Halloween Safety Tips for Your Dog and Cat!

Woofs! Barkingly, Abby and Samson, one of our least favorite holidays is coming up on Sunday, October 31... Halloween!

Meows! Oh, hisses! I don't like this holiday. All the creepy things walking around and coming to the door, really annoy me!

I don't understand what you two are pawing about. It's only a day. It can't be as bad as the 4th of July, can it?

Barks, Abby, you are too young to know about Halloween.

Arf? Oh. Paws, why is it so annoying?

Meows, Mom and Dad do a great job taking care of the three of us during Halloween but some humans don't do it so we'll share these tips to encourage them.

Halloween Candy is for Mini-Humans, Not Your Pets
Paws, save the "trick-or-treat" candy for the mini-humans who stop by in their costumes. Most, if not all, candy, especially chocolates, are toxic to dogs and cats. Candy containing the sugar substitute, xylitol, can cause serious problems for your pets.

Keep the bowl of candy out of reach from your snooping pets. WOOFS! Our youngest puppy, Abby, is always getting into things so our humans will have to be creative.

BARKS! If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, please call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 immediately.

Costumes are for Mini-Humans, Not Your Pets, Unless...
Meows! Costumes are not fun for many pets, especially cats. Pawingly, I think they are funny on dogs too. Don't force your pet to wear a costume as they can cause undue stress for them. Pawlease don't put one on your pet unless you pawsitively know they don't mind it.

Paws, if you put a costume on your pet, pawlease make sure it doesn't hinder their ability to see, move, breathe, meow, or bark!

Meowingly, if you pawsitively must put a costume on your pet, pawlease introduce it to them ahead of time. Start by introducing the costume piece by piece allowing them to get used to it. Be sure there are no dangly things or pieces where your pet can chew and pawssibly choke. Offer praise and treats as the pet gets more comfortable with the costume. If your pet shows any signs of distress, pawlease do not force them to wear it; let them go au naturel or a festive bandana! Purrs!

Halloween Decorations, Carved Pumpkins, Electric or Battery Operated
Woofs! Carved pumpkins, candles, and electric or battery-operated decorations make Halloween fun and festive. Pawsly, be sure to pawlace these decorations out of reach of your pets. Cats like to explore, even high places, and puppies, like Abby, get into anything and everything! Barks. A wag of the tail or a paw reaching for a curious item like the candle in a pumpkin can lead to burns and start fires.

Battery-operated decorations can be less dangerous for your pets and just as festive. Barkingly, be sure to hide any loose wires and make sure the battery is securely tightened in the item.

Don't Leave Your Pets in the Backyard
Woofs! Abby and I love to play and run and do the zoomies in the backyard every day. Well, Abby does the zoomies, I'm a little older these days. Barks.

Pawlease bring your pets inside over Halloween as there are humans who kidnap dogs and cats to do things that are not mentionable in a family-oriented website like this. Black cats are especially targeted and sometimes black dogs! If you are unable to bring them inside, pawlease stay in the backyard to keep an eye on them. Barks, another alternative is crating in the garage with warm blankets, water, and treats is a safe way too.

Provide a Safe Room, Keep Pet Away from Front Door
Meows! I love my room! It provides me a safe pawlace to go when I get scared or just want a nap or want to escape the craziness of my human, Dad. On Halloween, my humans like to shut the door to the room so I am not disturbed by the mini-humans trick-or-treating.

Barkingly, Abby and I love our crates as they are our safe pawlaces too. We can go in and relax whenever we want or go out whenever we want to do so. Woofs.

Halloween night with the mini-humans dressed up in scary costumes can be stressful for your pets- even quite frightening. These characters can scare your pets enough for them to bolt out the front door quicker than you know! Paws, do your best to keep your pets securely away from the front door.

Keep Identification Tags, Collars, and Microchips Updated
WOOFS! As we like to paw and bark quite often, make sure your pet's identification tags, collar tags, and microchips are current. Have you moved recently? Have you adopted your pet recently? Make sure all identification is current.

Should your pet escape and go missing, pawlease contact your local animal shelter and neighbors letting them know about your pet.

Keep Glow Sticks Away
Barkingly, glow sticks which you often see mini-humans carrying when trick-or-treating are great ways to keep them safe and well seen by passersby including cars in the neighborhood.

Glow sticks are not poisonous to pets, however, the liquid inside can cause them to become agitated, drool, paw at their mouth and sometimes vomit. If your pet chews on one, offer fresh water and a small meal to clear the material out of their mouth!

