April is National Lyme Disease Awareness Month!

Ticks! WOOF! Far from any dog, cat, or humans favorite bug! They sneak up on you, chances are while you are somewhere having some fun with someone you love and they bite you! When they bite, human, canine, or feline, they can cause Lyme Disease which can be very uncomfortable, even fatal in some cases, for your dog. Cats, although not impawssible, rarely get Lyme Disease.

Barkingly, there is no way for humans to know whether a tick has Lyme Disease much less see one before it bites your dog or cat. Paws, and it can be difficult to find them on your pets too! So, what's a dog and cat to do?!

WOOF! WOOF! Have your humans bark and paw with your Veterinarian to begin a stringent routine of preventatives to prevent your dog or cat from getting the disease! Should your pet already have Lyme Disease, a routine still needs to be followed. Several pawsome products are available and should be followed as directed.

Woofs, another impawtant part of keeping ticks away is to maintain the backyard where your dog, and pawssibly cat, like to run, play, roll around or lay in the grass, and dig! My human doesn't allow the grass to grow very high between mowings- which is another way to keep the snakes away too! Paws, since he loves me and Samson with all his everlovin' heart, Dad uses a tick prevention treatment in the yard. Barks, he likes to use NaturaLawn of America’s Natural Flea & Tick Control Service (we are not affiliated). This way, he’s doing a double-prevention to benefit both of us.

Barkingly, don't forget to clean up the yard debris by pulling tall weeds, cutting back perennials, raking leaves, and removing leaf piles especially those against the house or deck, and dispose of properly. These can be full of ticks! YUCK! WOOF!

During our long walks and hikes, especially on nature trails, Dad does his best to keep me from going off the path BARKS, but sometimes I just love to sniff the scents along the way and end up getting into it all! Barks! My stubborn Plott Hound-self will take off for it faster than Dad can react sometimes! After our walks, Dad checks me for ticks and lumps paying attention to my arms,
legs, neck, and inside the ears. For dogs with dark color coats, using a fine-tooth comb helps.  If he finds a lump he’ll investigate it. Any ticks found are removed following Veterinary instructions or assistance.

WOOF! Humans should wear repellent, long-sleeve shirts, and long pants to guard against those rascally tick jumping from the wilds of the universe or your dog to you!

Barks, be sure to start a routine of tick and flea treatment! Talk to your dog or cat's Veterinarian today.

Gracie doesn't like the noise, chaos, hustle, and bustle of the city so she is looking for a "Forever Home" in a rural or suburban single-family house with a fenced backyard so she can run zoomies! She likes the quiet of the country!

Barks! Gracie will do best in a home with multiple dogs and needs at least two dogs already living in her adoptive home as they give her confidence! She loves running around playing in the sunshine then quietly snuggling!

WOOF! Gracie is a sweet and energetic girl who needs to be adopted by patient humans! She has made great strides in her bravery and is learning to push through fear. She will grow to love her humans if they are very patient and give her pawlenty of time to earn her trust! Paws, it can take her up to a week to settle in a new home and begin feeling like her pawsome-self!

She enjoys walks and does splendidly on a lead! She loves walks being leashed with her canine buddies!

Gracie can be left uncrated.

She does not handle human parties well but is thrilled with dog playdates in her physically-fenced yard.

Barkingly, Gracie loves that her foster mom is home working. She spends her days curled up in a bed by her workstation!

Gracie enjoys being outside in the spring weather rolling around in the grass but not the winds and storms!

Gracie is a YouTube Superstar! Pawlease watch her videos, Gracie!Gracie Comes in the House!Gracie and Hayley Take Treats from a New Friend! Gracie Learns to Catch!Gracie Play in the Snow! and Gracie playing with Hayley!!

Barks, paws, Gracie truly ignores cats! She's been around them in her vacation household and didn't pay any attention to their antics!

Gracie is recommended for mini-humans ages 10 and older.

