Rescued Dog Survives Rattlesnake Bite and Saves Girl!

The greatness of us dogs is only surpassed by, uh, well, how great we actually are- which is really nothing new....sometimes it can just take humans a little while to catch onto this- WOOF!!!!

As I love to paw about dog adoption, I love to share about the greatness of having one around.

A news story in a dog magazine and a newspaper shares about a dog saving the lives of his family, even after being bitten by a rattle snake.  Here is a link to the story- Rattlesnake and Dog.

About a two years ago, I wrote a post about safety for dogs and snakes.  With the Spring season here and Summer fast approaching, it's worth re-reading, "Rattlesnakes, Snakes and Dogs."

"Bella"
(C) Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League
WOOF!!! BARK!!! Smiles!  Happy Friday!  Around here, Friday's have changed some- my human retired from his full time work and now works on his writing and photography business.  He usually isn't finished working until sometime on Saturday.  Of course, there are many great opportunities for Dad and I to do things together during the week. He says I make his retirement awesome!  And, of course, I agree!

My friend from the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League has brought her friend Bella back for you to meet!  She is looking for a "Forever Home" again though no fault of her own!

Bella is looking for a "Forever Home" with a fenced yard and a doggie buddy playmate.

A high energy dog, she loves to run around with another dog then stop and cuddle with a human. She loves car rides, drinking lots of water, and playing with toys! She loves to throw them in the air and catch them!! WOOF!!

Bella's manners are improving and she knows most basic cues.  She is very food motivated and wants to please her humans.   She will benefit from a training course and a dog savvy home.

Bella is a most beautiful 16 month old Great Dane/Labrador Retriever mix.  She is the size of a Great Dane, around 120 lbs. and has an energy and personality of a Labrador Retriever!  WOOF!! What a pawfect mix!

Though Bella is dog friendly, she does play rough, the other dog in home needs to be barkingly good with that!

A pawsome young girl, Bella would love to find a forever home and family that she never has to leave again!!

If you would like to meet Bella and learn about dog adoption, please visit Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League.

Friday's Friend! Dog Adoption, Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc.

The weather forecast is calling for quite a bit of rain tomorrow- no matter, my human and I will spend the day having fun together.  When the clouds break, we'll go for a walk.  When it's raining, we play fetch in the family room- no it's not that big of a room -we just know how to do it in a small area.  And, we'll curl up on the couch watching the rain or some show on TV.  Everyday is perfect with a dog in your life!  WOOF!!!! I should know.

My friend, "Lab Lady" should have the most perfect of days every day because she is always surrounded by dogs!  Who could ask for more....?!    This week, she brought by a big 9 year-old Black Labrador Retriever named Blue!

"Blue"
(C) Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc.
Blue is one handsome dude with the shiny black fur of his- he's almost as handsome as me- WOOF!!!!  We black Labradors got it!!

Blue is extremely sweet and affectionate.  He thinks he's a lap dog and loves to cuddle with humans!  He loves to be near his humans.

A smart guy, Blue knows basic commands like "sit," "stay," "down," and "come." He is crate and house broken.

Blue is a very quiet gentleman.  He's not made a sound while staying with his foster humans!

Blue is looking for a home with other dogs so they can have some ful playing and windows so he can sit and watch the world go by when the humans aren't at home.

Blue has pawsitively mastered leash skills- he is second to none!  He doesn't pull but does like to take his time smelling the smells and saying hello to everyone he meets, human and canine!!

My friend Blue is easy to care for, calm, laid back, and a very special guy who will make a pawfect addition to your family.  Though low key, he loves to be part of the action!

See Blue on YouTube: Blue!

His foster humans discovered Blue is good with cats. No kid history so approved for kids 10 and up.  He is up to date on vaccinations.

A Seat Belt for Me?

We all need remonbers- especially humans- we dogs, got it down pawfect!  I am repawblishing a story I shared several years ago as it relates to the upcoming season!

