Cost Cutting Canine Care: Ways to Make Your Dog’s Day-to-Day Care Cheaper

Owning any pet is a big responsibility and not something that should be entered into lightly – particularly if you have any financial constraints or concerns. With research from Pet Education indicating that the average cost of owning a dog during it’s 14 year life span is over $12,000 (and high end care up to a staggering $38,000) it’s unsurprising that many dog owners find themselves struggling with unexpected yet inevitable costs. Sadly, financial pressures are among the top reasons why so many dogs are abandoned each year.

Knowingly denying a dog basic care or medical treatment is not just morally wrong, but legally wrong too. But when unforeseen circumstances crop up it can hit your bank balance hard and leave you with difficult decisions to make. However with a little forward planning, budgeting and careful considerations there are ways that you can keep the cost of owning a dog down while still giving them the care they need and deserve. This means that should any unexpected expenses arise you could be in a better position to pay for them. Here are some tips on keeping your costs down and picking the dog that’s ‘financially’ right for you.

Consider the breed
Throughout history pet dogs have been a sign of social status and today you will find that certain breeds will cost you more to buy upfront – some of the most expensive breeds include the Akita, the Tibetan Mastiff and the English Bulldog. Pedigree (or ‘purebred’) pups will probably look great and have good behavioral traits but sadly many are prone to ill health and hereditary conditions. Mongrels or ‘cross breeds’ are thought to be healthier because they have a larger gene pool and generally cost less to buy too.

Researching your breeds in general is helpful. Unfortunately some breeds are just higher risk than others and this will not only leave you more likely to incur vet bills in the future, but it will probably make your pet insurance premiums higher too. Of course, nobody can predict the exact health of any individual dog but it is thought that certain breeds such as Beagles and Border Collies are considered relatively healthy whereas others, such as King Charles Spaniels, are more fragile and prone to respiratory and heart issues. Taking all of this into account means that you can make an educated decision on what type of breed you can ‘afford’ to own given the possible risk factors.

Be frugal with accessories
An increasingly celebrity fueled culture means that many people go to town on their dogs toys, bedding, clothing and accessories. This is usually for their own satisfaction rather than their dogs benefit. Instead of looking for the collar or leash with the most diamantes, look for durability instead. Buying strong, practical equipment will mean that they will last longer and your dog will be safer and more secure when you take him out for walks.

When it comes to bedding or toys visit garage sales or thrift stores. Your dog will not care if his bedding is second hand and will probably love an old soft toy just as much as the overpriced toys and paw print blankets usually found in high end pet stores.

Feeding
When you’re on a cost saving mission it can be tempting to go for budget dog meat. But dogs are like humans; they need vital nutrients, a well balanced diet and good quality food to thrive and maintain good health. The healthier your dog is, the less likely you are to have to face expensive medical conditions in the future – and of course, it makes your dog happier and healthier too. You don’t necessarily have to opt for the highest end products all of the time but read the labels when buying their food and look out for ‘meat’ and ‘vegetables’ in the ingredients list rather than grainy products such as corn, wheat and soy which are simply cheap ways to fill up the tin and often contain too much protein for your dog to healthily digest. Similarly try and avoid food that contains an excess amount of additives, chemicals and artificial flavorings.

Buying food in bulk is also a good way to save money – often the larger the amount that you buy the cheaper it will cost.

Protect against medical problems
Regular trips to the vet may seem like an unnecessary expense, particularly if your dog isn't showing any signs of ill health. But regular check ups can be key in maintaining good health and identifying any problems in the early stages – thus leading to quicker, simpler and cheaper treatments. It is generally recommended that you visit the vet every 6 months for a check up.

Similarly, a good pet insurance policy is a great way to give you peace of mind should your dog suffer an accident or sudden illness. Always check your policy carefully though. Some policies do not protect against pre-existing conditions or cover your dog if he suffers from the same ailment twice. Shop around until you find the best deal to suit your dog.

