WOOFS! Happy Friday! I hope you are enjoying this hot weather but are being safe too, especially with your dog! Dogs can get overheated in this weather faster than humans do. My human is half-crazy as he loves to be out in it as much as pawssible. Barkingly, at least he knows when to take me and Abby inside or to leave us inside to start with!

Are you looking for a pawsome buddy to spend your free time with? My friend, Miss Kim, from the Homeless Animals Rescue Team (HART) brought by a beautiful girl named Clue for you to consider adopting. She is looking for her "Forever Home!" with humans to love who will love her too.

Clue is around 3 years old, a Terrier mix. She is friendly with some dogs and no known history with cats. She is friendly with older mini-humans. Barks. She would be happiest as your one-and-only-dog-that-is!

Woofingly, Clue is a shy Southern Belle who warms up gradually to her humans and doggy friends. She's not sure why they call her Clue but she responds well to "Little Girl!"

Paws, she has great house manners- is crate- and house-trained. Barksy, she is well-versed in many commands too.

Clue loves rolling in soft grass, being outdoors and chew toys for strong chewers, bones, tug toys, and balls. WOOFS! No worries, it's rude to chew on anything but the toys her human gives her! She loves running like the wind in a fenced yard and going for long walks. Paws, though she loves to pawlay with you, when its time to go inside, she's ready to go wherever with you!

Friday's Friend! Dog Adoption, Lab Rescue

Black Labrador Retriever Dog Adoption

My friend "Lab Lady" from Lab Rescue stopped by this week with a young fella named Smokey who is looking for his "Forever Home!" with humans to love who will love him too!

Black Labrador Retriever Dog Adoption
Barkingly, Smokey is a Black Labrador Retriever around 2 years old. His "Forever Home!" should be a single-family home located in a rural or suburban area. A physical fence is required, no underground fence. BARKS! He will have a training addendum attached to his adoption.

Smokey is a happy, pawsomely grand cuddle bug who loves everyone. He is a very smart guy who likes to pawlease his humans.

He enjoys car rides, zoomies, de-stuffing toys, and, paws, pawforming squeakerectomies. Squeakerectomies? BARKS! Abby and I like to do that! Barks, it's chewing out the squeaker thingy in toys! Woofs.

Barks, Smokey enjoys going for walks, watching TV, pawlaying with dogs, and protecting the yard from vermin! Woofs. He is very good on a leash. If he gets distracted on walks, his foster humans use the "quiet command" to redirect him.
Black Labrador Retriever Dog Adoption

Smokey recently welcomed another foster dog into his foster home and is showing her the ropes!

Barks, he knows lots of commands and have gotten to level 3 on puzzles with very little assistance!

Paws, he has gained lots of confidence in public. Bark, he went to Lowe's when it was relatively quiet and a soccer tournament. At the game, he did well interacting with other humans and dogs. His foster mom did offer distractions to help him when a dog kept passing. He didn't bark once!

Barkingly, Smokey is not a fan of rain or water. He will hide if someone is pawlaying with a water gun.

Paws, he isn't a fan of being led by his collar to a different room.

Smokey created a few videos to help with his adoption:

Squeaky Toy

Watch Smokey play chase

Checking Out the Pool

Playing with a Treat Puzzle

Playing with a Stuffie

Smokey is recommended for mini-humans ages 10 and older. He is good with other dogs. Unknown history with cats.

Annabelle is around 10 years old, an Australian Shepherd mix, is friendly with other dogs and pawssibly with mini-humans. She is unknown with cats!

(C) 2023, from The Dog's Paw!
Paws, Annabelle came from a hoarding situation and it is pretty amazing the she survived! Given the situation, she is so happy to be able to move around, explore, and be loved and cared for by humans.

Barkingly, Annabelle is a very quiet and gentle dog. She is very well-mannered. Her foster mom tells us that "she is a good girl trying to get the hang of being a dog!"

Woofs, she loves slow but steady walks and being pet! She likes following her humans around the house.

Friday's Friend! Dog Adoption, The Humane Society of Loudoun County

Dog Adoption

Woofs! Barks! My furriends from The Humane Society of Loudoun County brought by a 70-pound lap dog looking for his "Forever Home!" with humans to love who will love him too! Meet Nash, a mixed breed approximately 6 years old.

Barkings, Nash is a well-behaved, super-cuddly, goofball fella who always wants to be with his humans. He is loveable, faithful, and a very good boy.

Dog Adoption
He enjoys visits with the horses.

Nash has pawlenty of energy to run around. His humans could take him running or hiking, and he equally enjoys just cuddling on the couch and watching a movie with you!

Paws, he does have some anxiety around very small mini-humans. He is not recommended for homes with mini-humans under 10 years old who haven't been taught to interact with a large dog.

Wooflys, he seems to want to chase small things with unexpected movements. Paws, so no cats in the home.

(C) 2023, from The Dog's Paw!
Nash needs to get to know his humans before he is ready to give full affection. If he is excited and held against his will, he will give a warning nip.