One of the things that I paw about the spring and summer months is more time outside with my human! He loves to be outside and I get to follow him!! Not only do we play fetch and take longer walks but we go for car rides. I paw these trips. Dad says he bought his car with me in mind and I love it!
"Dad and I"
(C) TGR Pottery and Photography, Used by Permission

We roll the windows down just enough for me to sniff, open the moon roof, turn the music up loud and head out!! Out the driveway- down the street to the main road we go. I stick my head out the window- then out the moon roof- this is great!!!!!

Suddenly, Dad hits the brakes and I fall in the floor. Ouch! Not fun. I climb back onto the seat. Oh good…..not an accident. Someone pulled in front of us and slammed on their brakes. Now Dad’s worried about me- we pull off the road to a safe place, he gets out and checks me for injuries while fussing muttering about “how many times do I have to say ‘sit!’ while in the car!?? I’m Ok- just startled. We head on our way and enjoy the rest of our trip.

We get home and my humans check me over really good. Guess the jolt in the car startled him more than I realize. I need to pay more attention to staying seated in the car, I guess.

Mom suggests some kind of doohickey thingy that would keep me seated in the car. Dad agrees but isn’t sure what to get.

Dad heads up to his studio to work on his photography and writing for awhile. I go up with him and lay down on my pillow, thinking about the crazy ride and how dangerous that driver was! Dad keeps working but I drift off to asleep. I awaken and hear Mom mentioning a new harness. Oh no… not a harness! Dad begins exploring on the internet and finds a few things to show Mom.

Mom mentions to Dad about the statistics she read in an article written by the American Automobile Association (AAA) which stated that a dog without a harness becomes a flying object in an accident that could seriously hurt you, someone else or itself, the dog could get scared and take off running somewhere, the dog could bite someone and could prohibit the emergency people from helping the injured. Also, you should never let the dog ride in the front, even with a seatbelt or harness because it could go out the windshield in an accident. AAA recommends putting a harness or seat beat (made for the dog) on your dog whenever you go anywhere in the vehicle. Good grief, that takes all the fun out of a dog’s ride in the car!

Well, they got me one. I feel and look silly. Dad took me for a ride again and I quickly noticed that it isn’t so bad after all. Dad had to stop quickly and I didn’t go falling into the floor. However, it does keep me from being able to get up to the front seat. DRAT!!!

Friday's Friend! Dog Adoption, Operation Paws for Homes

WOOF!! Happy Friday!!  I opened my door and in came 4 puppies from Operation Paws for Homes!  So pawsitively cool!!

(C) Operation Paws for Homes
These 4 dogs are looking for humans to love and "Forever Homes!"

A short introduction to these pups-

Maxton- A 1-year old Hound mix with a cool happy-go-lucky nature!  He is a little shy at first, but warms up quickly to humans and dogs. Cats? The Hound instinct take over so he wouldn't be a good fit for a home with felines. He would make a great addition to a family who loves to play and will continue his training.

Kalei- A 1 year old, female, Labrador Retriever/terrier mix.  She loves to go for walks or running or playing with other dogs and the humans in her life. She had FHO surgery on her rear leg the beginning of January, but has recovered great!  She loves to give kisses to her humans.  She is still a puppy  and will need someone with patience to continue her training to become the best pet possible for your home. She loves meeting new humans and dogs though should would do best in a home without tiny dogs or cats.

Miss Jess- An elegant, tall, and true southern lady lovely.  She is a 1.5 year old,  medium-size, adult, Hound mix.  She is calm and well-mannered. A warm, soft, dog bed, and loving lap to lay her head are her dreams of a pawfect home. She enjoys watching the football game, going for walks or hikes.  Hounds are intelligent (Ahem, Cough, Cough, Ahem!), loving, and enjoy the company of humans. Miss Jess gets along great with other dogs and humans.

Naveen-  A 2-year old, 32 lbs., female Labrador Retriever who comes from a rural area of Virginia. She is learning and trying to understand humans.  She gets along with other dogs.  One of her favorite things is peanut butter and loves licking off a humans finger.  She is very quiet and well mannered. She is crate trained but doesn't like the small ones. She needs humans to take it slowly when meeting her so she's not scared. She is learning to get along with other dogs.

If you would like to meet any of these dogs, please complete the Operation Paws for Homes Adoption Application.

