National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month

(C) 2022, from the Dog's Paw!
(C) 2022, from the Dog's Paw!

Woofs! Barkingly, May has been designated as the "National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month! It was designated to remind humans of the dangers of spending hours upon hours outside in the sunshine, especially mid-day, without any sunscreen protection.

Our human, Dad, loves to be outdoors this time of year. He loves doing his yard work, going for walks or hikes, and washing the car, anything to get him outside, wearing just a pair of shorts taking in all the sun rays he can! WOOFS! Now, that's a sight, er, uh, bark.

He tends to get a dark tan unless he stays outside too long at one time, especially at the beginning of the season, then he gets a sunburn. Instead of risking sunburn, he'll have Mom spray some sunscreen. He regularly uses the highest-rated sunscreen he can find, especially at the beginning of the season to protect himself.

Barkingly, not only does Dad use sunscreen to protect himself, he'll see a dermatologist regularly for a skin exam. Doing this allows a professional to notice and track any spots on the skin which could lead to skin cancer. If caught early, many skin cancers can be prevented from spreading. Also, as Mom points out, "it's better to have a third set of eyes looking for the spots since it's easy for spouses who see each other every day to possibly miss something."

Dad prefers to get his suntan naturally, not by using tanning beds. As it turns out, humans who use these devices, especially if they start at a young age, increase their risk of getting melanoma by 75%. Paws, UV radiation can lead to premature skin aging, wrinkles, loose skin, brown spots as well as skin cancer. Barks.

Barks, woofingly, skin cancer is the most common type of cancer. Paws, when treated early, it's pawssibly curable. Melanomas are less prevalent but are the most dangerous as they are likely to spread to other body areas.

Barkingly, discuss whether your doctor about limiting or avoiding exposure to sunlight. Every human is different and we can't paw about what we think is best for everyone. Pawingly, completely staying out of the sun isn't exactly healthy either. Woofs, as far as Dad goes, if he had to stay inside all the time never going outside to enjoy the sunlight, he would drive Mom, me, Noah, and Samson so crazy it may not be good - for him. WOOFS!

Bark, a topic for discussion with your dog's Veterinarian, is how sunlight and skin cancer can affect them too. Cats are less likely to get skin cancer unless they are outside a pawful lot. Paws, one of my young dog girlfriends got Melanoma.

Paws, skin cancer can affect humans of all skin tones, including darker complexions. Barks.

World Turtle Day!

Photo by Kevin C. Charpentier from Pexels
"World Turtle Day - Sea Turtle"
Photo by Kevin C. Charpentier from Pexels

WOOF! Barks! Since our human loves turtles, especially sea turtles, well actually pawbably all turtles, we couldn't let World Turtle Day go by without bringing it to your attention. Barkingly, today was designated and celebrated as "World Turtle Day" to increase awareness and ensure their protection.

A pawsome way to celebrate turtles is to visit a rescue to learn how you can volunteer to help these pawsome fellas. Arfs, there are pawlenty of opportunities from cleaning their aquariums to feeding them.

Our humans occasionally take trips to the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Topsail, NC. Here, they enjoy several hours of learning how the teams of volunteers rescue sea turtles, take care of them, nursing back to health, and finally release them back into the ocean.

Barkingly, a fun way to support sea turtles is to adopt one. Barks, no, you don't get to take the fella, or girl for that matter, home with you. This adoption uses your financial donations to support the daily care of a rescued turtle. Arfs, it's really kinda cool because you get a photo of your sea turtle, a certificate of adoption, and a bit about the turtle's history.

Paws, another way to support turtles is to make financial donations to a local turtle rescue to help with the expenses of those they rescue.

Meows! I hope you are having a meowingly grand Friday and are ready for the weekend! When my human worked in an office before retirement, he always looked forward to Friday so he could spend more time with his furry children and pawsomely grand beautiful wife!

Purrs, my friends from the Homeless Animals Rescue Team (HART) brought by a beautiful 11-year-old male Himalayan cat named Buddy who is looking for his "Forever Home!' with humans to love who will love him too!

Buddy is a grand guy who is not declawed, nor is his experience with dogs, cats, or mini-humans known. Unfortunately, he came to HART because his human passed away. Meows, while family members have taken him in, they feel he will be happier in a quiet home where he can be someone's one-and-only-pet-that-is!

