Anniversary of the Winter Coat

I share about this every winter- woof- so I guess this season shouldn't be any different.

February 2015 marks the fifth anniversary of my fake, human-like, horse-like, totally-embarrassing, can't-believe-I-have-to-wear-this-silly-thing, winter coat.

"Noah and His Coat"
(C) Allen Pearson, All Rights Reserved
It all started the winter I went to live with my humans in Northern Virginia. It was cold.  It was snowy. Pawingly, I'd never seen snow. And, it turned out to be the snowiest winter in history for the area.  And, cold. really cold- did I mention it was cold?

Once I figured out what this stuff falling from the sky was, snow, I began to go outside with my human while he shoveled it to make a path for me.  I was so pleased he would take the time to clear out a way for me to get around. WOOF!!!

Well, I started shivering because it was so cold- at least to me being from North Carolina -it was barkingly cold. Dad and Mom noticed me shivering and took me inside.

Barkingly, it happened again.

Dad went looking for a sweater for me to use. He found several that I just was NOT going to be seen in, so I conveniently got rid of them.

Later in the season, which was in February, Dad and Mom decided to check out a new pet store in the area.  The store was having a sale on coats and sweaters so my humans looked around again.  Then, Dad found it.  What he thought was the perfect coat for me.  So, he bought it.

I have to admit, since I have a thin coat, the human made coat does keep me warm and it is really nice.  My human understands that my own coat keeps me plenty warm and only makes me wear the fake one when the temperatures get really low or we go for a walk in a snow storm.

"Stormy"
(C) Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc.
Stormy is an 11-year old, 74 lbs., male Black Labrador Retriever.  Don't let his age fool you though! WOOF!!!!

An easy going guy, who loves to play, romp and have all kinds of fun or he can just be a couch potato too!  Whichever works for you!  WOOF!

A handsome fella, he gets along with other dogs but will chase a cat when given the chance! WOOF!! (oops, sorry mom!)

He has no experience with children so he's recommended for ages 10 and older.

Stormy is good on leash and knows some commands, is housebroken and crate trained but does not really need the crate!

He is very food motivated and has a great appetite. He is a sweet boy, very lovable and just wants/needs a home.
"Don't YOU Want to TAKE ME

Stormy is looking for his new "Forever Home" as his owner's situation changed and they had to move and could not take Stormy! He had been with them since he was 2 years old! A good Samaritan took him but cannot keep him and has asked Lab Rescue for help.

Friday's Friend: Dog Adoption, Washington Humane Society

HAPPY FRIDAY!!!! WOOF!!!  What a crazy week of weather snow, then warm, then cold, then warms up, then snows.  I've had fun helping my human shoveling snow and then cuddling with him afterwards- just one of the many advantages of dog adoption.

My friend from the Washington Humane Society brought by a really sweet girl, a one-year-old, 45 lbs., American Staffordshire Terrier mix, named Smoke, who is looking for a "Forever Home!"

"Smoke"
(C) Washington Humane Society
A fun, goofy, energetic and very sweet girl, Smoke is friendly with other dogs, and loves taking long strolls throughout the day.

A cute thing about her is she can't control her ears enough to decide how she wants them so she keeps one up and one down at all times- giving her that sweet, cute, curious look!  WOOF!!! BARK!!

Smoke's favorite hobby is playing with her stuffed toys and then cuddling with them in her bed afterwards!

Interested in meeting this sweet girl and learning about dog adoption?  You can meet Smoke at the Washington Humane Society's Georgia Avenue Adoption Center at 7319 Georgia Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C., 202-723-5730 or visit Washington Humane Society.

Noah's Houndisms: Spaying and Neutering!

arf! This is embarrassing.  And, not a topic I like to talk about.  woof.  All I can think about is OUCH! and, well, a little less fun in my doggy life.  Of course, that might be a good thing-

Why? There are way too many cats and dogs without humans to love them and a home for them to live.  They end up in shelters waiting for a human to come by and take them home.  If that doesn't happen, and if a rescue doesn't come by and take them until they find a home, then they, well, you know- it's not a good thing- sorry, I can barely say it much less write it because I was really close to being there once myself.  An estimated 2 million animals are put down each year as they can't find a home.

Used by permission, GraphicStock
Spay/neuter is an effective and humane way to save animals’ lives. Spaying (for females) and neutering (for males) are common surgeries veterinarians perform to stop animals from having accidental, surplus litters.

The treatment can be done as early as 6 weeks old.  Visit your veterinarian for more details.

WOOF!! Happy Friday- be sure to keep warm today- going to be really cold all day.

