"HISS! What in paws has got you so excited Noah! Is there a deer in the backyard again?"

"No! WOOF! Almost better than that Samson!"

"What could be better than deer meat for breakfast, lunch or dinner? Meow?"

"My friends at PetConnect Rescue will be featured on Animal Planet's Dog Bowl 2" on Sunday night, February 3, at 3:00 p.m. EST on Animal Planet!

PetConnect Rescue is the rescue who rescued me around 11 years ago. They found me in North Carolina and through Pilots 'n' Paws brought to Maryland where I found my humans to love and a pawsome 'Forever Home!"

"MEOW! Yes, I remember you sharing with me about PetConnect Rescue but what about the Dog Bowl 2?"

"Barkly, PetConnect Rescue is woofingly thrilled to bark about having two players in this year's Dog Bowl 2! The Dog Bowl is returning for its second year! Pawingly, this canine driven football competition is created for adult dogs living in rescues and shelters who are frequently looked over for puppies. The one-hour special is hosted by the award-winning animal advocate, Jill Rappaport!"

"MEOWS! Purr! Really cool Noah!"

Barks, the Dog Bowl will be paired with the pawsomely ever-popular Puppy Bowl and aired during the "Road to Puppy Bowl" on Saturday, February 2 at 8 PM ET/PT before the big event: PUPPY BOWL XV! There are 63 dogs from 31 shelters across 15 states participating! Paws, including the number of pups participating, there are over 150 adoptable dogs and puppies featured in PUPPY BOWL and DOG BOWL in 2019!

WOOF! The dogs in DOG BOWL range in ages from 2-16 years old and include a variety of breeds and mixed breed from a Cocker Spaniel, Pug, German Shepherd, Basset Hound, Pomeranian, Chihuahua, Bulldog, Pekingese, Boxer, American Eskimo, and many others!

WOOF! From my friends at PetConnect Rescue, Iggy and Timmy will storm the gridiron making their mostest cutest-ever ear pulls and tail wags as part of Team Oldie as they compete to win the day and your hearts!
Barks, Iggy, a 5-year-old Shih Tzu mix, came to PetConnect Rescue on a Pilots 'N Paws flight all the way from North Carolina too. He's a fluffy bundle of energy who loves nothing more than chasing balls, Iggy was a natural for the Dog Bowl! Always focused on the win, he was happily adopted out to a loving couple soon after filming. His thrilled owners make sure Iggy’s retirement from Dog Bowl fame features time chasing toys and playing with his canine brother.

Paws, Timmy is PetConnect Rescue’s other Dog Bowl 2 participant! WOOF, he s the spryest 14-year-old Pomeranian mix you’ll ever see! He came to PetConnect Rescue when his owner entered an assisted living facility. Timmy is a standout on the field with his beautiful red coat and independent streak. He’s still waiting for his forever home but, in the meantime, he's happy to be part of PetConnect Rescue's senior dog program where he spends his days frolicking in a big yard and regaling his canine friends with tales (and tails) of his adventures in New York! WOOF!

Barks, be sure to tune in on Sunday, February 3, Sunday, February 3rd, at 3:00pm ET/12:00pm PT on Animal Planet.

For 14 years, Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl has owned the world’s cutest sporting event on television! WOOF! BARKS! This year marks the second DOG BOWL as well! Every Super Bowl Sunday, Dog Bowl barkers representing rescues and shelters from across the country compete in adorable team plays that will hopefully lead to finding their "Forever Homes."

3 Different Dog Training Tips You Might Not Know

Dog
"A Great Dane Exploring the Yard"
(C) Allen Pearson Photography

You don’t need to be a professional dog trainer in order to tame your dog. There are several helpful tips and ideas on how you can train your dog and avoid their anxious behavior. It is all about communicating with your dog and learning their nature and then you can find a way to control it.

Many people suffer the terrible dog situation. But trust me the fault is not of the dog here. If you can put up to their behavior and control them you will have a perfectly calm and tamed pet, but how to do it? The answers are right below so come let’s have a look.

Understand the dog’s mind and train accordingly
It is easier to train your dog once you can understand its mind and mental state. Try to figure out the reason or the thing that might be triggering the anxious behavior.

Once you can identify that you can come up with techniques to ease it and calm it down. One great way to understand the dog is by reading its body language.

Dogs are very extroverted animals and communicative in nature. They express a lot of their behavior and emotions with their tails.

