Halloween! Tips for your Dog and Cat!

"Halloween Pumpkins!"

WOOF!  WOOF! RUFF! ARF! BARK! BARK! HISS! HISS! Meow! Arfs? G-R-R-R-R-R-R-R  HALLOWEEN? Not our favorite time of year! Samson and I dread this day second only to the 4th of July with all it's fireworks and bright lights. Our cat cousins Max and Zoey do not like it either.

WOOF! I have not liked Halloween night since my human opened the front door several years ago and I saw all these frightening monsters staring at me and yelling “trick or treat!”  I started barking and really wanted to pee on them but my human restrained me. Arf.

My humans weren’t prepared for that night as they didn’t know it could be a very frightening experience for dogs as we weren’t expecting monsters on our territory- to paws the least. A few tips to keep in mind-
"Cat in the Shadows"
Photo by Sašo Tušar on Unsplash

Of utmost inpawtance are your pet’s ID.  Are the microchip and ID collar up to date with important information? Does your pet know their emergency human contact? WOOF! My Uncle Ed and Miss Glenda are my bestest buddies! Don’t tell Dad!

Keep a very close eye on your dog and cat, especially if they are black, on the days leading up to Halloween, including the day and night and the days after.  BARKS!! WOOFs!  There are mean humans who will tease, hurt, injure, steal, kill, and even torture animals on this night. Black cats are particularly of interest to these mean humans.

Though humans love Chocolate, all forms of it can be dangerously toxic for dogs and cats. Candy with the artificial sweetener xylitol can be poisonous to dogs too- if you think your dog or cat has gotten into candies, contact the Veterinarian immediately, local Pet ER Hospital or the Pet Poison Helpline (855)764-7661.

Paws, while pumpkins and corn stalks aren’t toxic, keep them away as biting huge pieces could cause intestinal blockage. Lit candles and pumpkins can be especially dangerous as one could get knocked over in all the excitement of the night or your pet could burn themselves. One chomp on electrical cords can shock your pet silly or even cause death.

Don’t dress up your dog or cat unless you are absolutely pawsitive they like it! Try the costumes on before the big night. Last minute attempts could prove to be too stressful for everyone. BARKS! HISS! Costumes should not constrict movement, hearing, or the ability to breathe or bark and meow.  Festive bandanas are a great idea.  Remove costumes immediately which appear to cause stress and allow your dog or cat to wear my preferred one, “au naturel.”

Provide your cat with toys to distract them. The toys might distract the cat when trick-or-treaters are at your home.  Play some quiet music too. Ask your Veterinarian about products which could help your cat.

Pawing about cats, this is something I did not know. Do not allow your mini-humans to parade around the house in their Halloween costumes in front of the cat. Barks, cats tend to get scared when their humans look different than usual.

If you haven’t already, post the phone number to your dog’s Veterinarian and the nearest Emergency Pet Veterinary Clinic where you will see it and not waste time looking for it.

Barks, and Meows, if your dog or cat does go missing, Halloween night being a night when many pets bolt out of fear, be sure to contact your local Animal Shelter

Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad!

Hearts
(C) Noah and Samson!
WOOF! MEOW! Samson and I wish our pawsome parents a most "Happy 22nd Anniversary!" We love you so much! We love that you adopted both of us, taught us how to live in a human's home and to get along like a good dog and cat! Meow, I think we did most of the work Noah! Paws, probably, but I want to thank them for all they have done since there are pawlenty of dogs and cats without homes or humans to love them.

Mom and Dad drove a long distance to meet both Samson and I. I was staying in Potomac, Maryland which is not nearly as far as Samson.... he was in Annapolis, but several years later. Mom and Dad treat us like part of the family, not just a dog and cat they got from rescues. They are the bestest humans!

MEOW! I'll say they are- I was scared to death! I had lost my "Forever Home" for reasons I don't know! I found myself in a strange home with humans who turned out to be really nice but I was still scared. No sooner did I start to settle a bit, though I kinda thought I wouldn't be there long, I was taken Mom and Dad's house. I recognized her and Dad from their visit. They gave me a pawsome home and pawlenty of time to relax and unwind. Now, I curl up with Mom every morning and evening for belly rubs and lots of snuggling! Purr, am still not too sure about Dad but I love him because he did not object to me being adopted and coming to live with them.

