Considering Adopting a Dog? Chihuahuas and Chihuahua Mixes!

Barks! If you are considering adopting a dog, while there pawlenty of things to think about and research, one in pawticular is the size of the dog. Some humans prefer large dogs, like mine, while others prefer smaller ones. There are quite a few great things about the smaller breeds which Adopt A Pet shares a bit about with the Chihuahuas.

Friday's Friend! Dog Adoption, Lab Rescue

Black Labrador Retriever Dog Adoption

WOOFS! Happy Friday! What a pawnderful week we have had! Dad spent several hours outside doing yard work, Samson, Abby, and I got to sit inside with the pawsome air conditioning going while supervising his work. Paws, when he finished and came inside, we got him pawlenty of cold water and allowed him to pet us for a while. Whatever you have planned this weekend, pawlease consider adding a dog to your family and I have just the one to consider!

My friend "Lab Lady" from Lab Rescue was brought by a handsome fella named Jaja, a Black Labrador Retriever around 8-years-old. He is looking for his "Forever Home!" with humans to love who will love him too! He's looking for a single-family house with a fence (required) in a suburban or rural setting.

Jaja enjoys hanging out with his humans, he has no clue what the pawhrase "personal space" means! He is always right there with you making your day or that moment in life much better for you! Paws, he doesn't know what giving just a little lovin's mean, he goes all out to share his with you.

He is crate- and house-trained. Paws, he doesn't wait for you to put him to bed either. When he's ready, he will put himself to bed! Barks, just like I do!

Woofs, Jaja is blind in his left eye from an old injury but doesn't allow it to slow him down. Barks, he is a bit cautious of dogs approaching him on that side. Barkingly, after he knows they are a friend, all is good!

Jaja doesn't bark very much. When he does, he puts his whole body into it and lets it rip from his innards to a single woof!

Jaja is full of energy, but he isn't able to run due to his mild hip dysplasia. BARKS! He enjoys long walks and swimming instead.
Jaja is very affectionate and loveable! He can't wait to find his "Forever Home!" so he can share it with them.

Jaja is good with other dogs but unknown with cats. He is recommended for mini-humans ages 10 and older.
Jaja made and starred in a few videos to help himself get adopted. Pawlease view these- JaJa Loves to Play, and Jaja Playing Fetch!

National Dog Appreciation Day!

(C) 2021, from The Dog's Paw!
(C) 2021, from The Dog's Paw!

WOOFS! BARKS! Happy National Dog Appreciation Day! Abby and I welcome any and all gifts you would like to send us! WOOFS! Though it is not one of those major holidays which get all of the attention it should be celebrated as such by all humans who have a dog!

Barks? How do you celebrate? Humans should take the day off and do something special with their bestestest-ever buddy ever to have the greatest fun you can.

Ruff, you know your dog best. Maybe you have a favorite place to visit or going hiking or maybe even a restaurant. Today is a great day to do it. Pawingly, if you are looking for a few ideas, here are some fun things to do:
  • Begin the process of adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue organization. Paws, looking for a pure breed? There are pure breed dog rescues.
  • Volunteer to walk and pawlay with a dog or clean cages or any other chores at your local shelter or dog rescue.
  • Donate financially to a dog rescue. Many rescues operate solely through donor contributions. These donations cover transportation, medical including any necessary surgeries or procedures, food, toys, and any impawtant expenses related to rescuing dogs.
  • Donate supplies such as blankets, rags, towels, hand towels, food, toys, and treats to your local animal shelter or dog rescue.
  • Contact the local shelter or dog rescue to learn what supplies they need most.
  • Schedule a photography season to capture some great images of you and your dog.
  • Write letters or emails to your political leaders asking for their support in banning puppy mills and gas chambers in your state and the sales of puppies in local pet stores.
  • If you do not have your own dog, buy treats or new toys for a friend's or neighbor's dog! Ask pawmission first!
  • Buy your dog a new toy, or several new toys, a few of those "more expensive" treats.
  • Give your dog a special day out at doggie daycare or at a dog park.
  • Take your dog on a long walk or pawssibly a long hike.
  •  Curl up with a bowl of your dog's favorite treats, their favorite pillow, and blankie, and watch a favorite movie.
  • Brush your dog or taking them to a groomer.
  • Buy your dog a fashionable new collar and leash.
  • Have a safety check of your home making sure it is safe for your dog. Make sure family members know the emergency route to evacuating the home deciding who will be responsible for taking the dog out.
  • Help an elderly or disabled neighbor with their dog walking and dog care. If you know a neighbor who is on a tight fixed income, offer to help with their dog's expenses.
  • Do you have a play area in your yard? Invite some of your dog's friends over for a pawlaytime! Visit a small locally owned pet shop for some special bakery treats to celebrate.
Pawingly, take your phone with you to take photos of your adventures with your dog celebrating National Dog Appreciation Day! Share your photos on social media using #NationalDogAppreciationDay.