If you would like to learn about dog adoption, please visit the Operation Paws for Homes Adoption Guide.

Friday's Friend! Dog Adoption, Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc.

WOOF!! Happy Friday!! I paw you have a great weekend planned.  My human is looking forward to seeing the sun shine this weekend- and, getting out to do some photography and yard work.

I have had a pawsome opportunity to meet a lady named Molly from the Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc.  She is female 11 year old, 61 lbs., Black Labrador Retriever!

"Molly"
(C) Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc.
Molly is looking for a "Forever Home" in a single family home with a quiet setting or in a rural area.  She's had no exposure to big cities and it's noise.  WOOF!!!!

Molly likes playing fetch with a ball and bringing it back, but, is still learning to
drop it! WOOF!!!! She loves to chew on marrow bones and chew toys. Barkingly, she just loves to go for rides in the car! Whenever her foster humans go outside, Molly heads straight for the car!  WOOF!!!  She enjoys going for leisure walks too!

A cuddler, a lover and a lap dog, all rolled into one dog are traits that best describe Molly!  And, pawsomely, the lovin's she will give you in return a pawvelous beyond any barks of the imagination!!

Molly enjoys sleeping on her dog bed or your bed- wherever- she is happy.  She
is crate and house trained but has the run of her fosters home!  BARK!!!

A very special treat for her humans, when you walk in the door, Molly always greets you with something in her mouth, pawsibly a bone, a ball or just a piece of paper!

This beautiful lady has learned to talk as well- Molly knows how to let you know when she wants to play or wants her food!

Molly went to an adoption event a few days ago and had a video made so you can see her,  Molly!

Molly is recommended for mini-humans over the age of 10.  She is good with other dogs and has no cat history.

Molly is up to date on vaccines. She is heart worm positive, because of her age her treatment will be a Ivermectin based Heartworm Preventatives (Heartgard, Iverhart, Tri Heart) every month.

Friday's Friend! Dog Adoption and Cat Adoption Celebrates 550th Post!

In 2011, I started my blog to paw about my life with my human.  Soon after, I added a column, "Friday's Friend" to help dogs and cats in the Northern Virginia- Maryland area find humans and their "Forever Homes!"

Why do I paw this each week?  I'm a big dog rescued by PetConnect Rescue and Pilot's N Paws brought to Maryland and found my humans and "Forever Home" in Virginia.

Barkingly pawsome, my human would like to have another big dog or two in our home but it would be too much.  So, to help all dogs and cats, I started writing.

Cats? Yes, Mom loves cats, so I write about them for her!  WOOF!!!!

We celebrate with this post by acknowledging the love these rescues have shown in caring for dogs and cats:

PAWS TO YOU!

Dogs Are Great for Your Health!

My human started walking me as soon as I can home with him.  Since then, we've walked nearly everyday give or take a few snowstorms, polar vortexes, and thunderstorms along the way.

He isn't much for taking medications so whenever his physical comes up and there's something he needs to work on, he discusses with his doctor suggestions exercising with me to help reach the goals.  His doctor being a sports medicine doctor helps considerably.

I am proud to say we have managed to lower his blood pressure, lower his sugar levels and help him become more fit overall!  WOOF!!!!!

A Paw: I highly paw that you speak to your doctor about any exercise program you are interested in starting including with a dog.

"Rain! Rain! Go away! Come again another day!" - just not the next few days! WOOF! WOOF!!! BARK!  I've heard my human say that poem more than a few times these past few days.  But, then, he'll say, "its good for the flowers and plants- and, before I know it we'll be wanting it to rain! BUT GO AWAY FOR NOW!"

My human have been taking our walks around the rain deluges and showers which hasn't been to bad- not gotten soaked yet and it is fun.  Between us, I like to take it slower when it rains so I can soak my human! BARK!!

Barkingly, this type of weather would be enjoyed by my friend Harry who was brought by on a boat going south by my friend "Lab Lady" from Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc..

"Harry"
(C) Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc.
Harry is an 80 lbs., 8 year-old Yellow Labrador Retriever who is looking for a "Forever Home!" He is a former dock dog competitor so it would be great if his new home would had some water to play in! WOOF!