National Heartworm Awareness Month!

American Heartworm Society
(C) American Heartworm Society, Used by Permission

WOOF! WOOF! WOOF! Barks! April is National Heartworm Awareness Month! Paws, Heartworm is a nasty disease that affects dogs and cats. Barks, dogs are the natural hosts but it is not their fault!

Arf? What is Heartworm Disease? It is a serious and potentially fatal disease caused by foot-long worms (heartworms) that live in the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure, and damage to other organs. Heartworm disease affects dogs, cats, and other animals. Barkingly, I learned that by reading the American Heartworm Societies Pet Parent Resources page.

WOOFS! Heartworm is transmitted to dogs through the bite of an infected mosquito! Paws, how do you tell if a mosquito is infected? You can't. Barkingly, all it takes is for one to bite your dog!

Paws, if untreated, the disease can affect the dog’s health and quality of life even after the parasites are gone! Heartworm causes lasting damage to the heart, lungs, and arteries. Barkingly, in the early stages, dogs show few or no symptoms, paws, as the infection persists, symptoms develop! Arf, a few symptoms include a mild persistent cough, reluctance to exercise, fatigue after moderate activity, decreased appetite, and weight loss.

WOOF, er MEOWS! Cats are affected by Heartworm too. They are an atypical host for heartworms, and most worms in cats do not survive to the adult stage. Paws, heartworm disease is often undiagnosed in cats. Pawingly, it is impawtant to know, the immature worms can cause damage in the form of a condition is known as ‘heartworm associated respiratory disease (HARD).

The symptoms in cats can be very subtle or very dramatic! Paws, they may include coughing, asthma-like attacks, periodic vomiting, lack of appetite, or weight loss. Paws, occasionally an affected cat may have difficulty walking, experience fainting or seizures, or suffer from fluid accumulation in the abdomen. Unfortunately, the first sign in some cases is a sudden collapse of the cat or sudden death.

Barks, medications used to treat heartworm infections in dogs cannot be used in cats! Prevention is the only means of protecting cats!

How do you prevent it? Humans must take appropriate action through medications or treatments as recommended by their dog or cat's Veterinarian.

Barks, my humans adopted me from PetConnect Rescue knowing that I had been diagnosed with Heartworm. The rescue did the appropriate treatment with their Veterinarian, but my humans had to agree to continue treatment as specified by my Veterinarian. In my paws, it is with a monthly pill. WOOF! I'm proud to say he has done it consistently for ten years.

If you would like to learn more about heartworm, visit the American Heartworm Society where you will find a wealth of information!

WOOF! Barks, pawlease meet my friend Skeeter from PetConnect Rescue! He is a 1-year-old Hound mix who is one pawsitively amazing fella!

Barks though this fella is blind, he "sees" all the beauty the world has to offer! Though his eyesight is gone, his enthusiasm for life is not impacted other than needing to warm up to a situation/human. Barkingly, I know a lot of dogs who still have their vision but need to do that! WOOF!

Paws, while he is fine with everyone he meets, his vision loss causes him to startle easily so he would do best in a home without young mini-humans.

WOOF! He has pawcellent house manners and an all-around nice guy! He is house- and crate-trained.

Skeeter will need an adopter who is patient and understands the needs of a sight-impaired dog.

Skeeter is pawsome with other dogs and will need another dog in his "Forever Home" to help show him the ropes!

Meet another buddy from PetConnect Rescue, beautiful Annabelle!

Annabelle loves being with her humans and is great with all ages! She has a bit of a prey drive which emerges if she gets overly excited by lots of barking and running. Paws, dog parks would be out for this lovely lady! Barks!

Annabelle has pawcellent house manners, is affectionate, and good on a leash.

Annabelle requires a home with a fenced yard ideally in a more rural setting. Barks!

