National Adopt A Shelter Dog Month- A Visit with Kayo

It was a beautiful day and I had adopting a dog on my mind. Lucky was doing wonderfully and I felt we were both ready for another companion. While leaving lunch with a friend I stumbled upon a pet store with an adoption sign out front. I went in to find dogs running everywhere, from one corner of the store to another. All of the dogs had been rescued from the local city shelter.

Suddenly, a little ball of fuzz caught my eye. She was walking over to the water bowl, which was about four times her size. When she got there she looked into the bowl, watched the ripples and stuck one paw in. She sharply pulled it out, then tried again as if expecting a different result. She left one paw in the water, then put the other paw in. She looked around, maybe wondering if someone was watching or maybe wondering if anyone would join her. After a few seconds, she flicked her paws back and forth in the water like crazy, splashing water all over herself, all over the walls and the ground. It didn’t matter who was watching or what any of the other dogs were doing—she was having the time of her life.

It was at this moment that I knew this was the dog for me. Mischievous, adventurous and caring less about what the world thought of her: what a perfect match! I came back two days later and adopted Kayo. My life is forever changed because of her and I’ve become a better person because of her. I was right that day when I decided to adopt her. It’s one decision I will never regret for the rest of my life.
