A Barks and Meowy New Year! Happy 2022!

Photo by Tim Mossholder on Unsplash
"Resolutions"

“This is one of my favorite times of year Samson and Abby! We celebrate a New Year and make some New Year’s Resolutions to change some bad habits or to try and reach a few goals.”

“Purr, since I am beyond pawfection, I have no bad habits nor do I need to reach any goals. I am CAT! I am pawfect! I meow! I hiss! I purr! Therefore I am!! MEOW!”

“Paws, no one is pawfect! WOOF! And everyone, including humans, should have goals to aim for whether it’s exercising, learning a new skill, reading that novel you’ve been wanting to for the past 100 years. It’s fun and makes you a better dog, cat, or human when you reach these goals.

I resolve to take my human on more walks in 2022. He got a little plump during these past few months! Not good- the belly is opening the doors again. We will aim high on our walks and do it!”

“Meow, I get it! I resolve that I WILL GET to drink my human’s entire glass of milk before he realizes I have done it! It WILL happen! MEOWS!”

“WOOF! I am pawlanning to take my human on more car rides with the windows and moonroof open and music blaring really loud. I’ll get the attention of that pretty Rotty yet! WOOF!

“MEOW! I resolve to cuddle up on Mom’s lap making her stay home from work and abandon all else to pet me and scratch my belly ALL DAY!”

“WOOF! I resolve to get my humans to take more vacations! Pawssibly to see all the pawsome dogs statues in various cities created to memorialize the barkingly great dogs who have done great tasks of some sort for humans! I haven’t seen any of them! BARKS!”

“Meow, I resolve to train the humans to JUMP at my every MEOW!” Hiss! Not sure why they haven’t caught on yet!”

“Barks, I am going to take my human on more railfanning day trips. Barkingly, I am going to learn more about the railroads so maybe I can understand what is it that fascinates the guy so much watching these huge trains go through towns, cities, and the countryside. WOOF!”

“Meow, I am going to learn to go for car rides with you and Dad so I can have fun watching trains and going all over the universe! Purrs! That will be fun!”

“Woof, that’s a great one Samson, I hope you get to do it. You might be able to join us on vacations too, who knows?! Barks.

“Our bestest barks and meows for a blessed 2022!”

The True Meaning of Christmas!

“Arf? Bark. Growl! Woof. I see lights in every color, trees decorated with lights and barkzillion types of ornaments, yards full of decorations with these wild inflatables of nearly everything imaginable! WOW! I’m loving Christmas. It’s so bright, cheery, and exciting!”

“Woof, Abby, I’m glad you are enjoying the festivities of the season. It can be quite an exciting time.”

“Meows, yes, Abby and Noah, this season is full of color, light, glitter, fun decorations, and even some presents! I can’t wait to find out what Santa Claus brings me this year. Paws, I have been the bestestest cat ever, as always you know, so I think Santa will bring me a lot of loot.”

“Arf?! I’m a little concerned, Noah and Samson. It seems that I’ve gotten into a lot of trouble this year. I mean, I’m a young puppy and I like to explore, chew, and taste things, every single thing that I can put into my mouth, including Dad’s headphones, and I have gotten into a whole lot of trouble but it wasn’t on purpose. Woofs, I’m still concerned. Will Santa visit me and bring me presents?”

“HISS! HISS! You dear Abby will get all coal this year! Every present you open… will be coal! HISS!”

“WOOF! Paws, Samson, that’s not nice. Abby, I think Santa Claus will take your youthful spirit and vibes into consideration. After all, the intent of your heart wasn’t to be mean or trouble. Anyways, all these decorations, parties, gifts, and stuff isn’t really what Christmas is all about.”

“Purrs, purringly true! I apawlopogize Abby- it was all in fun! We are really blessed when we realize that Noah, thank you for mentioning.”

“What do you mean, barks, Noah?”

“Barks, Christmas is a very special sacred day! It is the birthday of Jesus Christ which happened a little more than two thousand years ago.”

“WOW! Noah, He must be really old by now?!”

“Barks! WOOFS! Abby, we are to be respectful of Jesus Christ! It’s a holy time of celebration which is told in the Bible.”

“Meows, Abby, the Bible is God’s Word. It is the inerrant truth of God. We, purrs, believe in all of it. God teaches us what He wants us to do and how to live from it. Meow. Noah, would you share the Christmas Story with us?”

