Friday's Friend! Dog Adoption, Operation Paws for Homes

WOOF!! Sometimes technology just isn't what it should be, how you want it, and when you need it. Last Friday, my humans and I went to a graduation party in North Carolina. I was planning to spend a few hours before the party writing "Friday's Friend" and sharing my about my friends who need "Forever Homes" but could not get online.  So, this week I'm sharing a few friends who need humans to love.

My friend "Miss Lisa" from Operation Paws for Homes brought by two friends for you to meet.  This is Jelly Belly!

"Jelly Bean"
(C) Operation Paws for Homes

Jelly Bean is one fun and sweet character.  He is a 3-year-old, Pug Terrier mix who enjoys being with his humans.

"Jelly Bean"
(C) Operation Paws for Homes
He has done very well with other dogs in his foster home.  He's crated trained and learning to be house trained.  He is making pawcellent progress with only a few accidents!

He enjoys going on walks and does very well on a leash. He is content snuggling up for awhile too.

Jelly Bean is working on improving his manners too. He's a quick learner and loves getting attention from his humans.

A note from Operation Paws for Homes: Jelly Bean tested positive for heartworm disease before arriving to the rescue. Heartworm disease is transmitted to a dog through a bite from an infected mosquito producing a positive test in six months. Operation Paws for Homes will treat the dog and provide two weeks’ recovery time prior to adoption. Potential adopters will receive detailed information on the disease and their role in completing the recovery process from the Operation Paws for Homes Heartworm Coordinator. With monthly preventatives, the disease is completely preventable. Read about heartworm disease here: Heartworm Society, Pet Owner Resources, Heartworm Basics

Meet Schnapps!

"Schnapps!"
(C) Operation Paws for Homes

This incredibly adorable pups was born around April 22, 2017.Though she seems to have a calm personality, her playful side does come out too!  She is looking for a human who will not leave her home alone for more than four hours at a time!  The human needs to understand puppies need constant attention as they love to get into and chew on everything. WOOF!!

She is not potty trained but is working to get there!

Since Schnapps is so young, she has only had 2 sets of the required 3 sets puppy vaccinations. Barkingly, this is most important to note as it means her immune system will not be fully functioning until about 6 weeks of age! WOOF!

Barkingly, she MUST stay out of public spaces where she could be exposed to the germs of other dogs for another 8-10 weeks after going home.  BARK! These NO PUPPY ZONES include all pet stores, dog parks and for apartment dwellers, all areas used by other dogs.  These requirements are strictly for the puppy’s medical safety and longevity.

Barks, if you would like to apply to adopt Schnapps, please contact Operation Paws for Homes, or email: adopt@ophrescue.org.

To learn about upcoming adoption events, please visit Operation Paws for Homes - Events.  No guarantee these two dogs will be at these events.

The Prince William Humane Society is looking for volunteers to assist with kennel/pet care throughout the week including weekends with shifts in the early morning, afternoon, and evening:
  • Canine care involves feeding/watering, kennel and dog room cleaning, walking, socialization, and assisting with laundry (for kennel bedding), reinforcing basic obedience, dispensing medicine, if needed, along with a few other things. And, of course, these adorable pups need lots of affection and attention.
  • Feline care involves feeding/watering, litter box cleaning, socialization, cleaning of community cat room/cages, and dispensing medicine, if needed. These furry friends need plenty of affection and attention, too!
All volunteers will receive necessary pet care training and there are processes and procedures in place to ensure everyone knows exactly what’s needed and how to do it.

Happy First Day of Summer!

HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SUMMER!

My human looks so forward to the "First Day of Summer" - it's funny.  He will probably have a "Summer Solstice" party on the back deck or the front porch staying outside until all light from the sun has diminished in the West.  He will have his book, a bottle of Snapple Green Tea and these things which will keep some bugs away. Barkingly, I will be right there with him enjoying the time. Big party guy, huh?!

With the warm weather here to stay for a few months, we will travel and go and go some more until we gone as much as we can go or the first snowstorm hits in the winter!  WOOF!! Dad doesn't travel far in the winter months or at least he will pay close attention to the weather forecast.

As we travel this summer, Dad will make preparations to take me wherever he goes wherever he can, and however he can. He loves having me travel with him and says it's so much easier, even though a bit more work, than leaving me at home. He prepares for the heat which can be dangerous for me and he uses BringFido to make any hotel reservations we need. This way, he knows the hotel will accept large dogs like me!
I know we are planning to go railfanning, sea turtle watching, to the beach, to the mountains and a few other places that get our attention along the way.

Whatever you do this summer, have a blast, make the pawsome memories with family which will last forever!  Be careful! Be safe!