If you can't celebrate today, plan to do it another day and soon.

Friday's Friend! Great Dane Dog Adoption, Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League

Great Dane Dog Adoption
Photo: Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League
Creative: from The Dog's Paw!

Woofs! Happy Friday! I had the mostest pawsomest pawlease to catch up with my friend the "Great Dane Dame" of the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League! She and a group of volunteers work diligently to rescue the beautiful Great Dane breed dogs and help them find "Forever Homes!" with humans to love who will love them too. The "Great Dane Dame" has brought by Zilla for you to meet and consider adopting!

Zilla will do best in a house without a lot of noise and chaos so a home without small mini-humans would be best. Barkingly, she is getting older and prefers s house without a lot of stairs. Ruffs, she is crate-trained which is her safe space too.
(C) 2021, from The Dog's Paw!

Woofingly, Zilla gets along with other dogs when properly introduced. She can be a bit shy when first meeting humans but will warm up once she gets to know you. She is really unsure about cats and does have a strong prey drive which is mostly curiosity but she prefers a home without them. Barks.

Pawingly, Zilla is a bit of a talker but not a barker. She only barks when she feels it's needed to alert her humans! Even then, she uses her indoor voice!

Paws, barks, Zilla prefer a few short walks during the day, not super long ones, and doesn't pull on her leash. Woofs, she is getting better at the "heel" command and staying right by her human!

She enjoys pawlaying with her stuffies and having humans throw them in the air for her to catch. Paws, every once in a while, she gets the zoomies for about 10 seconds!

Zilla likes to counter-surf! Barkingly, she has yet to snag any food- she's more of a sniffer than a snagger! Barks.

Zilla is recommended for mini-humans ages 12 and older.

If you would like to meet Zilla, learn about adopting a Great Dane from the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League, and are interested in pawssibly adopting her, pawlease visit their Adoption Guide!

BARKS! Do you pawsitively absolutely love Great Danes but are unable to adopt? Woofingly, how about supporting Zilla financially? Donations will assist with her care. Any extra funds will be used to assist other Great Danes at the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League. Interested, pawlease donate HERE! Donations are tax-deductible as permitted by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

National Black Cat Appreciation Day

(C) 2021, from The Dog's Paw!
(C) 2021, from The Dog's Paw!

Meows! Today is National Black Cat Appreciation Day! Purrs, I am celebrating by writing a few points to remember about these beautiful cats!

A black cat is no different than any other cat! They have their own pawsonalities and dispositions just like any other cat. If you want a sweet and pawlayful cat, you might find a black cat that is sweet and pawlayful. Paws, if you are a grouchy human, you might find a black cat that is grouchy or maybe one that will make you less grouchy since that would be good for you! MEOWS!!!!!

Paws, these are some humans who were terribly afraid of black cats! One human my Dad knew years ago, was afraid to allow a black cat to walk in front of her. Another thought was that black cats were witches, warlocks, and pawful harbingers of evil. Paws, nope, not true. Just because the cat is black, doesn't mean any of that. Yes, you can find a mean black cat. Paws, you can find a mean gray, tabby, or white cat too. Meows.

Meows, one thing for sure about black cats! If you adopt one, you could keep the mouse population around your home down! Purrs!