Barks! I was a little scared too but since they adopted me from a rescue who got me from a shelter off of some list I don't understand, I am really thankful! I was a stray who had to learn about human life! If it makes you feel any better Samson, I have NEVER been certain about Dad either. Barks!

We couldn't let a pawsome date like this go by without wishing them many more days of love and happiness.  BARK! MEOW!

WOOF! You have undoubtedly heard about the rescue efforts which have happened because of Hurricane Michael? Barks, Lab Rescue was one of the dog rescue organizations who went to shelters in the North and South Carolina areas ahead of the storm to rescue dogs who had been lost or abandoned by their humans and ended up at the shelter. My pawsomely grand friend "Lab Lady" brought by this sweetheart for you to meet! Annie May!
dog

Annie May is very shy since so much is new to her! She prefers things to be a bit quieter! She is looking for a "Forever Home" in a rural or suburban single-family home.

WOOF! Annie May is staying with some pawsomely nice pups! One of them thinks she has dirty ears because she washes them every day! Another one always want to play! She goes chasing squirrels with them and is learning how to play with squeaky toys. She is learning about playing fetch too.

Annie May has such pawsomely-learned house manners that her foster Mom allows her to roam around the house when she is out. She loves sleeping on her big round dog bed.

Annie May would love to have a "Forever Home" with other dogs to learn from and play with! She's a bit nervous when it's windy out and doesn't like sudden movements or loud noises.

Annie May thrives on attention! She wants a human(s) who will spend lots of time with her! She loves ear rub and neck massages. Barkingly, she loves being outside and going for walks.

Annie May is good with other dogs she's met, has no known history with cats and is approved for mini-humans ages 10 and older.

If you would like to learn more about dog adoption, pawlease visit the Lab Rescue Adoption Guide!

WOOF! WOOF! It's so pawsome to catch up with my friend "Miss Joanne" from Operation Paws for Homes! She moved far away and I haven't been able to bark or paw with her in a while! She brought by a pawsomely handsome fella for you to meet! Sears!

Sears is an active fella who is looking for an active human too, paws, be active with him! He can play by himself but loves to play with humans too. He's a master at fetch and tug-of-war!

Barkingly paws, Sears playing with my foster's kitty! Watch their video here! He is very careful with her since she's smaller than him. He is respectful of cats! He gets along with other dogs he's met too.

Though he's a young fella, around 1-year-old, Sears has his housetraining skills pawfected. He finds it a safe place and comfortable.

Sears has learned many basic commands and is a quick learner. He loves to learn tricks and commands, especially when followed by treats!
Dog

Barkingly, with proper introductions, Sears does well with humans. He's met mini-humans and loves them. Paws, a home with lots of mini-humans coming and going with lots of loud noises or unexpected activity wouldn't make me as comfortable as I need a quiet and calm environment.

If you would like to learn more about dog adoption, pawlease visit the Operation Paws for Homes Dog Adoption Guide.

MEOW! MEOW! It's me Samson! I hope you've had a pawsome week! My pawsome friend "Cat Lady" from PetConnect Rescue brought by a handsome cat named Fezz for you to meet!

Last September, PetConnect Rescue joined other rescues to "clear the shelter" of a West Virginia shelter who had a total of 8 cages hold cats and kittens! Shelter staff are often faced with having to make some very tough decisions but on that day, the shelter staff went home smiling. Paws, so did Fezz.
Cat Adoption

Fezz is a pawsomely outgoing boy. He loves to meet humans with hugs, he will stand on his hind legs and place his paws around your neck, and headbutts. He's a purr-machine and kneads the air in pawfect contentment. He will even let you cradle him like a baby or slung over your shoulder. Meows, he's happiest receiving affection from his human.

Meow, he will be the happiest being your one-and-only cat too! He wasn't phased when around a cat-friendly-dogs in his foster home.  He enjoys mini-humans of all ages.

If you would like to learn more about adopting a cat from PetConnect Rescue, please visit the PetConnect Rescue Cat Adoption Guide.

If you would like to apply to meet or adopt this handsome fella, pawlease complete the PetConnect Rescue Adoption Application! Once submitted, an Adoption Coordinator will contact you.