He is a big fella who knows how to use his size to get what he wants.

Barks, Nash graduated from his training program and is doing pawsitively well with minding his manners. His trainer offers some follow-up training for his adopter along with complimentary group classes (more details available to applicants).

Nash has had a doggy DNA test done (in 2017) and it came back as 50% Staffordshire Terrier, 25% Great Pyrenees, and 25% “mixed” breeds. Paws, he is healthy, neutered, and current on his vaccinations.

New Website: Wednesday's Words! Encouragement from God's Word

(C) 2023, Wednesday's Words!
Our human, who is our Administrative Assistant, has finally finished creating a new website, Wednesday's Words, Encouragement from God's Word.

Woofs, a little background, when Dad was a young boy some many centuries ago, his parents would take him to church on Sundays and Wednesday nights. Being the cute, adorable, adventurous, little boy he was (yes, I got extra treats for pawing that), he wanted to be outside pawlaying instead of going to church. I know, really? Good thing they made him go to church... it's proved to be beneficial to him... woofs.

Barkingly, over the years, he came to realize that going to church on Wednesday nights was actually quite encouraging. It helped him get through the workweek. And he grew to miss it.

Centuries later, in his older years, Dad started a photography business with a website and a blog. He'd share his photography work but thought one day that it'd be great to encourage other photographers and artists with a post on Wednesdays. The post was "Wednesday's Words! Encouragement from God's Word." He received some pawsitive feedback from it too.

Barks, last November, when he began to close his photography business, he noticed that he was missing the creating and posting of Wednesday's Words! He enjoyed the creativity and encouragement of humans during their workweek. Paws, these days, every human can use every bit of encouragement they can get. The new website, Wednesday's Words was born.

The idea is to share encouragement that aligns with God's Word's teachings. This might include Scriptures, quotes, hymns, praise songs, quips, humorous sayings, and so on.

If you would like to receive an email of encouragement on Wednesdays, please subscribe to the posts he'll send out by email every Wednesday at 6 a.m. BARK! BARK! Don't worry, he doesn't share your email with anyone, human, canine, or feline!

Dogs, Fireworks, and the Fourth of July

(C) 2023, from The Dog's Paw!

Woofs! Barks! GRRRRR! GROWLS!!!!!! HISS! HISS!

Firecrackers!

Fireworks displays!

Bottle rockets!

Sparklers!

Careless humans!

Are all to blame for the loss of several barking friends over the years around this time of the year! What? You say? Did you know that more dogs, cats too, go missing during the July 4th celebrations with all their horribly loud noises and the extreme flashes of light are not your dog's best friend- not even a close cousin!

Barks, to your dog, these noises and light flashes of fireworks are unlike other loud noises, such as thunderstorms, because they are closer to the ground, louder, brighter, and have nasty burning smells. Barkingly, thunderstorms come on gradually with related signs; fireworks do not. Since dogs experience the world through noses, eyes, and ears, fireworks can be a pawsitively overwhelming time for them! WOOF!! These frighten dogs causing them to run and hide.

A few barks of preparation will keep your dog safe, sound, and happy! My humans plan to be home with me, Samson, and Abby making sure we have pawlenty of treats, snacks, and water! We'll pawssibly watch music concerts or TV shows without any loud booming noises from the 4th celebrations. Dad will typically turn up the volume a bit, so it tends to drown out any neighborhood fireworks. Barks. Sometimes, I will curl up in my crate not too far from Mom and Dad. Abby likes to go to the basement, Dad's studio, and lay on the couch. She says it's her safe spot and likes it best. Samson, as you know, cats will do what they want when they want, and will find his spot where he does! Woofs!

If you are going out, consider having a friend stay with your pets. My uncle Ed loves to stay with us when Dad needs him. Barkingly, Doggie Day Care could be an option for your dog too! If you make arrangements unfamiliar to your dog, take him there a few times ahead of his stay.

Woofs, Dad will let us out in the backyard and take us for walks earlier than normal on the 4th. Paws, the loud noises of fireworks may cause dogs to jump fences or take off running, so be pawpared. Abby tends to want to pull on the leash more than she normally does, so we go early to avoid the pawblems.

Barkingly, putting a comfortable, tight-fitting T-Shirt on your dog is a pawsome way to help them feel secure. Paws, you can buy a Thundershirt, which has proven to be a pawcellent method for helping dogs relax.

Paws, if your dog seems to have a barkingly rough time with the fireworks, paw with his Veterinarian for solutions. A Veterinarian can offer sedation methods and ideas which would help the dog relax. These methods should be checked out ahead of time so you’ll both be prepared and there will be no surprises.

Barkingly, if you expose your dog to these noises in a positive manner at an early age, like 3 weeks to 3 months, you may be able to de-sensitize them. I recommend asking a dog trainer for ideas to assist with this.

BARK! The most important thing you can do for your dog is to stay relaxed! Don’t fuss with your dog during fireworks, as it just reassures them it’s a time to be afraid or apprehensive. Accept the situation and do your best to make your dog happy and comfortable.