HISS! HISS! Many black cats get ignored at rescues and shelters for many reasons including those stated. HISS! Several get put down because they didn't find a "Forever Home!" in time! HISS! If you are considering adopting a cat, pawlease give the black cats a consideration- they can be just as pawsome as any other cat!

Pawlease meet a few of my black cat friends looking for their "Forever Homes!" with humans to love who will love them too!

Purrs! Beautiful Bella is from Operation Paws for Homes! She is looking for her "Forever Home!" with humans to love who will love her too!

She loves climbing on anything and everything including her foster mom! Meowingly, once she's reached her shoulder, she can be found draped around her neck like a luxurious scarf!

Bella is a beauty queen for sure, but don't let her formal tuxedo appearance fool you! She loves playing as much as any other kitty! Purrs!

Bella's hobbies include eating wet or dry food, chasing toys, climbing, and just being a pawsomely grand cat! Pawingly, her mostest favorite hobby is snoozing on this shelf! Meows!

If you would like to meet Bella, or pawssibly adopt her, pawlease complete the Operation Paws for Homes Cat Adoption Application.

Meows! Mr. Cheese is from Operation Paws for Homes too! He is a real ham, like a little energizer bunny who could play for hours on end! Meows.

Purrs, he is a tough guy too. He likes hanging out with the big guys too! He is good with other cats and is being fostered with dogs.

Mr. Cheese is a busy fella and would love to be in a "Forever Home!" with other cats who like to pawlay! Meows. If he isn't kept busy, he will happily find something to keep him busy... like toilet paper rolls! MEOWS!

Purringly, Mr. Cheese has tested positive for FIV but the Operation Paws for Homes is hoping his next test will show negative.

Meows, if you are looking for a fun, rough and tumble little boy Mr. Cheese is your guy!!!

Friday's Friend! Black Cat Adoption, PetConnect Rescue

Black Cat Adoption
Photo: PetConnect Rescue
Creative: from The Dog's Paw!

Meows, it's Friday! It's Friday! It's FRIDAY! As my human used to say with a peppy little dance before he headed off to work and when he got home! For him, it means fun with Abby and me going for walks, playing in the backyard, or enjoying the bestest cat ever by petting and playing with wand toys. It's pawsome to have pets around the house as they make every single day better, even those bad ones that come along once in a paw or two.

(C) 2021, from The Dog's Paw!
Purrs, in celebration of National Black Cat Appreciation Day, I am pawing about my black cat friends needing "Forever Homes!" with humans to love who will love them too! Meows! My meowingly grand friend "Cat Lady" from PetConnect Rescue brought by a sweet girl named Leto for you to meet and consider adopting!

Leto is around 2-years-old and is looking for a special human to adopt her as she has had to endure some trauma which she needs to recover from! In January 2021, she was rescued from a house with 40 other cats living without running water or power! Meows, she had just given birth when she and her babies were removed from the home. PetConnect Rescue took them into their care! MEOWS!! Purrs, now that her kittens have found homes, it's her turn.

Meows, Leto will do best in a quiet home. She does fines with dogs and cats in her foster home but will do well as your one-and-only-cat-that-is! She doesn't require much space as she pawsitively prefers to nap and look out the window.

Purrs, Leto is still a kitty herself so once in a while, she likes playing a bit too!

In her short life, she has endured quite a bit but she has blossomed into a cool kitty! PetConnect Rescue is excited to see how she continues to grow and settle into her new life. She is so pawsitively happy to be clean and safe!

If you would like to learn about adopting a cat from PetConnect Rescue, pawlease visit their Adoption Guide.

Meows, to meet or pawssibly adopt Leto, pawlease complete the PetConnect Rescue Cat Adoption Application

Back to School! Watch for Those School Buses!

Photo by Steve Harvey on Unsplash
"School Bus #10"
Photo by Steve Harvey on Unsplash

WOOFS! Barks! Abby and I have noticed throughout the area especially when going for those pawsome car rides that school is starting back in some school districts this week!