So try to understand their mood and mental state by reading their body language. If you understand them well enough it will become easier to give them feedbacks and commands.

Be the leader, not the follower
Dogs are animals that live in clans or packs. They have the instinct to either take command or follow the leader which is why initially many dogs show you challenging behaviors like avoiding your commands or not doing what you want them to do.

But if you allow them to behave that way for far too long, then they will start to assume that you do not have the leadership qualities and they can’t rely on you for survival.

To avoid that, always take command and use positive or negative responses to their acts.
"Smiles"
(C) Allen Pearson Photography

If you start to take the lead and give them feedback and don’t support their anxious behavior, they will submit to you and follow you with a calm mind with ease.

Set your dog free of restraint
When it comes to dogs, they are absolutely obedient in nature. They can be the best buddy you can possibly imagine off. But just like humans like to have space and spend good times, dogs are the same in that context.

You need to provide them with respect if you want to gain their respect. Set them free and let them have their own space. If you bind them in a confined space all day long they will start to feel like a prisoner.

So that must be avoided at all times. Let them enjoy their day and you will be able to train them better.

Conclusion
Dogs are great animals and display emotions just like you do. It is all about understood their anxiety and trying to figure out a way to calm them down. If you can achieve that, there shall be no problem whatsoever in training them. If you practice these suggestions you can see a great change in your dog's behavior and train without any hazard.

WOOF! Every once in a while, a tweet or an email comes across my desk which gets my attention! Barks, obviously, I can't share everything for everyone but Hoss got my attention! BARKS!

Cow Hoofs

Hoss had to have emergency surgery on Monday morning, January 7, 2019 to Powers Pet Emergency and Specialty Hospital, in Colorado Springs, CO. The Abdominal x-rays and ultrasound found he had two severe blockages. One was located in his stomach and the other in the small intestine. arf.

Paws, at 5 p.m., he had emergency surgery to save his life! Barks, he was in surgery for 2 1/2 hours! To remove the blockage, they had to make an 8-inch incision. arf. What was the obstruction? WOOF! A dog treat which many dogs eat every day called "cow hooves!" WOOF!

WOOF! Thankfully, the surgeon was able to remove the large and small pieces of hoof material from the abdomen and was able to "milk" the smaller pieces through the small intestines without making another incision.

Barks! Hoss made it through surgery well. The best case scenario played out for him. He went home on Tuesday night, January 8 and began his recuperation.

"Hoss with Incision"

Woofs, since the incision was large, he is on lots of medication, has a special diet, has had some exercise restrictions. Barks, which isn't easy for the humans or Hoss! I'm sure Hoss was wanting to be out running and playing!

Barks, like me, Hoss is part of a human family who loves him dearly. He is around 4-years-old and provides so much love and life to the family! An impawtant part of the family I'd say! Barks!

Hoss went to for a recent post-op visit and got a clean bill of health. He is can run and play! He is back to being his fun-loving goofy self which his humans know and love! He is enjoying life, food and his humans too! WOOF!

His human mom Brooke says "We are so happy to see him recovering well because of great medical care, prayer, faith, hope, and people like you who are helping in this time of need! We truly can't thank you enough! We appreciate you! Thank you!!"

BARK! BARK! WOOF! Hoss's family doesn't have a Pet Emergency Account so they created a GoFundMe page to help with the $4,000 surgery expense.

If you would like to assist Hoss with his surgery and related medical expenses, pawlease visit GoFundMe - Help Hoss the Chocolate Lab!

Dog

Creative: Allen Pearson

WOOF! Barks, meet my friend Nubbs from Operation Paws for Homes! She is a 3-year-old sweet, loyal, and smart young girl. She is believed to be a Retriever/Australian Shepherd Mix. As an "Aussie" she is true to her breed and is loyal, protective, and has a herding mentality. She will need an adopter who can be her "rock" and understand her quirky but loving personality!

Nubbs would love a home of her own with a backyard! She likes to shadow her human! She likes to go for car rides and loves going wherever you go!

Dog

Creative: Allen Pearson
Nubbs is crate trained and has good house manners. She comes to you when called, enjoys playing ball, and knows some basic commands! She wants to pawlease her humans.

Nubbs is picky about her dog friends but can make select dog friends over time. She hasn't shown any tendency to chase her foster's cat so it's pawssible she might coexist with a cat. She will do best with adults or older mini-humans.

Nubbs' Aussie herding trait makes her likely to be great at agility or having a job to help boost her confidence, provide exercise, and gain her respect and trust.