Halloween Pawty?
Woofs, are you having a festive Halloween pawty at your house? Remember to keep all alcohol and nicotine products away from your pets. These products can be highly toxic causing illness or even be fatal.

And Finally!
Remember Halloween is supposed to be fun for everyone. Preparing your pet for the day will add to their fun and yours.

WOOFS! Barks! Happy Friday! I hope you have some pawsome plans for this rainy fall weekend coming up. If you had a dog, you could curl up and read a book together or watch movies or, like Dad and I, watch some railfan streaming on the TV and computer! Today, being so rainy, we'll watch that a lot and play with my indoor toys.

My pawsome friend "Lab Lady" from Lab Rescue brought by a beautiful 8-year-old Yellow Labrador Retriever named Addy who is looking for a "Forever Home!" with humans to love who will love her too! WOOFS! Pawlease note, it's not me Abby looking for a home, it's Addy. I'm not up for adoption, at least I don't think so... arf?

Addy is looking for a "Forever Home!" in a single-family home with a physical fence. She would like a yard so she can roll around in the grass like this!

Addy is sweet, playful and pawsomely quiet with barkingly grand house manner! No inappropriate chewing or barking!

Meows! Happy Friday my pawsome friends! It's been a busy week around our household. My humans went away last week to celebrate their 25th Wedding Anniversary so this week was full of catching up on what didn't get done last week. It was fun being a totally lazy cat watching Dad run around like a crazy guy. He's especially funny on his riding lawn mower! Meows.

Purrs, Denny can be very happy sitting on his human's lap when he's not playing with his buddies.

Meowsly, he loves chasing his toys and is one of the top champion zoomie athletes after finishing up a fine meal.

Happy Silver Wedding Anniversary Mom and Dad!

(C) 2021, from The Dog's Paw!
(C) 2021, from The Dog's Paw!

BARKS! WOOFS! MEOWS! Tonight at 8 p.m., probably closer to 8:15 or so, it will be twenty-five years since our humans exchanged wedding vows in 1996. Paws, we were just twinkles in their eyes back in those days but the dogs and cats they adopted throughout the years along with us have been quite blessed to be part of their lives.

Dad grew up with large breed dogs so he originally wanted to adopt a German Shepherd when he and his lovely bride decided to grow their family. However, at the time, they were living in a condominium and didn't think it was a good idea to raise a dog that size in a small place.

To Dad's surprise, somewhat kinda-sorta, Mom decided she wanted a cat. Not wanting to disappoint his sweetheart, he agreed. She knew of Dad's long-standing fear of cats and decided to try working within limits to getting the couple's first cat. Hence, an older quite handsome fella dutifully named, "Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in G Minor, Op. 125 in D Minor, "Choral," after Dad's favorite piece of classical music. He was called "Symphony" for short!

Not too long after that, the couple bought their first townhouse which was well-suited for having a dog. Dad was excited. Long story short, Mom was terrified of big dogs after having been bit by one as a child. After some friends learned they could not take their beloved pet with them when they moved overseas, they went to meet him. At first meet, the dog wrapped his paws around Mom's waist burying his head in her chest, as if to say "I love you! Take me home!" Thus, their first dog was adopted, "Ruffgang Amadeus Mozart" after one of Dad's favorite classical composers.

Meows! Purringly, several years later, another handsome beautiful Maine Coon cat was adopted which they named "Franz Joseph Haydn" because he was always "hidin'." After that, the passing of Mozart, led Mom to encourage Dad to adopt another dog which is when this rather really handsome incredibly good-looking fella named Noah, ME!, was adopted into the family.

After several years of being without a cat, due to caring for ill-parents, Mom decided it was time for another cat in the family. Meows! Mom found me, Samson, online with a rescue in Maryland. She and Dad drove two hours to visit me. I was so scared when they arrived as my entire life of three years had been turned upside down. Mom seemed like a pawsome woman, I really wasn't too sure about Dad. Paws, I got adopted by them and got the same "Samson" because of my large male Maine Coon cat size!

Our humans loved God with all their hearts, souls, and minds. They have loved each other through life's ups and downs and difficult human events. They have traveled the universe together having the time of their lives.

We BARK! and MEOW! a HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to a pawsomely grand couple who have shared their love with six furry kids over the years.

Noah's Houndisms! Barbeques, Smokers, and Grills Safety!

Photo by Joshua Kantarges on Unsplash
"Grilling Burgers!"
Photo by Joshua Kantarges on Unsplash

WOOFS! I love when my human grills! There is nothing like grilled or barbequed doggy bone at the end of a pawsome fall day! Woofs, filets of doggie treats, or sautéed veggies are the way to go! WOOF!