“WOOFS! Yes, I would be more than pawsomely happy to do so:

8 That night, in a field near Bethlehem, shepherds were watching over their flocks.
9 Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared in radiant splendor before them,
lighting up the field with the blazing glory of God, and the shepherds were terrified!
10 But the angel reassured them, saying,
'Don’t be afraid, for I have come to bring you good news, the most joyous news
the world has ever heard! And it is for everyone everywhere!
11 For today in Bethlehem a rescuer was born for you. He is the Lord Yahweh, the Messiah.
12 You will recognize him by this miraculous sign:
You will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth and lying in the feeding trough!'
13 Then all at once in the night sky, a vast number of glorious angels appeared,
the very armies of heaven! And they all praised God, singing:
14 'Glory to God in the highest realms of heaven!
For there is peace and a good hope given to the sons of men.'

- Luke 2:8-14, The Passion Translation

Jesus was born to bring humans the Good News of the Gospel. Barkingly, they can be forgiven of their sins and have eternal life in heaven if they ask Him for forgiveness.”

“Meows, purringly, Abby, if anyone wants to know more about Jesus forgiving them, the Bible, God, Salvation, and God’s Plan of Salvation, pawlease take time to visit Peace With God.”

My friends at Operation Paws for Homes who have been voluntarily working diligently helping dogs to get adopted brought by a handsome fella for you to meet, Heroscape!

Heroscape is around 2-years-old, a medium-size adult Hound/Beagle mix. He is looking for his "Forever Home!" with humans to love who will love him too!

Barkingly, Heroscape is a sweet and affectionate fella! Just take a look at his photos! He loves humans. He became comfortable with his foster family quite quickly.

Mr. Heroscape is house- and crate-trained. He is comfortable whether in his crate or not.

WOOFS! He does get a bit excited when first meeting new humans or finds something interesting. Barks, but he calms down quickly.

Pawlease click here, here, here, here, and here to see videos that Heroscape made to help himself get adopted.

Heroscape is up-to-date on his vaccinations and has been neutered. He is best in a home without small mini-humans.

Noah's Houndisms! Silk Christmas Plants

Photo by Jessica Fadel on Unsplash
"Poinsettias!"
Photo by Jessica Fadel on Unsplash

WOOFS! A little Christmas decorating tips from one of the pawsomest crate decorating designers known in the dog universe- ME! Noah, that is!

Decorating with Christmas-type plants can be incredibly beautiful! Barkingly, many plants can be toxic to pets while non-toxic ones may cause gastrointestinal upset if eaten in large quantities. I am pawsitive my human would not want me to have gas when all his human friends come over for a pawty. I have been known to cause a home to be evacuated! Woofs. It was a bit embarrassing and Dad wasn't happy as the humans thought it was him! Bark. Plants such as Amaryllis, Azaleas, Chrysanthemums, Evergreens, Holly, Ivy, Juniper, Lily, and Mistletoe can be toxic. Often though toxic, pawssibly fatal, the Poinsettia may irritate the mouth and stomach but are considered low toxicity.

Instead of taking any chances with Abby, Samson, or me getting poisoned or sick, our humans decorate with silk Poinsettias and the like to create a festive decor! Woofs, it's pawsitively amazing at how real some silk plants look these days.

Friday's Friend, Dog Adoption, Lab Rescue

Black Labrador Retriever Dog Adoption
Photo: Lab Rescue
Creative: from The Dog's Paw!

WOOF! Barks! Happy Friday! My friend "Lab Lady" from Lab Rescue brought by a handsome fella named Ollie for you to meet!

Ollie, a 7-year-old Black Labrador Retriever, is looking for his "Forever Home!" in a rural or suburban single-family home in a quiet neighborhood. a physical fence is a requirement!

(C) 2021, from The Dog's Paw!
Barkingly, Ollie is a sweet, low-maintenance kinda fella who loves snuggling. His foster humans say he is the bestest-behaved dog they've ever had.

Woofs, Ollie knows many commands and has excellent skills! Barks, he sits until given permission to move! Bark, this is cool, he knows the "place" command so his foster humans can answer the door without him going to the door too.

Ollie waits to join his foster humans on couches or beds until he is invited. Barkingly, he doesn't exit the car when the door opens until he's told to come out.

Paws, he has pawsome house manners and hardly ever barks. He is a laid-back fella who just wants to hang out and go for a leisurely walk or two. Barkingly, Ollie is good on leash but tends to pull a bit when he sees small animals crossing his path! A leash tug and command "leave it" usually gets him back on track.

Woofinglys, Ollie does a great job ignoring neighborhood dogs barking at him.

He loves going for car rides and is a very well-hehaved companion.

Barks, Ollie warms up quickly to humans. Paws, he wants to be your one-and-only-dog-that-is so he doesn't have to share your attention!