If you would like to learn more about dog adoption, pawlease visit the Operation Paws for Homes Dog Adoption Guide.

If you would meet or apply to adopt Nubbs, pawlease complete the Operation Paws for Homes Dog Adoption Application.

MEOW! My pawsome friend "Miss Sherry" from the Advocates for Abused and Abandoned Pets (A3P) brought by a purringly beautiful cat named Rose Mary! She is looking for a "Forever Home!"

Rose Mary is a beautiful 5-year-old Dilute Torti! She is a bit shy at first but does warm up fairly soon.
cat

Purrs, Rose Mary would like a low-key quiet home and prefers to be your one-and-only-cat-that-is! With that, she will be the happiest cat ever! Paws!

Meows, she gets along with everyone she's met when properly introduced. She prefers older mini-humans since the little mini-humans are too active for her!

Rose Mary is spayed, current on preventatives and vaccinations and is micro-chipped.

Friday's Friend! Dog Adoption, Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc.

Dog
(C) Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc.

Barks, my friend "Lab Lady" from Lab Rescue stopped by this week with several pairs of pawsomely grand Labrador Retrievers looking for their "Forever Homes!" Lab Rescue would like to find homes for all these pairs, or bonded buddies, as I like to paw!

"Lab Lady" reminded me this week that Lab Rescue is committed to keeping bonded pairs together! They need your help to honor their commitment to these pawnderful Labradors! Remember two are better than one! WOOF! from now through Thursday, February 14, Lab Rescue is offering a $200 discount per pair off the usual adoption fees thanks to two generous supporters! Please visit Lab Rescue - Pairs.

Barks, I think Angie and Maybell are two pawsome gals who, according to their foster parent, have been some of their easiest foster dogs! They have not had a single accident, rarely bark, and can be trusted not to touch anything they're not supposed to!

Maybell wiggles all parts of her body when you call her. Once she's petted, she melts to the floor for belly scratches. Angie is a bit shy. She loves to be outside and explore the yard.

These two pawsome gals are good with other dogs and with cats. They are looking for a single-family or townhome with a physical fence. They are recommended for mini-humans ages 10 and older!

WOOF! If you would like to learn more about adopting a Labrador Retriever, pawlease visit Lab Rescue's Adoption Guide! BARKS!

Friday's Friend! Cat Adoption, PetConnect Rescue

Cat

MEOWS! Purr, sometimes there are cats who are almost as handsome as me and my cousin Max. "Cat Lady" from PetConnect Rescue proved that when she brought by the most handsome fella named Walter! He is a very handsome black cat. I do not know if it's true for him, but, did you know that black cats often are overlooked at shelters and rescues? HISS! HISS! And, it's mostly because humans are afraid of "black cats!" HISS! HISS! My human thinks they are beautiful or handsome as it may be. Paws, he had a friend who had the mostest adorable black cat too. So, don't overlook such a pawsome cat just because it's a black cat!

Meet Walter! Walter is a sweet and shy kitty who wants to be loved more than anything else! He is a little timid when meeting new humans! Once he figures out he can trust a human, he turns into a love bug and will purr and rub on them. Paws, maybe even climb in their lap!

Walter will be quite content to be your one-and-only-cat-that-is or he can live happily-ever-after with fellow feline family friends!

WOOF! My friend the "Great Dane Dame" of the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League stopped by this week with a beautiful 1-1/2-year-old female Great Dane named "Kandi" for you to meet! She is looking for a "Forever Home" and humans to love! WOOF!

Kandi is a sweet, inquisitive and energetic girl. She pawsitively loves zooming around the yard and playing catch! WOOF! Barks, she enjoys chewing on bones too! She will be your bestest friend ever if you give her belly rubs and chin scratches.

Kandi loves to hang out with her humans and follow them around the house! She is good with strangers and is excited to greet them.
Dog

Kandi is great in her crate, she just needs a little incentive like peanut butter in a Kong or bacon treats and the like! Barks.

Barks, when her humans are eating, Kandi will typically sit in the family room and watch. She is a bit of a counter-surfer when she thinks the humans aren't watching! Barks, her foster mother is working on this with her!

Paws, Kandi was not trained very well in her previous home so she will have a training addendum with her adoption to ensure she develops into the most pawsome dog she can be!

Kandi enjoys going for walks with her foster. Barkingly, she doesn't do very well on a leash so her foster mom is working on this with her! Barks. She is beginning to learn not to pull!