"Lab Lady" brought by two friends for you to meet this week.  I've got a great privilege of introducing to you two great Labradors, Zany and Ally!

"Zany and Ally"
(C) Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc.
These two characters are a bonded pair who have been together since Zany was a pup so they must be adopted together.  They have lived in the suburbs with limited city noises and traffic. Adoptions are limited to single family suburban or rural homes.

"Zany"
(C) Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc.
Ally and Zany adapt to their changing situations really well, both before going to the fosters house and while there.  These two ladies are very well behaved, well trained and have excellent manners.  They don't climb on the furniture without an invitation from the human and don't need a crate as they do well without one.

Zany and Ally love to investigate and play- Zany loves to play fetch and tug-o-war. They both walk very nicely, without pulling.

The girls are two love bugs who will give you more love than you can imagine! They love to be petted and like to be in the same room with you, but are not clingy. They are looking for a family with a little love to give and a lot of love to get!

These girls are good with children ages 8 and up.  No cat history.

Zany is a 8 year old, 81 lbs., spayed female, Black Labrador Retriever. She is up to date on vaccines.

Ally - 15 year old, 63 lbs., spayed female Chocolate Labrador Retriever, up to date on vaccines.

If you would like to meet these two sweet and wonderful ladies and learn about dog adoption, please visit Lab Rescue.

WRRRRRROOOOOFFFFFF!!!! (that means I'm cold!) but Happy Friday!!  Be careful as you go out today in the Washington D.C. area, it's really cold.  Too cold.  This is a great day for reading my blog and learning about dogs and cats waiting to be adopted.

"Kena"
(C) Washington Humane Society
This week, from Washington Humane Society, I've got a friend named Kena I'd like you to meet.

Kena is a medium-energy sweetheart who is ready to find a lap to call her own!

At first, she is a little timid or shy to meet humans, but just give her a moment, and you'll have an express ticket to cuddle station.

Kena is 3 years old, 38 lbs., American Staffordshire/Border Collie mix, and she is a mature lady, so you don't have to worry too much about the bounciness of youth.

She is a happy member of the Washington Humane Society's PACK (People and Animals Cardio Klub) program and enjoys going on runs. Also, she is happy to just hang out by your side after a good walk!

Interested in meeting Kena and learning about dog adoption?  You can meet her at the Washington Humane Society's New York Avenue Adoption Center at 1201 New York Avenue, NE, Washington, D.C., 202-576-6664 or visit Washington Humane Society.

Love Your Pet Day

WOOF!! This should be a fun post today- pawticularly once my human reads it-  HAPPY LOVE YOUR PET DAY!!!  WOOF!!!

Tomorrow, February 20, is "Love Your Pet Day!"

You should take time every day to love your pet.  Whether it's taking time before and after school or work, you must do this to ensure the happiness of your pet!!

After all, they've done many things to make your life great! We help you maintain better health which includes lower blood pressure and stress relief, and we love you unconditionally!

Barkingly pawsome, is the pet who has loved you through thick and thin- I paw that you celebrate this day by:

  • Taking the day off and spending it petting your pet.  If your pet is not pettable then take the time to pet your friends pet after watching your pet or whatever it is you do with a pet that is not pettable- maybe keep it company for a few more hours than usual.
  • Give us an extra treat of the best treats you have for us.  At least two. Maybe three.  My human tries to watch my weight but it won't hurt a few extra treats once, especially on "Love Your Pet Day!"
  • Give us an extra hug. This one, you have to be careful and be sure your pet likes this- if they show an unhappiness like trying to pull away, stop or don't do it.  I don't mind a hug for a few seconds but not an eternity!  WOOF!
  • However you celebrate the day, be sure to spoil your pet in a way they would greatly appreciate and love!
WOOF!!!!

Noah's Houndisms: February is "Pet Dental Month!"

Used by Permission, GraphicStock
WOOF!!  Dental cleaning.  Dental check-up.  Maybe dental surgery.  All important aspects of caring for your dog or cat.

My human gets laughed at by other humans when he mentions taking me to the veterinarian for dental cleaning.  He doesn't mind as he realizes not everyone is up to date on dental care for their pets and why it's important.

Several years ago now, Mom and Dad had adopted a wonderful cat.  It was Dad's first time to live with a cat so he was a bit unnerved but the cat ended up winning him over!

The previous owner did not do a good job caring for the cats teeth.  And, his diet wasn't the best either.  Mom and Dad changed his diet and they kept up his veterinarian appointments.

In time, the cat began to become grumpy and not fun to be around.  Concerned, my humans took him to the veterinarian only to discover some serious dental issues.