WOOF! Barks! I am pawleased to meet a volunteer who works with "Lab Lady" at Lab Rescue this week. Quite a nice lady! She brought by a pawsomely incredibly mostest beautiful senior Black Labrador Retriever, Maya, who is looking for her "Forever Home!" At 14-years-old, she is so p-u-r-t-y! Oh. sorry, I said that already! She is looking for her "Forever Home"  in a rural or suburban single-family home with limited stairs so she can get around easily!

WOOF! Maya learned that there are pawlenty of humans at home right now so she wanted to introduce herself! She knows she will be the pawfect companion for some humans!

Maya is a cherished member of the most honorable society of the Senior Lab Community! Paws, she will be 15-years-old next month and still as adorable as she can be! BARKS!

Being a senior, Miss Maya has learned a few pawsome things, barks-which I will have to learn too.....woof- like knowing she can get snacks when the humans open the refrigerator! She knows mini-humans who know how to open the refrigerator are the bestest of buddies!

Barks, Maya would love to have humans are home more often than not so they can spend a lot of time together!

Maya's favorite activities are soaking up the rays and napping! She would love a human who would share these activities!

Paws, beautiful Miss Maya is house-trained but, due to her age, she does need to be let out more frequently pawssibly every 3-4 hours. She hears mostly with her heart these days and knows a few hand signals. She limps some and is stiff when walking but is familiar with leash walks.

Barks and woofs, Maya is good with other dogs, cats - mostly ignoring them, and mini-humans.

WOOFS! Maya's idea of a pawfect day is joining you for a short daily walk or two, or even three, and napping at your feet and sleeping by your bed at night! Humans looking to add more smile-time to your life, a devoted companion, Maya would be the pawfect addition to your home!

Barks, to learn about dog adoption with Lab Rescue, pawlease visit their Adoption Guide!

WOOF! WOOF! Meet my friend Pihu, pronounced Pee-hoo, from Operation Paws for Homes! At around 1-year-old, she is a Desi Dog (or street dog) who came all the way from New Delhi, India. She heard living in a "Forever Home" in the United States was pawsome so here she is! Barks.

Barks, she is a super extraordinary little gal! As small pups living on the street in India, she was hit by a car which broke her spine in three places. Woofingly, she had to have one rear leg amputated and the other one remains paralyzed. Paws, she is learning to use a wheelchair! WOOF! So cool! Barks! She isn't letting her disability stop her from getting around and living a full life.

Pihu is the most pawsomest and sweetest little pupsters! All she wants is to snuggle and be loved! Paws, pawlease visit her video to see her in action in her foster home!

Arf! Pihu has control of her bowel and bladder within her crate. Barkingly, she is not able to get all her urine out on her own. Paws, but not to worry. A gentle squeeze in the right place, some cute diapers and she's ready to go!

She gets along well with other dogs in her foster home!

Tornado Preparations for Your Dog and Cat!

"Tornado!"
Credit: Flickr Creative Commons, NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) NOAA Photo Library

WOOF! As we saw a few weeks ago in Nashville, and more recently in Texas, Alabama, and Mississippi, the tornado season has begun and has already caused considerable damage to homes, people, and pets. Paws, several humans and pets were displaced during the horrible storms. Barkingly, there is a pawsome, yet somewhat sad, story about a dog who barked so much before the storm hit that he drove his human crazy! Barkingly, he saved his human family while losing his own life! Arf.

Barks, where we live, tornadoes are not that common. Paws, we might see one a year pawssibly two, but maybe not even that! Barks! The thunderstorms are severe and horrible. If Dad is around I like to curl up with him on the couch and wait it out or get in my crate with Mr. Skunky or Mr. Bear and my blankies and pillows and hide! WOOF! WOOF! Samson sometimes waits it out on Dad’s worktable. Other times, he dashes to the basement as fast as his paws will take him.