Ollie has been busy creating videos to help his sweet self get adopted:

Ollie is looking for a quiet home with humans who enjoy watching TV or reading a good book with a pup nearby to pet. He is approved for adults-only household.

Barkingly, he is good with other dog, but not cats.

Noah's Houndisms! Front Yard Christmas Inflatables!

Photo by Kevin at Flickr Creative Commons
"Inflatable Santa!"
Photo by Kevin at Flickr Creative Commons

WOOFS! It's the most pawsomest time of the year! I always look forward to seeing all the Christmas lights, decorations in the front yards, and all the new toys I'll get because I've been the bestest dog my humans could ever want!

Barks, humans remember when walking your dogs during the Christmas season especially young pups or recently adopted dogs to pay extra attention when walking during the season.

When I was just a young pup and fairly new to my humans and the neighborhood, I was caught off guard, surprised, by these crazy-looking colorful balloons in a neighbors yard. WOOFS! They are called "inflatables" which are designed in various forms and styles for humans to celebrate Christmas! Some of them even move or wiggle! They are not to be peed on or even sniffed. The first one I saw scared the boogers out of me! It was a big mouse that jumped out of this big colorful well-lit box. since I couldn't figure out what the thing was, I went up to pee on it. Fortunately, my human was paying close attention and prevented a disaster.

Tips for Christmas Decorating with Dogs and Cats!

"Christmas Decorations"
freestocks.org from Pexels

Oh, my barkness! I thought my humans, or least Dad, was going a bit off the edge- again- this past Saturday. He and mom assembled what turned out to be a tree. I wanted to inaugurate it to the property but Dad kept looking at me funny so I didn’t! The tree was placed in the front room and many boxes surrounded it. Barkingly, what a beautiful tree it turned out to be! For many years, my humans put up a ceramic tree on the TV cabinet, which diligently served its purpose of celebration and keeping the cat from swatting ornaments. It was beautiful with its lights brightening the days and nights.

During the Christmas season. It’s pawsitively impawtant to pay pawticularly close attention to your fine furry friends and their pawssible antics with Christmas decorations and the like. The glitter, the shininess, the cute, and the clever will do their best laying there on the floor or even hung on the tree to get the attention of your beloved pet so you must be a bit wiser to prevent problems!

My humans have some old ornaments, some really old ornaments, some ancient ornaments, and those which have gone into fossilization as they were new when my human was just a young sprat! These variety of ornaments were in boxes, wrapped in paper, or bubble-wrap stuff, which are fun toys for me. Behaving was not something I can do around those toys. My human knew this because as I snuck closer to these items, he kept them away as they hold glass and plastic which could harm me.

Having recently read a story about a cat swallowing a piece of string and having major surgery to remove it, reminded me to share with humans to keep ribbons and accessories out of reach. Harmless as they may seem, my cat friend learned differently!

If you enjoy live plants around the house, be careful to place poinsettias, holly, mistletoe, and the like out of reach! These plants can be poisonous to your pet. My humans use fabric-like plants so he can enjoy the color and doesn’t have to worry about me! Of course, I might still knock off the plant and get dirt everywhere. BARKs!

Barkingly, my advice for the safety of us all, do not use edible Christmas decorations on the tree. We are curious enough about the tree without having the incentive of food smells which can be incredibly delicious making us want to explore the tree even more. Paws, if my human did that, I would go after the food and lay there until I was done and look at him- “gee Dad, that was delicious… more please!”

If you use a live Christmas tree, keep the area free of pine needles. Though seemingly harmless, if ingested, they could cause intestinal blockage and who knows what gaseous moments they could cause- who wants an evacuation during a Christmas party?!

WOOFS! Instead of a live Christmas tree, or even an artificial one, a product we just learned about is decorative wall decals! These simply go on the wall pawsitively easier than decorating a Christmas tree. Barkingly, there are no messes from pine needles and no vacuuming. After the Christmas season, remove the tree off the wall, not taking it apart and re-boxing.

If you burn candles in your home, place them high up on mantles or other places where curious noses and excited wagging tails can not knock them over. Sometimes I get so excited to see my Uncle Ed that my tail wags fast and furious all things in the way are, well, no longer in the way- BARK!

When decorating our tree, I never saw light bulbs on a string look so tempting to play with before. They move across the room, here and there, there and here, and it was hard not to play with them. Now, if I were a cat, I can only imagine how difficult it could be to not play with and pull and maybe chew these cords. Then, get an electrical shock which could be very unhealthy, to say in polite company, for the cat. And the dog too. Keep cords away from pets by taping them against a wall or cover them with those cord cover things. Better safe than sorry.