Veterinary Technician Week, Oct. 15-19, 2018

"Veterinary Technicians at Ohana Veterinary Care, Bristow, VA"
(C) Welch Photography
Thank You Veterinary Technicians!

WOOF! BARKS! Maybe even a few growls here and there - though my human doesn't like it when I do that and fusses at me to stop - paws, I have to let you know my opinion about going to the Veterinarian! WOOF!

I am blessed to have to mostest bestest Veterinarian Technicians ever! When I go over there for a physical examination or even another issue, they treat me like their friend. Barks, then, they ask me why I am there. A question I wonder myself but my human quickly answers! We talk a few minutes so they can confirm what medications I am taking, what food I eat, what exercises I am doing, and all about me that they'd ever want to know and then some! BARKS!

I think these pawsome humans work much like a human's nurse would when they go to the doctor or the hospital. Barkingly, I have to admit, I think the Veterinary Technicians job is more rewarding! WOOF!

October 15 - 19 is Veterinary Technicians Week. I salute all the Veterinary Technicians who works so hard to help maintain the health of the animal's in their care! Barks and paws!

WOOF! WOOF! It's been a few weeks since I heard from my pawsome friend "Lab Lady" from Lab Rescue. I got worried and concerned about her so I sent an email only to learn she hadn't been getting my emails! Am barkingly happy that she is alright, for "Lab Lady" - this is! WOOF!

WOOF! Harvey and Floyd are looking for a "Forever Home" in a single-family home with a fence! Bark! The pair will need to be adopted together because they are bonded paw pals!

The boys make pawsome company to their foster parents as they alert them to humans coming to the front door.

Harvey and Floyd love snoozing on the couch with regular visits to the backyard wandering and smelling all the scents they can pawssibly sniff! With the cooler weather coming in, the boys like to enjoy more time outside- as much as pawssible.

Harvey loves lying in the warm grass and has a playful side. He loves to play tug-of-war and running in the yard with his foster brother.  Floyd is pawsitively satisfied to watch the antics from his comfy spot on the couch! WOOF! Barks.  Barkingly, occasionally, the pair like to do zoomies in the backyard.

Harvey is the extrovert dog who comes up to you wanting to be petted and have his belly scratched! Barks, Floyd tends to take it all in before allowing new humans to give him scratches and pets. The boys love the comforts of air conditioning to fresh air. Harvey loves chasing tennis balls and playing in the house while Floyd is happy to watch! BARKS!

WOOF! WOOF! WOOF! My pawsome friend "Great Dane Dame" from the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League came by this week with a most pawsome lady for you to meet, Maya!

Maya is 10-1/2-years-old but has the energy of a Dane half her age! She loves going for walks, meeting new humans, and is friendly with some dogs- it depends on the dog! WOOF! Barkingly, she isn't good with cats! She is quiet and calm too. She doesn't bark when humans come to the door so they can have the oppawtunity to pet her!
Dog

Creative: Allen Pearson

Maya doesn't like toys or most treats. All she wants is attention, attention, and attention. She will sit on everyone's lap so they can stay seated and pet me! She loves humans and being with them.

Maya does get nervous sometimes and will patrol the house and property to make sure everything and everyone is where they should be! WOOF! Thunderstorms and loud noises scare her.

Maya is recommended for mini-humans ages 12 and older since she has some arthritis in her feet and doesn't like being touched there.

Maya doesn't have food aggression but will protect high-value treats like the pawsome meat bone she stole from the trashcan. WOOF! BARKS! She will check countertops for something delicious being left there but will politely wait for a human to offer it to here!

If you would like to learn more about dog adoption, adoption requirements and policies, pawlease visit the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League Adoption Procedures.

WOOF! Do you love Great Danes, but, for whatever reason, are not able to adopt? Please consider supporting Maya financially. Donations will assist with her care. Any extra funds will be used to assist other Great Dane at the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League. Interested, please donate HERE!

Help Rescued Dogs and Cats at an Online Pawction!

(C) Allen Pearson

WOOF! BARK! MEOWS! Do you love dogs and cats and want to help them find humans to love and their "Forever Homes?" My friends at PetConnect Rescue are hosting an online Pawction to raise funds to help dogs and cats.

