Operation Paws for Homes Rescue Road Trip to Help Dogs!

Dog
"Adopt ME PLEASE!"
(C) Operation Paws for Homes

WOOF! Ever wonder where your adopted dogs come from? How can humans help other dogs in need? Barkingly, a few human volunteers from Operation Paws for Homes have been pondering those exact questions and have decided to take a Rescue Road Trip!

A team of eight volunteers from Operation Paws for Homes will be taking the Rescue Road Trip  March 31- April 6! They will be heading to visit six shelter partners in North and South Carolina! The team will spend their days volunteering tackling projects where they would like help including assisting with social media, taking photographs, grooming, walking dogs, cleaning, painting, repairing facilities, and sharing what they have learned to help dogs find "Forever Homes!"
"PLEASE Adopt ME!"
(C) Operation Paws for Homes

WOOF! Beyond helping the shelters and their dogs, the team will learn more about what it takes to rescue out on the front lines! Barkingly, they hope to raise awareness about the situation of shelters in the rural south, how the dogs are living and dying there.

Barks, the team is raising funds to purchase supplies for the shelters who are often left out of government budgets! Paws, the funds will be used to purchase necessary items like flea an tick treatments, dewormers, harnesses, canned dog food, milk replacer for kittens, treats, and toys. If you would like to donate funds to help, pawlease visit Operation Paws for Homes/Donate, pawlease designate OPH Rescue Road Trip in the comments.

Paws, a Facebook page, www.facebook.com/OPHRescueRoadTrip, has been created for you to follow the stories, photos, and live video of their trip. The team will be answering the question, "Why are you getting in the Van?" from each of the participants. Though the reasons may vary, ultimately, it will be a desire to make a difference in a dog's life!

Barks, the trip was inspired by Cara Achterberg's book tour, Another Good Dog; One Family and Fifty Foster Dogs. She was shocked by what she saw! She had no idea conditions were so dire and realized it's not that human's don't care about what's happening in the shelters, they just don't know. The trip is intended to tell them! WOOF!

Barks, if you would like to donate funds to help, pawlease visit Operation Paws for Homes/Donate, pawlease designate OPH Rescue Road Trip in the comments.

Happy Spring!

Spring
(C) Allen Pearson Photography

"WOOF! ("MEOWS!") Happy Spring!! Let all the fun begin!"

"What fun Noah?"

"WOOF! In the spring, I usually do not have to wear my winter coat on walks, our walks are a bit longer and more often in a day, and the weather get's warmer. If it should snow, and we still could have a huge snow, it will melt pretty quickly and be done with it. Dad usually starts going to the garden center to buy mulch, bags and bags and bags of it, and pawlenty of flowers and planting mix- and I get to go for rides in the car!"

"Really cool Noah! I am enjoying watching more birds and those pesky-looking squirrels. I would love to get out in the yard and catch one! Paws, I'm not allowed outside.... so I will watch you guys from my perch in the cat tree!"

What you're favorite Spring activity?

Waylon is a snuggler, a kisser, and has the pawsome "Lab Lean" thing going on! WOOF! He enjoys snuggling with his foster's 11-year-old mini-human! He loves sunning on the back deck.

Waylon appears to not be too interested in a crate. He has been left uncrated in his foster's home for 5-6 hours and has done great! He wants an adopter who not be gone more than 5-6 hours a day!

Waylon loves to go for walks and meeting new humans and dogs along the way.

Dog

Footloose has not met a human or dog he does not like. He is being fostered with two cats and hasn't been interested in hurting them. He has been very eager in learning where the cats are! If he goes to a home with a cat, it would take time and training to stop this behavior.

When the Humans Are Away....

The Booth Brothers
"The Booth Brothers"
(C) The Booth Brothers

"WOOF! Paws, I can't believe they have done it to us again!"

"MEOWS! MEOW! What Noah? What's wrong? What happened?"

"WOOF! Our humans took off on another trip without taking me... with them....... I have to stay home..... guess I'm getting too old to travel with them...... woof."

"I doubt that you are too old Noah...sometimes it just doesn't work.... purrs.... just think of the possibilities.... they are endless...we can take off our fur and run around the house..... we can play the music we want instead of the long hair stuff that Dad likes so much and play like ALL THE TIME..... who listens to some guy named Beethoven or Mozart these days.... LET THE PARTY BEGIN!"

"Barks, you've got a great idea Samson....I know how to operate Dad's music system..."

"Meow, I've got the cable thing down too good buddy! We're ready to pawty! Where did they go....?"

"WOOF! Bark, they went to hear some Southern Gospel music group, the Booth Brothers! Mom loves their music! Dad says she will travel all over the world to hear them.... I think that's the group we went to hear in Shipshewana, Indiana last year!"

"Is the group with that tall skinny funny guy?"

"WOOF! Yeah! Michael Booth- I hear Mom say he's really funny!"

"Meow! I hear their music is pawsome too!!"

"Woof, I hope they have a pawsome time and are gone a long time so we can have a pawsome time pawtying!"

"Meow! Noah who do you want to order pizza from? ........ can you reach those snacks that they put on top of the refrigerator to keep us from getting them..... ????"

Daylight Savings Time Begins

Clock
(C) Allen Pearson Photography

"WOOF! WOOF! Tomorrow starts 'Daylight Saving Time!' WOOF! WOOF! BARKS! BARKS! This is so pawsome!"

"What's the big deal Noah? You get the same amount of daylight hours- just pushed to the end of the day rather than some in the morning and a few hours in the evening- I love come what may!"

"Well Samson, actually, the daylight does start getting longer. After the Winter Solstice in December, the daylight starts getting longer by a few seconds which turn into minutes. Paws, I love the time change either way because it makes walking my human in the evenings much easier!"

"Meow?"

"Bark, we'll go a walk in the morning, as usual, maybe a noon walk, followed by an evening walk because we'll have more light to see the critters and wildlife along the way. Dad likes to see the critters before I do so I don't take off chasing one and dragging him down the street with me! WOOF!"

"MEOW! If you do, grab Dad's cell phone and video the adventure- it'd look great on our social media!"

"WOOF!"

Our Sympathies to the Fairfax County Police Department

Dog
"Doby"
(C) Fairfax County Police Department

WOOF! MEOWS! Today, Samson and I mourn the loss of a pawsome, loyal and beloved K9 Officer with the Fairfax County Police Department, Fairfax, VA. According to Fairfax County Police Chief Edwin C. Roessler, Jr. on Friday, February 22, 2019.  Barkingly, he was only 2-years-old.

Paws, Roessler states, "Doby was part of a patrol canine team which responded to assist on a call for an armed robbery in the Arlington Drive area of Alexandria in the Mount Vernon District. During the incident, Doby collapsed and stopped breathing."

His handler administered canine CPR and rushed Doby to the Regional Veterinary Referral Center in Springfield, but Doby did not survive.

Police say there will be a necropsy to determine Doby’s cause of death.

Doby was born in Hungary and had been a member of the Fairfax County Police Department since March 2018 and actively working cases since August 2018.

Fairfax County Police Department holds a special place in my heart. I got out of my yard one day -you know how it is when sniffing a scent and their kind officer took me home!

Our paws, licks, and hugs to the Officers of the Fairfax County Police Department in their time of loss and mourning.