Barks, it'd be great if he actually made those treats for me and Abby and Samson too! Barkingly, they probably aren't healthy enough for us. Paws, the chicken, hamburgers, or steak he does grill is definitely delicious for humans - maybe we'll try to sneak a bite or two.

Woofs, when humans are grilling using propane, gas, pellets, smokers, and the like, the smell of the grilling food is a temptation to any dog that ever existed to pawssibly jump up and get into the food grilling. This could cause the dog to get burned, turn over the grill, and even start a fire! Barkingly, a turned-over grill, depending on the one used, can mean a huge spilled charcoal mess too. Or, even with propane grills like Dad uses, the stuff from the bottom of the unit may spill, creating a nasty mess or even start a fire.

Paws, on another thought, a dog roaming around the grilling equipment could cause humans to trip and fall into the grill. Falling into a grill can lead to severe burns on your body. Or, if we are lucky, Abby and I could just cause Dad to drop the steaks he's taking to the grill, and we get a pawsome dinner! Barks, seriously not good.

Barkings, keep your dog away from the grilling area on your deck or your yard. Dad keeps Abby inside when grilling since she is a young pup liking to get into everything.   I tend to stay inside with her though I am a senior dog and know better- it's good teaching for her! Barks.

Missy gets around pretty well! She is great with other dogs and loves to eat! She typically hangs out on the headrest of a recliner! She pawsitively loves being on her human's lap!

(C) 2021, from The Dog's Paw!

Woofingly, Missy isn't much of a fan of her crate! She does well in it but she'll cry for a minute or two before she settles in for her nap.

MEOWS! A meowy Friday to you! When my human worked in an office before he retired, he used to have a pep in his step and be very cheery every Friday. He was looking forward to more time with Noah and I! Meows, now he's around all the time and I can't seem to get rid of him for anything- he'll only take the dogs on so many walks! Meow.

(C) 2021, from The Dog's Paw!
Are you looking for a fine feline friend to keep you company not only on the weekends but every day? My friend "Miss Kim" from the Homeless Animals Rescue Team (HART) brought by a handsome fella named Casey who is looking for his "Forever Home!" with humans to love who will love him too! Meows.

Paws, Casey is around 2-years-old. He is not declawed, has no known experience with dogs and is cat-friendly. He is recommended for mini-humans ages 10 and older.

Casey is a classic orange lover-boy! Hiss! He was living in a local storm drain when a sweet human starting putting out food for strays. Purrs, he liked that! When she noticed him, he turned on his sweetness charm trying to win her over, purringly, rubbing her legs and flopping over for lovin's! She contacted HART who had him neutered and vaccinated. Purrings, he was brought into a foster home and he's become a total love bug. Meows!

Pawingly, he is FIV+ from the days defending himself outside. He is looking forward to the days of enjoying the indoor good life of being spoiled by pawsome humans! Are you looking for a lap cat? He's where it's at! MEOWS!

WOOF! WOOF! I hope you have had a pawsome week and are headed into some great plans for the weekend. Are you thinking about adding a dog to your family? One that will be a great companion on the upcoming cold days?

My pawsome friend "Miss Meg" from my rescue the "Homeless Animals Rescue Team (HART)" stopped by week with a barkingly grand dog named Lacie who is looking for her "Forever Home!" with humans to love who will love her too!

(C) 2021, from The Dog's Paw!
Lacie is a Shepherd mix, around 3-years-old, is friendly with other dogs but her experience with cats in unknown. She is mini-human friendly too.

Barkingly, Lacie is a complete house dog. Paws, she loves to stare out the windows but she actually doesn't want to go outside. Paws, her foster Dad says, "I have to nearly bribe her to go outside to do her business!" Woofs! She runs to the nearest grassy spot outside, creates her "gifts" or whatever for society, runs quickly back up the stairs, and waits to go back inside!

Woofs, Lacie is a pawsomely grand pawleasure indoors. She's very quiet and willing to go inside her crate or bed to sleep at night. She is very crate-friendly. Her foster mom crates her when going out. She was crated for several hours and did well.

Barks, she enjoys a game of catch, indoors, when allowed.

Paws, for a family, she will make a great pet as she listens and learns very well. She's a pretty big dog and will jump up to greet humans. Barkingly, when told no, she will settle within a few days. She likes to lay and sleep on the foster's couch and guest beds. When the foster found out, she was told "no" and quit doing it. She knows furniture and guest rooms are off-limits.

If you have questions about sweet Lacie, contact Meg.