PetConnect Rescue rescued 82 cats and dogs from shelters located in North and South Carolina before Hurricane Florence struck the coast. They are among the nearly 800 cats and dogs who have made their way to our area this year - thanks to PetConnect Rescue! WOOF! BARK!

To help PetConnect Rescue continue saving more lives and providing the vetting, transportation, supplies, and training these animals need, pawlease participate in the PAWction!

WOOF! I am a PetConnect Rescue alumnus. Thanks to the work they did in 2009, I got out of the backwoods of North Carolina to safety, then, to the loving arms of pawsome humans. Barkingly, I have made my humans so pawsitively happy, they wouldn't know what to do without me! Hey, I have made them healthier too by taking them for walks, playing fetch in the yard, letting them pet me, rub my belly and scratch my ears. WOOF! So, it's a win-win situation. BARKS!

By participating in the PAWction, you are choosing to be part of all our rescues' happy endings. Thank you. Now go and let your heart do the bidding! PetConnect Rescue relies on your donations to continue their work.

To participate and learn more, PeetConnect Rescue PAWction. The online PAWction is happening now through October 14!

Samson's First Cat Post!

Cat
"Samson"
(C) Allen Pearson
Hello! My name is Samson. Meow! Yes, I am Noah’s little brother except I’m not that little. Meow! I’m a big cat. A Maine Coon who knows how to stand proud! Meow!

I am new to Noah’s home as you may already know. Meow! I moved in on Sunday afternoon, June 17, 2018. Meow! At 3-years-old, I am well-educated in the art of being a pawsome cat! I am well-versed in the skills of living with a dog. My skills have come in handy with Noah though he's really a good guy.

Meow! Yes, I’ve been hiding for the past few weeks. Meow! I’m a bit shy and wouldn’t you if you moved into a home with a big black dog like Noah? Hiss. Meow? He’s a great guy but I didn’t really know that when I moved in. At first, he looked like a big black dog ready to eat me! I had no idea he’d been raised with cats and his humans just didn’t have one for a while due to caring for ill parents.
Cat
"Samson"
(C) Allen Pearson

Speaking of Noah, so far, MEOW, he is really great! He smiles at me often and usually goes his way to catch up with Dad. He loves to hang out with Dad which makes me wonder….

The lady who adopted me is just meowingly pawsome. She should be inducted into the “Bestest Cat Mommies in the Universe Society!” I love her to no end! MEOW! She lets me crawl up onto her lap and cuddle and paw her and head-butt her and kiss her and, meow, well, you name it. She is the greatest! I have found cat heaven! P-u-u-u-r-r-r!

I’m still not too sure about the tall skinny guy. I understand many humans aren’t too sure about him either! MEOW! MEOW! Purrs. But, the dog stands by him and says he the greatest. He gives the dog the bestest, a new word I learned, of whatever he wants! Meow! Paws, why is it he rarely wears shirts except on Sunday mornings? He seems nice enough. Purrs, it will a bit longer before I love on him like I do Mom but I am Moms cat. meows.

Mom and Dad have given me a nice place to live. I’ve gotten lost twice trying to find my food but that’s because I was new here and a bit afraid. If I heard something, a noise of any kind, I would scurry to a place to hide. One morning, Dad was up early and he was coming up the steps about the time I finished eating and was going down the steps. He scared me so I took off like a flash of lightning. I heard him tell Mom later that I nearly gave him a heart attack! Meow… hee hee... Oops...sorry Dad. I’m still a bit afraid of him but not as much as before!

I have been having lots of fun watching the hummingbirds fly up to the feeder on the sunroom window. These birds fly so fast and they use these long stick-looking things to get stuff out of this red plastic thing. Dad says they get their food from those things. Not sure how that works but they are the most beautiful birds.

Dad has a bunch of containers and pots on the deck he likes to fill with flowers. The other day he sat out there for a few hours cutting off the dead flowers and cleaning up the deck. I like watching him through the storm door window but I have to admit, I'm not sure why he does what he does. Maybe that's why I can't figure him out-  meow.

You'll see me around as Noah has agreed to let me write a few blog posts every now and again.