Meows! Purrs! Happy Friday, my fine friends! I hope you have had a pawsome week and, I know, you are ready for the weekend! My friend "Miss Sherry" from Humane Society of Northern Virginia (Advocates for Abused and Abandoned Pets (A3P)) brought by a sweet guy for you to meet! Snickers is looking for his "Forever Home!" with humans to love who will love him too!

Meows! A good Samaritan contacted the Humane Society of Northern Virginia about a stray cat that was following him but was walking strangely. Snickers was taken in and evaluated which proved he had a significant injury to his left rear leg. HISS! His leg was fractured and splintered in three places. He needed surgery to repair it versus amputating his leg. The surgery was successful with Snickers recovering. What a stoic fella this guy is!

Snickers in super lovely, very cute with cute a bit of handsomeness too!

He is neutered, current with age-appropriate vaccinations and preventatives, and microchipped.

Friday's Friend! Great Dane Dog Adoption, Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League

Great Dane Dog Adoption

WOOF! WOOF! Happy Friday! Dad used to say when he worked in an office, he would look forward to today. The Friday of the week after Thanksgiving because the week was always long since last week was only a 3-day workweek. Then, he would spend the weekend preparing for Christmas. Do you have my present yet?

(C) 2021, from The Dog's Paw!My friend the "Great Dane Dame" from the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League has been pawfully busy with her volunteers taking care of Great Dane dogs left in their rescue. This week, they brought by Blu for you to meet. Paws, she is looking for her "Forever Home!" with humans to love who will love her too! Woofs.

Blu is a 3-1/2-year-old Merle Great Dane. She is doing well in her foster home settling in to a household routine and is less anxious when her foster mom heads out to work.

Blu's leash skills have improved quite well as have her responses to commands. She is making improvements every pawsome day! Barkingly, she enjoys learning new things, pawlaying fetch, snuggling with her human, and chewing a massive Nylabone before bedtime.

Blu is a human pleaser though when meeting someone new for the first time, she will be hesitant. She likes time to sniff visitors and warm up first. Then, paws, you'll get kisses and lots of lovin's. Barks!

Woofs, Blu does not like fast movements, mini-humans make her nervous, nor hearing angry/loud voices.

Blu isn't a complete velcro-Dane! She enjoys being with her humans and snoozing within earshot as long as she gets her daily quota of snuggles and leans!

Barkingly, Miss Blu is good with mini-humans, dogs, but is unknown with cats. She has lived with other large dogs.

To learn about adopting a Great Dane from the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League, more about Blu, or pawssibly meeting her, pawlease visit their Adoption Guide!

BARKS! Do you love Great Danes, but, for whatever reason, are not able to adopt? Pawlease consider supporting Blu financially. Donations will assist with her care. A Dog's Life in the Country: A Visit to the River

(C) 2021, Margie Harlow

WOOFS! BARKS! WOOFS! I am pawsitively LOVING living in the country! My mostest favorite pawrt is having my friends Max, Mojo, and Carly around all the time. We have so much fun running the fence, playing and running in my backyard, and WOOFS playing in all of our front yards too!

(C) 2021, Margie Harlow
"Max and Abby"
(C) 2021, Margie Holmes
Yesterday, I got a humongous pawsomely grand surprise from Max's Mom, "Miss Margie!" I had the mostest pawleasant time walking my human when I was greeted by her near the end of it. She was taking Max to the river to romp and play and invited me to go along. I was so surprised when Dad said "YES!" I could go with them. I think he wanted a few hours of quiet! Barks. Arf?

WOOF! I was so excited! I jumped in the pickup truck right next to Max! I did my best to behave myself like Dad asked but it was so challenging to do that. There was so much to take in as we drove along the curvy two-lane country roads. The beautiful trees, the houses, the cars, pawlenty of things to see!

Barkingly, I sat and waited and tried to be on my bestestest behavior ever because I paws and hope Miss Margie will take me again and again and, well, again! WOOFS!

We turned off the main road by this really cool looking store-type pawlace. I'll have to paw this so that I can get Dad to bring me over here and pawssibly do some shopping! Barks.

WE ARRIVE! WOOF! I tear out of the car with my buddy Max and look at all the water. I jump in and realize I may have made a mistake and jump back out! WOOF! Barks.

Barks! Max and I ran all over the pawlace! We climbed over rocks, we ran along the river, we chased each other! We had an hour of doggie fun like nobody's business! I got soaked and soaked some more! Woofs!

I can't thank Miss Margie enough for taking me along with Max to the river! I love country life!