Do it yourself
When it comes to grooming and training there are a wealth of classes and professional assistance on the market all of which come with a high end price tag. Instead of lining other people’s pockets, buy a book or research online and learn how to do these things yourself. It will mean that your dog can benefit from regular care from you and this will build your bond. You will also learn new skills and may even be in a position to offer your expertise to other dog owners in the future.

If you have no interest in learning how to train or groom your dog then pick a breed accordingly – for example do not choose a long haired dog if you aren’t willing to spend money grooming him or doing it yourself.

Congratulations to the Barkers Dozen

Congratulations to my friends at the The Barkers Dozen, an organic and eco-friendly dog treat company on the GRAND OPENING of their new brick and mortar store, called Paw Street Barkery!! The Barkery is located at 685 James Street, Chicopee, Massachusetts 01020.

Well-behaved, vaccinated, and leashed dogs are encouraged to bring their humans to this new pet-friendly store. The store gives you and your human the opportunity to fully experience and sample the wholesome goodness, quality ingredients, fun and love that is baked into every organic dog treat the company creates.  Paw Street Barkery stocks the entire line of organic dog treats made by The Barkers Dozen, including its signature flavors, gourmet carob treats and holiday gift boxes!  If you haven't gotten treats in a gift box, you are really missing out- BARK at your human- you need this experience!

Several months ago, I became associated with them while assisting with a fund raiser for a dog and human in need.   To my surprise, soon after the fundraiser was finished, I got a nice package of treats from them for helping out.  I loved them!!  For Christmas 2012, my human bought me some treats from them and again they are delicious.

"Opening our a retail store that allows customers to touch, taste, and smell our products, while engaging with our people, is a historic milestone for The Barkers Dozen,” said Shawn Sherry, company president and CEO. “We aim to educate pet owners about the importance of their pets’ health, and how ingredients in their furry friends’ food play a critical role. Opening a retail storefront in our hometown not only allows us to better achieve this objective, but is a natural evolution for our company, allowing our loyal customers a convenient shopping experience – both online and in-store.”

Paw Street Barkery will also become the central bakery location for the company, where fresh-baked organic dog treats will be produced through a long-standing partnership with Aditus, Inc., an organization that provides community-based employment and other services to Intellectually Disabled Individuals. As part of The Barkers Dozen’s mission to give back to its community through social responsibility, it has partnered with Aditus Group to bake and package its treats since 2011.

Friday's Friends - Washington Humane Society

A busy week for me- started off with having my humans home because of the Inauguration. Dad and I went on two exploring meandering walks which are so much fun. On Tuesday, Dad was working in his studio a good part of the day, but, as usual, he found time for another exploring meandering walk!  We go for a walk every day, but these special walks are real treats for me.

I didn't attend the Inauguration -too crowded for my taste, so I worked on my blog and website with my human.  I got an email this week from a colleague at the Washington Humane Society this week about Levi, who is in need of a "Forever Home."
"Meet Levi"

Need a little puppy love? Levi’s your guy! This 10-month-old pit bull terrier type puppy came to WHS on August 28, 2012 as a stray found near the 4900 block of Fort Totten Drive, NE. Levi is smart and charming. He’s learning house-training, crate-training, and commands like sit, down, and stay, but fetch is his favorite. Levi loves meeting his neighbors when out for a walk or run, and he just can’t wait to meet you! Please email his foster mom Stephanie.

Cool dog!  Thank you to the Washington Humane Society for the image and information on Levi!

The Importance of Keeping Your Pet Clean

"Clean Dogs Are Healthy Dogs"
The Importance of Keeping Your Pet Clean

I have heard and seen to often, owners pushing their pet away telling them "Go away, you stink". Sadly, the pet doesn't know why it is being rejected by its beloved human. He may be thinking, "What did I do wrong that you won't hug and cuddle with me", which, by the way, puts stress on the animal.

