Ivy and learning about dog adoption?  Please visit the Georgia Avenue Adoption Center, 7319 Georgia Avenue, NW, Washington, DC, 20012, (202) 723-5730 or Washington Humane Society.

***************

As a Hidden Gem, I get my very own volunteers who spend extra time with me and work with me on basic training needs. That way, I'll be extra ready to settle into my new home! And, because I've been here a little bit longer than my friends, staff have had the opportunity to get to know me really well, and they will gladly answer any questions you may have about me.

As an extra "thank you" for considering taking me home, my adoption fee has been waived*!

*Standard adoption procedures apply.” http://bit.ly/1S8bzyX