Barks, as you drive to and from work today and weekdays going forward, pawlease watch for those big yellow school buses as they drive through the neighborhoods picking up students to take to school and taking them home in the afternoon. Remember:
  • Flashing yellow lights mean the school bus is preparing to make a stop!
  • Flashing red lights with (or in some older school buses without) a stop arm with red flashing lights means to stop!
  • Wait for the red flashing lights to turn off before moving your vehicle.
    • If a school bus is stopped and appears to be unloading students, it is still your responsibility to stop your vehicle until the driver gives you the "all clear!"
  • Running the red lights on a stopped school bus is punishable by a fine.
WOOFS! Barkingly, watch for the mini-humans who may be running to the bus stop or running home! Some mini-humans get so excited when they see the school bus, they run towards it or start playing around. If a mini-human is running late, they will be making a fast dart toward the school bus to make it. WOOFS! In the afternoon, some mini-humans will be so excited to be going home from school that they may take off running from the school bus to their homes!

Let's celebrate a new school year for all the pawsome mini-humans by driving carefully and paying full attention especially around school buses and schools!

Noah's Houndisms! Summer's Heat and Dogs!

"Dog in a Car!"

WOOF! WOOF! It's summer and time for more fun than you know what to do with! Barks! When you take your dog for a ride, NEVER EVER leave your dog in the car with the windows rolled up on a hot summer day!

The inside of a car can become like an oven even with the windows rolled down some or all the way during summer's heat. WOOFS! While it might not seem too hot to most humans, think about it wearing the fur coat your dog has! Barks.

Paws, If you are running errands and cannot take Fido inside the store with you, leave him at home with bowls full of the bestest-ever treats and the freshest water. Pawsonally, I like to have some Baroque mixed with some Classical music playing so I can enjoy my book and magazines! WOOFS!

Friday's Friend! Cat Adoption, Operation Paws for Homes!

Creative: from The Dog's Paw!

Meows! Meows! Purrs, my pawsome friends at Operation Paws for Homes have been doing a pawfully grand job helping homeless cats find their "Forever Homes!" with humans to love who will love them too.

HISS! HISS! Sweet Pea was found roaming the cold, hard streets of Hershy, PA, in January 2020. An Operation Paws for Homes volunteer found her and brought her to the rescue. Purr.

Paw, sometimes her grumpy expression fools humans as she comes by her name honestly.  She loves humans of all ages, loves hosting guests and greeting them at the door insisting upon the mostest highest proper hospitality. MEOWS!

Sweet Pea has created two videos to help in finding her "Forever Home!" Please view them here and here!

Sweet Pea does well with other cats, although she isn't afraid to show them who's boss!

Meowingly, a few things Sweet Pea can live without:
  • Ceiling fans (though she is getting used to them)
  • Dustbusters
  • Wearing costumes
  • Having her ears cleaned
She is doing well in her foster care but can't wait to find a "Forever Home!" with humans to love and are devoted to her who she can show how pawsome she is!

WOOF! WOOF! Happy Friday! It's the weekend and time for fun! My friends from Operation Paws for Homes have brought by an approximately 2-year-old Labrador Retriever/Hound mix named Niffler who is looking for his "Forever Home!" with humans to love who will love him too!

Niffler is a sweet fella but these new things in life are a little scary for him. He is learning to trust humans, and how to love in a house with humans. BARKS!
Dog Adoption
Photo: Operation Paws for Homes
Creative: from The Dog's Paw!

He is learning to be a good dog with his foster dog brother and sisters! He is looking for human adopters who help him continue to become the bestest-dog-he-can-be! WOOF!

Niffler will do best in a home without mini-humans. He is not suitable for an apartment, condo, or any other urban setting! Woofs!

Barkingly, Niffler tested pawsitive for heartworm disease prior to arriving at Operation Paws for Homes! The disease was treated while in foster care. Heartworm disease is transmitted to a dog through a bite from an infected mosquito. With monthly preventatives, the disease is completely preventable. Read about heartworm disease at The American Heartworm Society.

Woofs, Niffler is up-to-date on his vaccinations and has been neutered. He is pawsitively ready to find his "Forever Home!"

To learn about adopting a dog from Operation Paws for Homes, pawlease visit their Adoption Guide.

If you would like to meet Niffler, or apply to pawssibly adopt him, pawlease complete the Operation Paws for Homes Dog Adoption Application