As a long time professional pet groomer and vet tech, I had experienced dogs and cats with many different odors. I along with several other techs and groomers did a study on the odor of 100's of dogs. Certain breeds have a unique odor, as well as dogs of certain colors. Black dogs when wet, smell similar no matter what breed they are, as well as white dogs of any breed. Dogs with different types of coats have a distinctive odor. Long thick coats, short dense coats, and curly coats all have their own unique odor. These particular testings were done on clean or wet dogs. This is not to say the order is bad, it is just a certain type of odor.

Now we will take a look at the dirty dogs. Dirt mixed with other odors can be foul smelling as well as unhealthy for both the pet and their humans. Many people have been told at some point in their lives, that too many baths can hurt your pet or dry out their coats. Have you ever watched a dog show on TV and admired the gorgeous dogs in the show? Do you think the show dogs get bathed only a couple of times a year? They are bathed frequently to keep their whites as white as can be, and their coats fluffy and clean. Most people bathe their pets only 1-4 times per year. Personally, I bathe my Alaskan Malamutes every 2 weeks. The famous Cesar Milan (the dog whisperer) bathes his dogs once a week. Why should a pet be bathed so often you may ask? Have you ever seen the coat and skin of a dirty dog under a microscope? Probably not. If you did, you would have nightmares for a month, and know what I am talking about.

"Washing A Dog"
First we have to look at the location where the dog lives. City life may seem simple where your pet is just going in and out for potty time. But the oils, and pollution from trains, planes, and automobiles floating in the air, can build up on your pets coat over time. If you live in dry areas with sand mixed in the soil, your pet will have particles of dust and sand in his coat. Areas with red clay mixed in the soil, may stain your pets coat from the red color of the clay, as well as pick up other particles within the soil. Swampy or humid areas will bring moisture to the coat and may cause mildew to form in areas around the collar, arm pits, bellie, etc. All of these things can cause irritation to the skin. Ants, gnats, dust mites, and mosquitoes, are some of the insects that may attach themselves to your pets coat while they are outdoors. Your pet may be bringing all of the things mentioned here into your home. On rainy days, my long coat malamute had brought earthworms into the house which were on her coat while she briefly laid down on the ground. Pretty gross. But most of the stuff your pet may bring in, you may not see or know about.

Second, think of all of these things on your pet. If you have more than one pet, they will be bringing things in as well. Not only on a weekly basis, but for months at a time, as long as the pet is not clean. There are too many pets taken to shelters due to allergies within the family who may be allergic to their pets. This can be prevented with frequent baths, whether the pet is stinky or not. My sister is allergic to cats. I had a long coat cat for almost 19 years. My sister was the one who took care of the cat while my husband and I were away on vacation. She didn't need medication to stop her allergy to my cat. The reason for that, is because I bathed it every 4 weeks. Cats have a very high level of bacteria in their mouths. They clean themselves several times a day. What do they clean themselves with? Their tongue of course. So they are putting that bacteria right onto their coats. Not to mention the dust and dander as well. If they are bathed often, those things will not collect on the cats coat and cause as many allergies.

Dirt, dander, and nicotine, make a thick coating of grayish white film on the pets coat. If you take a powerful pet dyer and blow the dry coat, you will see all of that blowing into the air along with the dead coat. You and your family are actually breathing this in on a daily basis. If you allow your pets on your carpets and furniture, it is in there as well. This can cause irritations in your nose, throat and eyes, and contribute to the sinus infections, colds, flues and red eyes that you and your family may get throughout the year.

Thirdly, keeping your pet clean is not only healthy for you and your pet, but it is also bonding time as well. Brush your pet every day. Even if the books say to do it weekly. Your pet will love the time you spend together with him. By brushing your pet, you can find debris, bugs, lumps, tangles, etc. on their coat or skin and take care of it immediately instead of finding out about it months later. Once I was brushing one of my malamutes, and found a huge lump on her back. I freaked out thinking it was a tumor. How could I have not noticed that lump before I asked myself. Well it turned out to be an allergic reaction to a bite she got from a millipede. If I didn't find it when I did, she may have had a bigger reaction and died. Brushing also helps loosen the dead coat and prevent the pet from shedding all over the house and furniture.