Harry is the shadow dog kinda guy and will roll over for humans to give humans to give him belly rubs. WOOF!!!! Bark!!

Harry is excellent in the car, loving to go places with his human. He does great on a leash and is learning not to counter surf. arf? He is learning with his foster what it's like to live with humans! He's content to sleep on the bed but isn't much for cuddling!

For an 8 year-old, uh- what are they trying to say, he has incredible stamina on walks and the stairs which were probably from his 5 years as a dock dog competitor and still loves to swim!

Harry has always gotten along with other dogs. He's a hit in doggie day care. He submissive around other dogs. He never really had a prey drive so he isn't into chasing squirrels or deer.

Harry is allergic to to cats. He's good around mini-humans but has never lived with any, so he's approved for ages 10 and up.

Currently, Harry suffers from allergies and has an acute skin infection. He's responding well to the treatment which includes antibiotics and medicated baths once a week.

Friday's Friend! Dog Adoption, Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League

WOOF!! BARK!!! Oh. My.  This guy is a huge dog!  And, a playfully pawsome barkingly grand huge dog.  I feel very small all of a sudden.  arf.

My friends from the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League brought by a handsome Blue Great Dane for you to meet!  Blue Danes have been described as art in motion!

Meet Zeus!!

"Zeus"
(C) Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League
Zeus is 5 years old and came to the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League when his humans were moving overseas and could not take him along.  So, he is looking for new humans and a "Forever Home" to share his pawsome pawnderful self with!

I had a pawsome blast meeting Zeus as he's one big sweet goofy guy who loves nothing better than a lot of attention!
"Zeus"
(C) Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League

Though Zeus has not lived with other dogs before, he does enjoy playing socially with them!  He is a "BIG" player so a smaller or timid dog might not appreciate his enthusiam or excitement!!

Zeus doesn't act his age!!  He has the pawsome energy of a 2 year old and would like to have a buddy that must be great with his energy level!

Zeus shows way too much interest in cats and likes to chase them, so he needs to go to a home with no cats! BARK!! BARK!!!

In his previous home, Zeus lived with a toddler who adored him so he is very child friendly.

Please remember he is very energetic and BIG thus kids, tables, breakables are all “tale height”. Zeus has many more fun, active years to provide his "Forever Home."

Interested in meeting this great guy?  Dog adoption information about Zeus can be found at Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League

Friday's Friend! Dog Adoption, PetConnect Rescue

My friend "Big Bruno" has been pawfully busy these days taking care of some really cool dogs!  This week, he brought by another guy for you to meet- Scotty!

"Scotty"
(C) PetConnect Rescue
Scotty is a very special, really cool, sensitive male Stafforshire mix asking for a chance!

Scotty is a loyal, loving and affectionate guy who can sometimes come across as awkward- much like a young teenager meeting other humans -though doubt he's that age yet- Despite his dashing handsome good looks and pawsomely grand pawsonality, Scotty finds it awkward to meet new humans!

"Scotty"
(C) PetConnect Rescue
From what Big Bruno tells me, Scotty is a casanova with the ladies immediately, it's the guys he takes a minute or so to warm up to! WOOF!!!! Big Bruno says "Believe me, he has as many male friends as he does female, matter of fact, his best friends are all guys! I get where Scotty is coming from, I'm a shy person too, thank goodness I'm not homeless because of it."

Scotty has some pawsome qualities that make him a barkingly grand dog to have your home and to pal around with-  he's crate trained, potty trained, leash trained, obedient, comes when called, kiss monster, professional snuggler, quiet, fun, fetches, marathon napper, best friend ever! Pawcellent!! WOOF!!!!!

Scotty has a huge fan club and is hugely loved by his foster family but he needs to find some humans of his own!

Scotty would love to have a "Forever Home" with a fenced in yard so continue run and play to his heart's delight!

Scotty has done well with well mannered, playful dogs and has ignored his foster's cat!

Scotty is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines and preventatives and eager to find a family to love!

Interested in meeting Scotty?  Please complete the PetConnect Rescue Adoption Application.  Once submitted, please email Tammy at tmathis@petconnectrescue.org.