Barkingly, I have lived here long enough to know though, be prepared. You never know what will happen and it never hurts to be prepared. The storms can come up fast leaving no time to do anything but run for shelter! Paws, too often, pets are left behind when a storm comes up as their humans are unprepared. No pets should be left behind. Barks, here are a few ideas to help you prepare:

  • Know the difference between a “Tornado Watch” and a “Tornado Warning!”
Tornado Watch:” This is issued by the National Weather Service when conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes in and close to the watch area. Their size can vary depending on the weather situation. They are usually issued for a duration of 4 to 8 hours. They normally are issued well in advance of the actual occurrence of severe weather. During the watch, humans should review tornado safety rules and be prepared to move a place of safety if threatening weather approaches. (https://w1.weather.gov/glossary)
Tornado Warning:” This is issued when a tornado is indicated by the WSR-88D radar or sighted by spotters; therefore, people in the affected area should seek safe shelter immediately. They can be issued without a Tornado Watch being already in effect. They are usually issued for a duration of around 30 minutes. (https://w1.weather.gov/glossary).
  • Make certain your dog and cat have valid ID collars and are microchipped. We like to suggest humans use both methods of identification as they are both handy. My human had a visitor in our garage once - a huge Chocolate Labrador Retriever. He was hot, thirsty, and presented a huge problem. No ID. Barks, Dad had to make certain he and I did not come in contact even though it was likely he had his shots and pawssibly would not be a problem. But, why invite one?! An ID collar would have told us he was a neighbor and made finding his home and taking care of him much easier. Unfortunately, Dad did not have a vehicle that day to take him to the Veterinarian to have the microchip checked.
  • When a Tornado Watch is issued, keep your small animals like dogs inside the house! This will make it easy to control them should a tornado strike.
  • For cats, since I know how my cat brother can be, when the alert is issued, move them into their crate and place them in a safe place like a basement, interior room, a windowless bathroom or even a closet. Paws, if pawssible, keep the cat in the same room where you will go should there be a tornado outbreak. This will eliminate your searching for your cat in a storm-related emergency.
  • Before a Tornado Alert is issued, practice moving your pets to safety. Repeated practice monthly or every few weeks will make it much easier to get your dog and pawssibly your cat to cooperate in an emergency. Barking, often if a Tornado strikes and you have to run for cover, your pets will notice your panic and add to their own stress.
  • In the age of cell phones, everyone has photos of the pets to show everyone in the universe. I know my proud human parents have enough photos to create a 1,000 page or more photo album. Pawlease make sure you have great photos of your pet's handy which clearly show their face and any identifying marks which would be useful in finding them.
  • Paws, program the phone numbers of any local animal shelters and rescues in your phone. Often, if you adopted your pet from a rescue, the microchip will indicate it, so have their number too.
Bark! Bark! When the storm is passed and you can safely leave your safe place, begin searching for your pets immediately. Contact local shelters and rescues. Barkingly, be sure to place notices on any social media such as Facebook and NextDoor concerning your lost pet. Contact neighbors and post flyers around your neighborhood about your lost pet!

How much longer? HISS! HISS!

"How Much Longer, Pawlease?!" (C) Allen Pearson Photography
"How Much Longer, Pawlease?!"
(C) Allen Pearson Photography

HISS! HISS! This is my face after only ONE MONTH of my humans being home... all day... every day.... every second ...every minute...every hour...mind you...around the house... no peace... no quiet... this is getting to be incredibly annoying... Noah seems to be doing fine... but then he's a dog ... you know what they say... dad sings... he scares the boogers out of me.... and I dash to the basement because I think a monster is coming to get me... I am so ready for this to be over...I need Dad to go do his work-out as often as he can and well, this really needs to be over soon...Dad plays classical music ... nothing like hours and hours and hours of Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, or one of those other long-haired dudes... p-a-w-l-e-a-s-e humans! ...and he watches trains on Railstream all day...one day he had the volume turned up... a train came blaring its horn and I took off .... maybe I will just hide in the basement ...far away from these crazy humans...then I will get some peace and quiet... unless Dad sings again.. HISS!... isn't there like a law against that or something...?