Bathing your pet
Use a gentle shampoo such as Nature's Choice Aloe Basic. Do not use a shampoo that has heavy perfumes in it. It can dry out the coat and is hard on the sensitive nose of the animal. Cats can be bathed often as well. Use very warm (not hot) water to bathe them. Turn the water on before putting the pet in the tub so it doesn't scare them. If you prefer, take the cat to a groomer to bathe.

Be sure to get the water and shampoo down to the skin. You may use a conditioner or moisturizers to keep the hair from static in winter months. Also use vitamin E or fish oil in their diets to help keep their skin and coat looking great.

"Dry the Coat Completely"
Use a powerful force dryer like the K9 2 on medium to large animals or those with heavy undercoats. It does a great job at removing dead coat, and dries the coat down to the skin. For smaller or older dogs, use the smaller metro dyer. If the dog is air dried, the undercoat does not dry properly and will cause the coat to get mildew, especially on Labs and Huskies.

Bathing your pet often will bring you and your pet closer together, and they will love you for it. Check out Pet Edge for great grooming products at PetEdge.com.

Friday's Friend - PetConnect Rescue

Of course, it would not be Friday if I didn't have a visit from my friend, the Cat Lady of PetConnect Rescue!!  She is so wonderful to the cats that come into her loving arms!

"Aren't I cute?" asks Dahlia
Meet Dahlia!

Dahlia was abandoned at a rural dump. Despite her unhappy previous circumstances, she is a wonderfully sweet kitten. Very gentle and loves all people. Dahlia is also curious and playful.

Currently, she shares her foster home with Patches, another foster kitty, who she loves to chase around the house and play kitten games! Dahlia also lives with a dog and with children. She loves to sleep on the kids' beds (by their feet) at night.

Dahlia is healthy, up-to-date with her vetting, and she always uses her litter box. For more information, please click here and fill out our online application. We will contact you.

Thank you to "Cat Lady" and PetConnect Rescue for supplying the information for Friday's Friend.

Friday's Friend - Washington Humane Society

Miss Lauren from the Washington Humane Society paid me a visit early this weekend and surprised me! She brought a cat with her- she's been bringing dogs and I was expecting a dog but she brought a cat which is actually fine because I share my blog with cats too, now snakes would be another issue!

"Cocoa"
I would like for you to meet Cocoa!!

Cocoa is quite the talker. Don't let her shyness fool you, she just loves to play coy. At six years old, Cocoa came to WHS from a home on O Street NW. She’s coming up on her two year anniversary with WHS, having arrived in February, 2011.

She just loves belly rubs and ear scratches. If your house is quiet and your lap is warm, Cocoa could be your perfect match! Watch her play by visiting her pet page. Email her foster mom at rbrevetti@aol.com to meet her.

Thank you to Miss Lauren and The Washington Humane Society for providing me the information for today's Friday's Friend.

Friday's Friend- PetConnect Rescue

My friend "Cat Lady" is at it again!!  She visited me this week with one of her "Cat Buddy's" from PetConnect Rescue in Potomac, Maryland.

"Greyson"
"Cat Lady" introduced me to Greyson this week.   Allow me to paw Greyson to you.

Greysen is a handsome and playful boy. He has wonderful kitten energy and Greysen's favorite activity is chasing his best friend, Aggie, up and down the stairs. He is a dedicated companion who will always greet you at the door when you come home.

Greyson is good with dogs, cats, and kids.  He is not declawed and has a short coat.

Adaptable and sweet, Greysen is healthy and up-to-date with his vetting. He tests negative for leukemia and FIV.

For more information on Greysen, please click here and fill out our online application, and we will contact you.

PetConnect Rescue has other cats and dogs available too.  Check them out on their website.

Friday's Friend - Ambassador Pit Bulls

"Daisy"
I've updated this post with the gorgeous pics of Daisy- take a look at her, isn't she pretty?  Ok, my human is telling me to get writing.....