After some dental surgery, and some time passed, Mom and Dad noticed a 100% turnaround in the cats behavior and attitude. You could say he developed a great cattitude!!

From that point on, my humans have maintained dental appointments in February for all their furry children. WOOF!!!

Happy President's Day!

Leave it to human's to make a confusion out of everything!  WOOF!!

What began as a celebration of two Presidents, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, with holidays separately to recognize both, was changed in the early 1970's to celebrate the achievements of all the President's of the United States of America.

My humans were surprised to learn this as they'd always celebrated it as Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays- especially since Lincoln was one of Dad's favorite Presidents.

Enjoy your day off- if you are not off today- enjoy the easier commute to work.

Am curious, who is your favorite U.S. President and why?

Friday's Friend: Dog Adoption, Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc.

HAPPY FRIDAY!  And, am hoping you have a barkingly pawsome Valentine's Day- !

I'd like you to meet my friend Moselle.  He is with the Lab Rescue and was introduced to me by Lab Lady.

"Moselle"
(C) Lab Rescue of L.R.C.P., Inc.
Moselle is a 10 year-old Black Labrador Retriever looking for his Forever Home!

He is crate trained and house trained and human trained (oops- my comment- excuse me! arf!).  He is the perfect house guest with his foster.

A smart dog, as he has learned how to walk on the carpet, instead of the hardwood floors, in his foster's home after she taught him to do it.

He loves to go for walks- his bum leg doesn't really slow him down. He likes to sleep on the dog bed next to his foster at night and wake his humans with a wet nose!

Moselle really is a sweet guy. He isn't the kind of dog that has a long list of needs or must-haves. There are a few though, like he must have a comfy-cozy bed and a human that will shower him with love and praise!  Who wouldn't want that!  WOOF!!!!!!!

He can easily live with dog(s) or not, and he can also live with a cat. You can see some videos of this cutie on YouTube here: Moselle and Moselle 2. He is approved for children ages 10 and up.

Moselle is a dream to walk on the leash. He will pull to follow an interesting scent along the way, but loves to go for a jaunt around the block. He looks very proud when he is walking.

Moselle has been through his fair share of woes in his life and is very deserving of a super comfy dog bed and a patient human to love him and he can love on in return!!  WOOF!!! He needs a place of his own - a place to call home. Forever home.

He is current on his vaccines and looking for someone special to enjoy life with. Is that you?

If you would like to meet Moselle and learn about dog adoption, please visit, Lab Rescue.

Friday's Friend: Cat Adoption, PetConnect Rescue

Now this is one good looking cat!! WOOF!! er, Meow?!?  I caught up with Cat Lady this week and she was enjoying this young  lady's company.  Her looks got my attention, so I had to have you meet her-  Cinnamon!!

"Cinnamon"
(C) PetConnect Rescue
Along with her good looks comes a personality to match! Born in the spring of 2014 this sweet girl found herself in a shelter with her sister Snickers.

And, she knows how to get your attention to give her attention- WOOF!! - she has a really cool chirp sound she makes!  Barkingly pawsome!

She is a gentle girl and happiest when getting a good tickle behind her ears!

Cinnamon would do best in an adult household or one with older cat savvy children.

Cinnamon is loving her foster home and the chance to play or find a patch of sunlight in which to take a snooze but is interested in finding a home and humans to call her own! Could that be yours?

Cinnamon is healthy, up-to-date on vaccinations, spayed and has ladylike litter box manners.

If you would like to meet Cinnamon, or learn about cat adoption, please complete the PetConnect Rescue Online Application and an adoption coordinator will contact you.

Friday's Friend: Dog Adoption, PetConnect Rescue

WOOF!!! Bark!! This young lady that I met at PetConnect Rescue with Miss Cathy is a beautiful 9-month old, 47 lbs., Ridgeback/Retriever mix!  Meet Roxanne -

"Roxanne"
(C) PetConnect Rescue
The look on this girls face says "I'm a sweetheart of a dog! Please adopt me and I'll love you FOREVER!!"

Roxanne does well with other dogs, has passed her cat test and enjoys attention from humans.
She loves to romp and play, but knows when it is time to settle down and relax.  Currently, she is enjoying "farm life" with her foster family, but could easily adapt to family life with a fenced yard for her to romp and play.

This girl isn't just another wonderful, sweet, and pretty dog face- she is smart too!  She already knows "sit," "down," and "stay" with hand signals.  She loves her treats and is eager to please...a great combination for training!

Roxanne is spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and preventatives and eager to find a family to love!

Interested in meeting Roxanne and learning about dog adoption, please visit PetConnect Rescue!  WOOF!!!!!!