Hissings, Buddy is understandably a bit confused and frightened these days because of all the sudden changes in his life. Meows, he needs a cat-savvy human who can help him adjust to a new home! Purrs.

If you have questions about Buddy, pawlease contact Kim!

Woofs! Happy Friday! My friends from Homeless Animals Rescue Team (HART) brought by a fine fellow who is looking for his "Forever Home!" with humans to love who will love him too. His name is Buzz Lightyear!
(C) 2022, from The Dog's Paw!

Buzz Lightyear is around 3-years-old, a Hound mix, and is friendly with other dogs. His experience with cats is unknown. Barkingly, he prefers older mini-human, ages 15 and older.

Barks, Buzz is the sweetest, gentlest, and quietest dog you'll ever meet. WOOFS! He loves being petted and looking up at you with his beautiful big eyes.

Buzz has the longest legs and loves using them to race around the yard like a racehorse and bounding like a deer.

Woofingly, Buzz enjoys playing with other dogs, especially wrestling and chasing, chewing on bones, and pawlaying with toys!  He has the pawsome skill of making a toy out of almost anything- including a plastic flowerpot.

Buzz is still adjusting to "civilization" and is pawsomely happy to spend quiet time alone in his crate and outdoors though he really likes being with his humans too. Woof. He is house- and crate-trained and sleeps well through the night.

Barksterly, he can be nervous and startle easily, but he is settling down quickly in his foster home. Paws, he needs a quiet environment without mini-humans and with another established, friendly, and confident dog to help him feel safe and comfortable and learn to be a dog. Woofs, and for playtime too!

Buzz walks well on a leash. Going for walks is one of his pawsitively favorite things to do. He's always interested in saying "hello" to other dogs and humans.

Paws, he knows the command "come" and is learning a few others. He is eager to pawlease his human.

Woofs, Buzz is looking for a special human who can give him a lot of lovin's so he can love them back!

Woofs! Happy Friday! My friend "Miss Sherry" from the Humane Society of Northern Virginia brought a sweet, loving, and happy senior girl named Maddie for you to meet and consider adopting.

Maddie is tipping the scales a little too much so she needs a good diet and exercise routine to help her regain her dahling-girlish figure! Recent blood work shows within the normal ranges but she does have a bit of a skin rash. A new diet and medication should clear it up fairly quickly. These are minor issues so it shouldn't prevent her from finding a special humans to love!

(C) 2022, from The Dog's Paw!

WOOFS! The impawfection in pets is often what makes them so pawfect in their human's eyes!

Barkingly, Maddie is 100% ready for adoption. She is house-trained and good with other dogs!

Maddie is looking for that special human(s) to welcome her to their home!

Happy Birthday Dad!

(C) 2022, from The Dog's Paw!
(C) 2022, from The Dog's Paw!

"WOOFS!"

"MEOWS!"

"Arfs!"

"Happy Birthday Dad! It's hard to believe that you are 413-years-old today!"

"Yeah, barks, Dad, you don't look a day over 21,535-days-old! Or pawssibly 708-months-old!"

"Meows! Oh, I think he does! He's been pushing this old thing for quite a few years now. Hee Hee Hee!"

"Woof, I'm thankful for Dad and all his born days! He may be old but he can be quite a bit of fun. I've had quite a bit of fun making him go for very long walks, long car rides with the windows down, shirts and fur off and radio pawlaying loud, helping him with his health issues, and going for hikes in the woods- just to name a few of my favorite activities, you know. And, of course, I am very thankful for the love and care he has given me. Without him adopting me, I don't know where I would be."

"Meows, that's what I love too. He's not very fond of cats but he's allowed me to live in his home, share his bed, or better yet I share my bed with him now, and we love pawlaying wand toy! I was afraid of him when I first got adopted but, thank God, he was patient with me and now we are bestest buddies."

"Arf! I'm new to the family but I have already had so much fun with him. I had so much fun teaching him to walk on gravel roads and up and down these steep hills and trying to push him to let me go exploring when I want- but he doesn't like that yet. I think he's afraid I will get hurt which means that he loves me and wants me around too."

"Happy Birthday Dad! We LOVE YOU and look forward to many more days, months, and years ahead!

"Wow! He'll really be old!"