I met a nice female dog this week at www.ambassadorpitbulls.org who is looking for a "Forever Home."

Are you looking for a companion who is a "go-getter", a happy-go-lucky kind of gal? Daisy would be the perfect dog for you! She is outgoing, people centered, willing to work, and very playful!

She showed no sensitivities to the body handling test, has no food or toy aggression (she stopped eating immediately and dropped her toy upon request). Her tail is constantly wagging, and she exhibits a nice level of play. Daisy also takes treats very gently.

She's intelligent, and already knows sit, down, shake, and is house and crate trained! Currently Daisy is being fostered with two other dogs, one pit bull and one toy poodle, and she does well with both. Making new friends is one of her favorite things to do, and she is more than happy to say "hi" and play with any dog that comes her way!

If you would like more information about Daisy, contact the Ambassador Pit Bulls.
"Daisy"
Thank you to Dirty Paws Photography for supplying images of Daisy!

Friday's Friend- Washington Humane Society

My friend "Miss Lauren" from the www.washhumane.org came by this week with a cat friend for me to introduce to you.  Yeah, the guys usually laugh at me with cats but I bark back and they settle.  Cats are important for pets too- I used to have a cat brother and he was really cool!

"Mellow"
Meet Mellow.  Mellow is his name, and relaxing is his game! Mellow came to the Washington Humane Society (WHS) on November 6, 2012 from a home on the 1000 block of Varnum Street, NE.

This handsome four-year-old orange boy who just loves to chill and be adored gets along well with other cats and has made a few feline friends during his stay with WHS. Take him home with a pal and pay only one adoption fee! Come visit Mellow at the Washington Humane Society’s Georgia Avenue Adoption Center today - 202-723-5730 / 7319 Georgia Avenue, NW.

Pet Bloggers Gift Exchange

Well, this is a first for me and I'm glad I decided to participate in Pamela from Something Wagging This Way Comes idea of a Pet Bloggers Gift Exchange.  The idea is to share a gift of encouragement, a kind note or anything positive as a gift.

Those who follow me on a regular basis know what a challenge for me this can be since my human is so fussy about where I surf to on the internet.  He should just get a doggie board and come along for the ride- ! ! !

"Me!"
Pamela matched me up with Sue who writes The Golden Life which is so cool. My human and I surfed and pawed over to her blog a few times over the past month or so and loved what we read.

Her style is like your reading a story of her life with three dogs.  She draws you into her writing.  Yes, I realize blogging is a less formal style of writing but some got it, some don't, Sam's got it.  I am impressed with her willingness to share posts for other bloggers.  Reading her blog is much like being right there in her life, or in her house while she's playing or working with her Goldens (Callie and Shadow) and her newest addition "Ducky" who happens to be a handsome dog and probably really smart- did I mention Ducky looks a lot like me- ??

Happy New Year and many "BARKS!" for much success with Ducky and your blog.

Friday's Friend

RUFF! RUFF!!  The first Friday of the new year and I've got a few Friends to introduce you too and a little fun to add into the mix.

"Schuyler"
My first visitor this week is from the Washington Humane Society.  My friend "Miss Lauren' brought by Schuyler (pronounced Skyler) who is wearing a Washington Redskins Jersey- they won the game and everyone is celebrating!

Are you in need a game day pal? Schuyler’s your girl! She's a one-year-old Whippet terrier mix with a heart of gold and burgundy, Schuyler may be a bit on the shy side with people, but with other dogs, she’s very outgoing. Schuyler came to WHS from the 1200 block of Raum Street NE on August 21, 2012. She would do best with a confident older dog for a big brother or sister. Got a quiet house for this little quarterback? Email her foster mom at AFeldt@washhumane.org.

The Washington Humane Society is hosting a fundraiser event on Jan. 31- will be telling you all about that in a few days-

Also, like photography, the Washington Humane Society is hosting a photo contest on their Facebook and Twitter pages. on Facebook, look near the bottom of page for information.

Thank you to the Washington Humane Society for supplying information and photography for today's "Friday's Friend."