DogKandi will only be considered for a seasoned dog owner. She is not a big barker, but will alert you to another dog walking outside!

WOOF! Kandi did great on her first trip to the Veterinarian. The Veterinarian remarked how good it was to meet a Great Dane who was not timid or anxious! Though she was interested in the other dogs, she greeted them politely.

Kandi is a sweetheart, friendly, and affectionate girl who will be a pawsome companion after proper training!

Kandi was living with an older Labrador and a cat. She may do well with cats. She is recommended for mini-humans ages 12 and older.

If you would like to learn more about adopting a Great Dane, dog adoption, or meet Kandi, pawlease visit Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League.

Bark! Do you love Great Danes, but, are not able to adopt? Please consider supporting Kandi financially. Donations will assist with her care. Any extra funds will be used to assist other Great Danes at Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League. Interested, please donate HERE!

WOOF! My friend "Miss Robyn" from PetConnect Rescue brought by a pawsome fella for you to meet. Pinto!

Pinto is a handsome 1-2-year-old Retriever mix! He's a pawsome sweetheart who loves cuddling with his humans and playing with his foster siblings! He is great with other dogs! He would love a "Forever Home" with another playful-natured dog over 20+ lbs. since he isn't a fan of the smaller dogs! Pinto does well around other dogs on walks too.

WOOF! Pinto is a very chill guy! He loves chewing bones, taking naps, and daily walks.

Pinto is crate- and house-trained. He goes in his crate willingly.

Kickstarter: Catfe Diem Cat Café & Record Shop, Centreville, VA

Cat
(C) Catfe Diem, Used by Permission

OH, MY MEOWS and PURRS! This is really cool! Have you ever heard about cat cafes? In my readings of emails, magazines, and various cat websites, I have heard of them but never visited. HISS!

Paws! I received an email this week from a human named Kristen Reynolds who is working to open a Cat Cafe in Centreville, VA. I’m pawingly excited to learn about this! I can see it now, purrs, I will go there and enjoy a cup or two of Catnip Tea or maybe the bestest in fresh spring water and the bestest in cat treats, while looking at the most beautiful artwork or going through a highly curated selection of highly curated vinyl records. Well, maybe not quite all that but I can dream, right? Paws, but why am I dreaming? Meows!
Cat

Purrs, Kristen Reynolds, a pawsome animal rescue volunteer and local artist,  has teamed up with Paws For Seniors to open a cat cafe in Centreville, VA. MEOWS! Purr, purr, purr, it will be called Catfe Diem which is planning to open in Fall 2019! Paws for Seniors, a Bealton, VA based 501(c)3 nonprofit rescue organization specializing in placing senior pets into "Forever Homes" will provide adoptable cats.

MEOWS, along with serving as a shared workspace, with furry companions to make working so much more pawsome, they are planning to have a coffee bar, a highly curated selection of vinyl records, vintage items, original artwork, as well as Catfe Diem themed merchandise! Purrs- I know I’m going to go visit when they open! Paws.

Purrs, Kristen has been volunteering with rescue organizations since 2007! She started out by volunteering to walk dogs and cleaning cages at a local shelter. In 2008, she volunteered with a more cat-focused rescue organization in Manassas, VA where she fostered kittens and cats! In April 2018, she got involved with Paws for Seniors. Paws, the idea came to her after visiting a cat cafe on a business trip. The experience created a contagious enthusiasm for the new venture!

Meow! When Kristen shared the idea with her husband, she said,

"It was kind of like an ah-ha moment when I introduced this idea to my husband.
I told him, 'We can finally open up that art gallery/record store that
we've always talked about and have the main focus be on
keeping cats out of cages and adopting homeless animals!' So, our focus is all
about the cats and it's a total perk that Andrew and I
to get a chance to incorporate our dream into the project!”

Kristen and Andrew are planning and hoping to set up shop sometime in 2019! Meows, this is where the community comes in! Paws, the couple has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help jump-start the projects operating costs. Paws, when you pledge, you will be rewarded as the campaign offers a gift program featuring mugs and other fun items. To pledge and learn more, pawlease visit,
Kickstarter: Catfe Diem, Cat Cafe and Record Shop.

Paws, this is an all or nothing project meaning they must have all funding by February 7, 2019! The goal is $25,000!

Meows, this will be so cool- I can sneak away from my crazy dog brother and get some time alone with fellow cats- Purrs!