WOOF! Barks, meet my new pawsome friend Eggsy from Operation Paws for Homes! He tells me that he is as cute as can be! I'll let you humans look at his photos and decide! He is a small-size Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Chihuahua mix!

Eggsy came from a court seize case and has never really known love before coming to his foster mom's house! WOOF! He has learned that humans can be really pawsome!!
Photo: Operation Paws for Homes
Creative: Allen Pearson

Eggsy is getting really good at potty-training and is learning about walking on a leash!

A bit shy and skittish, Eggsy will need a quiet home environment without young mini-humans under age 16 as loud noises and fast movements tend to scare him. He is may grow into a dog that can be around mini-humans but he's not there yet! Paws! He will require an adopter with dog experience.

Visit his videos in foster care here, here, and here!

Friday's Friend! Great Dane Adoption

Great Dane Dog Adoption
Photo: Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League
Creative: Allen Pearson

My buddy Levi from Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League is still for his "Forever Home!" with humans for him to love who will love him!

OH MY BARKS! Don't let his pawsitively distinguished and handsome looks fool you! The cropped ears, black coat, and striking stance, he looks almost as handsome as me, give him a bit of an intimidating look. He is pawsitively sweet and affectionate!

Levi has the pawsitive blend of energy and Dane laziness! He will go out in the backyard and play tug-of-war or jolly ball for a good 20-30 minutes then go inside for a 3-hour nap. Paws, Levi wants nothing more than to be your couch buddy watching TV! WOOF! Barks.
Great Dane Dog Adoption

Barks, Levi has some basic training including "sit," "shake," and will drop the ball at your feet to throw it again! He is house- and crate-trained! Barkingly, though, he does tend to counter-surf so his adopter will need to work with him! His house manners are a little rough around the edges so he will have a training contract as part of his adoption!

Woofingly, Levi has had a few adjustments in his life. He has gone from a home with lots of dogs to hang-out with to no dogs. Barks, he is adjusting well to being an only dog. Barkingly, he will likely need some vigilant training to make sure he plays nicely if he goes to a home with another dog. Paws, as an only dog, he's liking it quite well!

Paws, since Levi has been through a lot of transition, he is initially nervous and shy. He tends to react to quick movements or shy away from being petted. Barkingly, he is learning to warm up.

Barks! To learn more about adopting a Great Dane and to apply to meet or pawssibly adopt Levi, pawlease visit the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Adoption Guide!

Friday's Friend! Labrador Retriever Adoption, Lab Rescue

WOOF! WOOF! Sometimes life brings you a friend when you least expect. Barks, that friend and you become bonded buddies and you do everything in life together. It is really cool to see this happen and that's exactly what happened with Bean and Hopper from Lab Rescue!

Speaking of friends, my dear friend "Lab Lady" of Lab Rescue brought these two by for you to meet. She and I have been buddies for nearly 10 years. She and her team of volunteers work diligently every day to take care of the Labrador Retrievers which come their way. It's a huge challenge but they can handle it.
Yellow Labrador Retriever Dog Adoption
Bean and Hopper are looking for their "Forever Home!" with humans to love who will love them in a single-family house. As pawed, they must be adopted together. Barks, they are looking for a quiet home as they have not been exposed to a busy household!

Bean is a 14-year-old female Black Labrador Retriever and Hopper is a Yellow Labrador Retriever. These two are fun and enthusiastic. Barks, they get along well with other dogs but would prefer to have ALL of your attention to themselves! WOOF!

The pair are very special and sweet who deserve to be spoiled and loved. They are house-trained and do not require a crate.

Barks, Bean and Hopper have no cat history! They are approved for mini-humans ages 10 and older.

Woofs! To learn more about adopting a Labrador Retriever, pawlease visit Lab Rescue's Adoption Guide!