Barks and Paws!  Happy Summer!

Happy Father's Day!

"Noah"
(C) Allen Pearson, All Rights Reserved
I don't remember much about my dog father. I know he was a really cool guy and did his best to raise me well. He gave me life along with my pawsome mom so I bark a huge "Thank You" to Dad.

My human Dad and I have been together for 8 years.  He adopted me at age 2.  We have had a pawsome journey barking together over the years.  I love taking him for really long walks making him as tired as possible then resting just a few minutes at home and rushing out the back door to play fetch and run the yard- he looks at me and says "I can't keep up with that!" I love the trips we take exploring the human universe and especially when we go railfanning! Those trains are pawsome too! Sometimes we get in the car, take our fur off and go for an "R" yes Dad, I know what it means and blast the radio. Dad makes sure that I have the bestest of food and treats and the cleanest of waters.  He takes me to the Veterinarian regularly- though if it weren't for the pretty Vet Techs, I'd get mad at him and bark really loud. He says I am really good for him and I know he is for me-  WOOF!!

Happy Father's Day to all the fathers in the universe.  Whether you are human or pawsome animal, whether you are the natural father or a stepfather or adopting father or whatever role of father you may be- there are many ways of being a father so I don't want to leave anyone out- may you have a pawsomely blessed day with those you love and love you too!

How To Treat Canine Arthritis And Other Health Issues With Turmeric

Dog owners know too well how canine arthritis can cause disabilities in their favorite pets. It is indeed disheartening to see your friend which was once energetic, lively and a happy dog succumb to a life on a scrunched up doggy bed. It is also quite costly for dog owners to take their pets to the vet all the time to get the necessary treatments they need.

There is a natural treatment for canine arthritis and it is the use of turmeric curcumin. Turmeric is a spice commonly known as a cooking ingredient but it also has healing properties that do not just work on us humans, but on dogs too. It is also an effective remedy for skin problems that most outdoorsy dogs usually suffer from.

Below are the health benefits your pets can enjoy when you supplement them with turmeric.

Treats Canine Arthritis
The effects of turmeric curcumin on human arthritis are known all too well. Believe it or not, its functions are the same when administered to your pets. The effects of curcumin - the potent compound responsible for its effectivity, comes from anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic natural compounds. That alone helps the swelling and the discomfort they feel on their joints.

Additionally, curcumin helps protect chondrocytes (cells responsible for bone development) from damage by supporting osteoblasts (cells responsible for bone healing and bone formation) on the problem area. Therefore, turmeric directly protects the overall bone health of your dogs.

Supports Heart Health

For older canines, one major health concern is their heart condition. As older dogs are more susceptible to blood clots and excess cholesterol, it is also important to help them prevent these health issues. Turmeric has been known to lower down cholesterol levels in mammals. When their cholesterol is controlled and maintained, it can take some workload off from the liver. This ultimately prevents your dog from getting a stroke or heart attack.

Prevents Cancer
One of the most dreadful diseases your dog could suffer from is cancer. Just like humans, they experience a lot of discomfort, pain and are forced to adapt with lifestyle changes that they may never understand. The turmeric cancer benefits come from another biocompound called ar-turmerone. Proven to be effective in treating lymphoma at its early stages, it can inhibit the activity of proteins essential for cancer cell survival. This makes it a good natural remedy in preventing cancer cells from multiplying.

Other Uses of Turmeric
In addition to the three main health benefits of turmeric curcumin to dogs listed above, below are also some other notable benefits:

  • reduces gas pain and bloating
  • treats skin allergies
  • supports weight loss for obese dogs
  • helps with epileptic episodes
  • prevents formation of cataracts
  • improves gut health

How Do You Give Turmeric To Dogs?
Different dogs prefer different forms of turmeric. While some of them might be fine with licking turmeric powder off of a spoon, other can only take it when incorporated in their food. As a dog master, you may have to do some trial and error with your pets. You can probably mix them in gravy, dog treats, or milk.

You can also opt for turmeric supplements in capsule form. These are more potent as curcumin has already been extracted from the plant itself. There are many trusted pet supplement suppliers and you can buy from them. You can also find these products at online stores. Just make sure you buy from a reputable company to guarantee that quality standards are met. Get the 95% curcumin and don’t go beyond that dosage.

The question now is, how much turmeric to give your pooch? The amount of turmeric you can give your dogs is portioned to how much they weigh. If your dog weighs 1 lbs to 20 lbs, you can give them half or a whole capsule. If they weigh 20 lbs to 100 lbs, you can offer them 1 to 2 capsules per day. One tip to remember is that it is always better to start with a smaller dosage regardless of your dog's weight to prevent an upset stomach.
